The identification and counting of railroad cars was a huge thing at the time. There's a brief mention of GE's method in the Wikipedia article for KarTrak, the technology that eventually "won", until people realized it was a pain in the ass to keep maintained.

KarTrak was pretty neat though. It was the most advanced barcode system for many, many years. I suppose if it hadn't been adopted though, Bob Chandler would be famous for developing the system that would be used into the late 70's at least.
