Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

When did “AI” stand for “we vastly over hired because we thought free money would last forever and we are utter retards”?
AI - "technological disruption we couldn't see coming and now we're deftly responding to it"
Overhiring - "Retards made their way into upper management and the C-suite and are probably still here so you should start grilling them about their mental handicaps"

It's obvious why they pick the former.

*technological disruption we couldn't see coming but at least in theory could reduce the costs of our system regardless of how good our staff are

How the fuck do you look at a nation like the USA that has practically worshipped the V8 ever since its invention and go "Yes, we are going to make mass market electric cars for them". You might as well open up a vodka distillery in the Middle East, or try to set up an AA chapter in Russia.
Lol exactly. You can sell EVs but they'll never be more than 10-15% of new car sales unless you literally double or triple taxes on ICE vehicles.

Trying to make EVERYTHING an EV in the USA is retarded.

Even CHINA is ending heir EV/NEV subsidies in the next 6 months as their car market is a bloodbath
Rumor on the grapevine is that these layoffs are disproportionately affecting H1Bs. It appears a lot of companies are worried about the admin clamping down even harder and are trying to trim their foreign-labor fat.

Anecdotally, I can say that one of the other white people being laid off this month at my current job immediately found something whereas most of the Indians are being ghosted.
Lol I'm optimistic but not too optimistic.

Also good on your white bro for getting that JOB
These LinkedIn MBA posters are a cancer.
That's all of LinkedIn lol.

GM's retarded over investment in EVs reached back to the Biden admin and it's stated goal of essentially making it impossible to buy a new combustion powered vehicle by 2035 and California's states goal of killing off combustion powered vehicles in the state by the same year.

Meanwhile Toyota is happily making millions of hybrids a year that are 10-40% more efficient than the competition while GM STUPIDLY decided "naahhh just EVs, who cares than an Equinox is 10-12 mpg worse on average than a RAV4 while being less powerful and nearly as expensive 😑"

I will say the GM battery tech is at par or even a bit better than par globally so they have that but damn ..... Just so stupid.

October Layoffs Were the Worst in 22 Years and Hit Tech Workers Hard

A lot of people can feel that the economy isn’t doing so hot right now. Unfortunately, due to the government shutdown, we don’t have much in the way of official economic data to give statistical clarity to that feeling. However, more and more, private firms are releasing their economic analysis, and, much of the time, it doesn’t bode well for the American worker.

Now, a new report shows that this October was a particularly brutal month for the U.S. workforce—and it was especially bad for the tech industry. The analysis, from career transition services firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, shows that this past month was the worst in decades. The report states that U.S. employers announced some “153,074 job cuts in October, up 175% from the 55,597 cuts announced in October 2024. It is up 183% from the 54,064 job cuts announced one month prior.”

Yikes, that’s a lot. And the cuts have been especially deep for Silicon Valley:

Technology continues to lead in private-sector job cuts as companies restructure amid AI integration, slower demand, and efficiency pressures. In October, the sector announced 33,281 job cuts, up sharply from 5,639 in September. For the year, Technology firms have announced 141,159 job cuts, up 17% from the 120,470 announced through the same period in 2024.
Yeah, that’s bad. That is not good at all. There’s no real way to spin that as good. “This is the highest total for October in over 20 years, and the highest total for a single month in the fourth quarter since 2008,” the report states. “Like in 2003, a disruptive technology is changing the landscape.”
“October’s pace of job cutting was much higher than average for the month. Some industries are correcting after the hiring boom of the pandemic, but this comes as AI adoption, softening consumer and corporate spending, and rising costs drive belt-tightening and hiring freezes,” said Andy Challenger, workplace expert and chief revenue officer for Challenger, Gray & Christmas. “Those laid off now are finding it harder to quickly secure new roles, which could further loosen the labor market.”

We’ve already written about the huge layoffs that impacted the tech industry last month—including some 14,000 people who used to be (but are no longer) employed with Amazon. The exact reason for why tech companies are shedding jobs right now is still up in the air. One narrative attributes the layoffs to the rise of AI, but other commentators have noted that it could be much more mundane economic/business factors that are squeezing the industry like a lack of growth in non-AI sectors and tariff policy eating away at profits while making it difficult to plan for the future.

learn-to-code bros...our lambos are fading away

TL;DR:
THE BOTTOM LINE
If your job is "input, process, output" you're at risk (regardless of talent or experience).

But if you frame problems, make decisions, manage budgets, or build AI systems, you're becoming more valuable.
This. If all you are is an average code monkey, your days are already numbered. If you are involved in architectural decisions that shape the business, then you are in demand.

EDIT:

Not sure how true this is, but it's true that interview processes are fucked.

This has been the case for quite a while and predates the LLM craze. Making a career out of slapping together brochureware to spec or doing Salesforce integrations was always precarious. Pajeet has always been there ready to do the needful at a fraction of the price.

Well, thankfully, it appears a lot of these are H1B related *screams in SAAR* This is because the H1B changes came in October 1st, and remember, a lot of these media outlets want to fear monger because we oh so need our shit smelling serf class.

I personally think a lot of this comes from the non-existent ROI from AI. A lot of the companies, especially Amazon and Intel, poured untold billions and need to recoup. I am expecting Microsoft's lay-offs in January to be brutal, with Co-Pilot failing and Office package subscriptions decreasing due to Co-Pilot. Remember, they are pouring money into OpenAI and getting nothing from that either.

Another Intel, 669 in Oregon:

Intel, one of the world’s biggest semiconductor companies, will be laying off another 669 employees from its facilities in Hillsboro and Aloha.

The cuts are expected to happen before the end of the year.

It comes after the tech giant already cut around 2,500 positions over the summer.

In August, the company announced it would be suspending its stock dividend starting in the fourth quarter.

The moves are aimed at cutting costs, as Intel looks to compete with competitors like Nvidia and AMD.

I read the WARN act notice, and this may be the funniest job title ever for the guy who fires people.

I’m calling bullshit. “Sexual conduct policy” doesn’t sound like a term any corporation would say out loud and would dress up a bit (like the “don’t have a secret affair with your secretary and don’t have hookups with your subordinates“ would usually be called a “fraternisation policy”).

Maybe it was a typo and it is meant to be “sexual misconduct”, but it seems to much of an important email, one that could be read back to you in a court room, not to have been proof read and that spotted.

I’d say there was no job and this is just to get donations and OnlyFans subscriptions.

Hm you could be on to something.
