Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

At the entry levels, being incompetent is fine because hopefully the 22-year-old isn't touching serious stuff and incompetence is somewhat expected. Sure, take this code and make X work. If you're retarded, you can't or shouldn't progress.
That's interesting because the same happens in manufacturing. Maintenance engineers can't solve problems or figure out why a machine isn't working, or running well. They change every part of the machine, costing thousands in money in hundreds in manhours, then learn nothing and do the same on the next break down.
Engineers build machines and can't work out why they're not working properly. CI engineers can't actually improve anything.

I'm starting to wonder, especially now I've read your post, that it's less incompetence and lack of IQ, and more the ability to imagine and 'dream'. The imagination separates humans from lesser primates like chimps, monkeys and even neanderthals.

Maybe a new test for screening candidates who can't imagine or think ahead should be introduced.

Really makes you think. :story:
Normal Chinese shit right here, why pay when you're willing to do it free? Doesn't matter if it is maintainable code, you can sell it today, and interview someone to fix it tomorrow. Doesn't matter if that's sustainable long term, you can sell it and cash out cheap before the consequences of that catch up with you.

Many don't know how to problem solve. I no longer directly supervise engineers but when I saw their attempts to delegate up when I did supervise them, I’d ask them what they think, and most of them didn’t have an answer if they couldn’t just apply some general approach. Safe to say many of the “diverse” engineers had no fucking clue and couldn’t or wouldn’t do any problem solving. It was everyone's job to help them out.

Explaining the half-split method to electrical maintenance engineers and then receiving a blank stare from them, not understanding the concept, always amuses me.
I like when a machine breaks and people just start changing random parts using guesses and "a motor once broke on a completely different machine, so this must be the same thing" levels of thought.

The idea of logging faults, explaining how they found it, reviewing the job or root cause investigation is alien to them. It's like trying to teach monkeys algebra.

It turns out that rote memorizing a book for two months doesn't make somebody knowledgeable.

You can teach a man the mechanical properties of steel, but you really can't teach a man to think. Its a skill, it can be learned, but its one of the things that really has to be self driven. Even stuff like teaching someone the general concept of trouble shooting steps requires them to be able to think enough to adapt them to the situation at hand.

Honestly, creativity and adaptability is one of the huge marks against "blank slate" theory.

I'll tolerate a 1-hour tech interview, 1-hour culture interview, and a brief chat w/a C-level or owner if the company wants it, but six fucking hours? lolno. You're wasting my time at that point unless you're paying me. That's an opportunity cost to me if nothing else.

This.

If an interview goes over ~90 minutes they're either bullshitting you or they're having you work for free.

It is kind of fascinating to see EA just completely catch fire after a single one of their sports games has a big miss. Just wait until the 2026 ones drop, and have to start complying with the new EU rules on monetization behaviors, they're gonna lose significant revenue either from people skipping the game, or spending less since they're not being fucked with at every corner in the same way.

The last FIFA (whatever new game they have it) performed way below expectations for them. That should have been a massive story but all the grifter gaming channels were too busy harping on about woke games.

I honestly don’t know who still buys FIFA, Madden, etc. every year as the gameplay hasn’t really changed that much in years.

I have many friends who just buy Madden as their only game and they’ve been doing it since the PS2 days. I do find it very interesting though that the PS2 Maddens contain more features than the current. You’d assume with these incremental annual installments that they could just keep it together but these games have been on a serious decline these last several years.

All for a new roster too, which is significantly worse than any gacha game.
