Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

I have a feeling a lot of this ‘AI is replacing jobs’ talk is just cope to keep shareholders optimistic. I think these tech companies are cutting jobs without any actual intention to replace them with AI: a lot of jobs getting cut simply were not productive at all.
The market is crashing and you're right this is a way to soften the impact.

I am honestly surprised more companies don't do this, I have read/heard one too many times about positions like "product owner", "product manager", etc do nothing but scream at programmers "
Product owner when its owning a revenue generating product is hard and pays well. Making people product owners of nothing has long been a way to remove people you can't fire easily (sheboons) from touching anything important.

The most obvious happening is that they are trying to offshore development to a third world country like India for cheap labor. A.I. standing for actually Indian is a joke for a reason, many of these companies are hooked on cheap labor and just using A.I. to obfuscate that.
I can confirm that at least one company I worked for did this. Two rounds of layoffs in a year (2023). Iwwas let go despite not even being there for a year and rotating through three managers over the first nine months because executives know what they're doing (cough).

When being let go, my manager said something like, "Your position is no longer needed." Keep in mind this manager was German and lived in Germany (I'm in the US) and which knows if he was pushing for more European jobs or just relaying info.

In either case, looking at the company's job board a little while later shows a lot of tech roles, but zero in the US. The only US-based roles were in sales or some shit. Because US-based companies unwilling to support the US workforce should totally be able to keep selling in such a rich marketplace.

Otherwise, I keep getting emails from companies i applied to before, but ne"er got so much as an initial phone screen, asking if I want to "keep in touch with all that's happening at ACME Company." No, bitch, I want a job or not to be bothered by you.

So, with a recent one, i scoured their job listings and, wouldn't you know it? All the tech roles are targeting workers in Pune, India.

Naturally, I replied to the sender (and, some HR email addresses) letting them know that my schedule is open and whenever they want to schedule time to suck my dick, I'll put it on the calendar.

Still waiting for a reply. Fingers crossed!

The next happening is them getting rid of useless talent. Many of these companies over hired during Covid and need to thin out now.
I wouldn't say over hired insomuch as "free" money suddenly became unavailable due to US fiscal policy changes and cuts needed to be made. Thus, mandatory RTO as a means to coerce voluntary employee separation became a thing.

(Remember when companies were crowing about embracing remote work? Keep that in mind the next time your boss or CEO is talking and always keep an eye on the job market. )

Now, whether that is still the case two years after the fact is up for debate, so you may be correct that we're seeing some excess fat get trimmed.

Relevant to tech layoffs, Trump is kneecapping H1b starting next year

FUCKING FINALLY. Note it's only for the initial filing but it makes H1bs 60x more expensive initially and the Trump admin is looking at finally raising the h1b wage floor (currently $60k a year, unchanged since fucking 1990)

Of course India is screaming and coping and seething (fucking LOL)

Have fun with your extra $100k costs tech corps (it should be more IMHO)

driving up the initial cost is a good start but it really needs to be annual and higher than $100k. if its really a critical expert position that cant be fulfilled by local applicants then the employer is probably making at least 10x that off their work,

also raising the wage floor wont be as helpful as you might think because tech corpos hire pajeets not just because they accept any wage offered but also because they often have massively long resumes full of seemingly impressive credentials which are either 1. not telling the whole story (pajeets in executive positions running companies to the ground and presenting it as "high level experience"), or 2. completely made the fuck up, often ai generated.

this ensures silicon valley retards would rather hire jeets over legit american applicants with real work experience and even offer them a higher salary because digging into a lying smelly pajeets track record to verify it isnt literal bullshit is a HECKIN RACISM, and also practically impossible if theyve only "worked" in pajeet companies in pajeetistan.

the Wage floor is a big factor as is H1bs being literal indentured servants.

Increase the wage floor and drop the total allowed H1b, OPT and similar visas down and you'll hear a giant flushing sound in SV and the USA as a whole.

Also, TAX REMITTANCES bigly.

Fwiw it's becoming common knowledge that most resumes coming form India are totally bullshit and lies upon lies. FINALLY.

Amusing thing is that this has been going on since the 90s, but at that time you had to be a true autist to program a computer. Sure, Java has been out since the mid-90s, and Python since the early 90s, but Sun had to spend a half-billion dollars to shove Java everywhere, and Python didn't pick up for decades. Google or somebody else probably shilled it, I don't remember, I didn't hear anything about Python until its 2 to 3 fiasco and thought, "somebody's using this retard language? Didn't Larry Wall already solve the glue problem with Perl?" However, now that most of the extremely technical problems have been solved, and the edges of the most popular languages and frameworks are rounder than an ideal cow, the average business "problem" is in reach of Hindu hands.

But, we must have hope that we will fix this problem.

I hope they give EA the Westwood treatment.
the optomstic bad news is might need to download all your old stuff now.
....
it could of been worst but like most said they were coasting & lost madden licence due not inovating sports games.
saudie will take axe to most things & live off ips rights & fire most of worker with jared kushner making bank.

Is this it? Is EA finally dead?

One bonus about the Saudi's buying it is no more woke shite in games. EA has hoisted their last LGBT flag.
Feels good, bro.
Can you imagine the tears if the Saudis push out updates for all of EA's games that trigger any Saudi region swaps for homo shit for everyone and not just them?

Not really a surprise. Generation Zero was exactly "OK", but generally fell way short of both its premise and their believe that its somehow an immersive, interactive world style game. I didn't even realize Ravenbound was one of their games, but it was pretty shitty in its core design and failed as a result.

Frankly, they haven't really made much of anything good since mad max. Just Cause 3 was ok, but came out before mad max, and Just Cause 4 was barely even noticed, changed too little and came out too soon after 3. Rage 2 was just lmao, good effort but didn't pan out. The only ones I can't speak to are the call of the wild games, never played them or their competitors, nor have I seen anyone really play or talk about them.

Regardless, one cult classic 10 years ago is not enough to carry a whole group like this, even if its had me wanting to replay it recently.

Most of this probably comes from the official cancelation of Contraband. Which if you don't recall was announced in 2021 when Microsoft was injecting tons of money into fodder to pad out Game Pass. There was a CG trailer and then literally never an update about anything until last month where they said active development had stopped and they parted ways with Xbox as they "evaluate the project's future."

I am guessing the evaluation is done.
