As an aside, I wouldn't expect to like a fifth crewmember being added after over 20 real life years, but Le Majeur is pretty likeable. Maybe it's just the parallels to Rock's own entry to Roanapur, but I found myself rooting for her more than i expected.

I really do like her personality, plus fact she preffers wearing a suit is kinda cool.
 
Well, that chapter would have been an interesting setup if I had any faith in Black Lagoon not going on hiatus again almost immediately.

I get where Rei Hiroe is going, with the world moving into a new era, Roanapur calming down, and the various triads and mafias getting more and more of their profits from legitimate business ventures.

The problem is that this kind of story payoff would require recent emotional connection to the story, when two and a half arcs have been completed in nearly two decades. So it just ends up feeling disconnected, and more like a tonal shift than natural development of the world. The art feels a little cleaner, but not in a good way, too.

I feel like the developments into Rock's character, and Revy turning into a somewhat nicer person, would have been a payoff of the two rubbing off on each other. It's an interesting angle Rock has taken, but like every thing else related to it, it's all "would have, could have". Just potential that would have been better had I not had fifteen plus years away from the setting, and a setup chapter to an arc I don't trust to be finished for another 5-10 years at best.

I'm just not as invested in these characters anymore. I'm going to give following chapters a try, and I dearly wish to be proven wrong, or that the action at least makes up for it.
 
Rewatched the series again. It's aged a bit. Nah, I've aged a bit: the firefights were boring as fuck because no one somewhat important ever got so much as a scratch when against entire crowds of gunmen. Still the best dub ever and one of the best settings I've seen in an anime. Just not as good as I remember it.

It's like an 80s Hollywood action flick. Nevermind Roberta and her Blood Trail OVA where she is for all intents and purposes the Terminator. I want to imagine that with the upcoming story, they face some actual 'consequences' instead of Rock learning a lesson.

I mean, technically you can. Fuck me, they recently made another City Hunter OVA and that shit even more 80;s level cheese than Black Lagoon.
 
Nah, it still could. Older shows are getting remakes and continuations. Maybe with the success of Frieren, Madhouse could revisit their "golden era" of anime and produce another season. Granted, that all depends on whether Rei puts out enough chapters for that to be an option. Right now there isn't enough content and the story hasn't progressed much. Hopefully the latest arc doesn't drag on for 4 years.

Behind all her badassness, all her bluster, all her her cursing and killing - Revy hates herself. She hates the hand she was dealt in life, hates her lifestyle, hates that the only thing she has to offer the world is the ability to hurt and kill people, and at that moment hates that someone is judging her for it. It's a short yet fascinating peek behind the curtain of a character, and how they interact with someone that's trying to reach them.

100% agree. These characters in this series feel actually grounded and "realistic." My suspension of disbelief is not once lifted when watching the show, reading the manga (the earlier chapters up until after "Roberta's Blood Trail), or watching analysis videos of the series.

Do you guys really think Dutch served in Veitnam? Let's say he lied about his age to get in. Let's also say he enlisted in '69, the height of the Vietnam war. Now let's say, Dutch was at least 17 when he enlists. Black Lagoon starts in '95. Now let's speculate, Dutch came to Roanapur in '90. Or, he want AWOL toward the end of the Vietnam war. He would be around 43 at the start of the show. In his biography in his Wikipedia page, it explicitly states that he appears to be in his early to mid-thirties. So what the fuck? Does Dutch just have a skincare routine? Or did he really lie about his service as a cover story?
