Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

The skills are transferable and the jobs are highly paid if you’re an actual game developer (Big Tech and Wall Street love to hire people with good math skills and low level programming knowledge). However, if you call yourself a “game dev” and all you do is script NPC paths, you’ll be poorly paid with no transferable skills.
Can't emphasis this point enough. Very few "Game devs" actually develop anything, they just use tools the developer made for the Designers to use - because that's all they are. That's why you'll see titles like level designer, gameplay designer, etc - they just set up inside the technical sandbox. The rare crossover, when business even permits it, tend to be wizards, who can make the tools and low level code to solve their problems and implement their features. That's your Carmacks and the like, and they're the folks who walk off and make solo games to threaten the entire industry.

>I'd rather go back to school than work in an office again
Big, Butt-Fucking, Outch!

You'd think all of this shit would be a wake-up call to white-collar jobs that maybe, just maybe, what they are doing, and have been doing for so many years is clearly not working anymore and that they should revamp how they do things that both benefit the company and the employees working there.

In fact, I can help with that. New Rule #1 Paragraph #1 Bullet point #1 - NO HR DEPARTMENTS, EVER!

Eh, let's see how many of them actually walk off the job and go back to school before we celebrate this sudden development of backbones among the kind of soys who fill the white-collar jobs at Amazon HQ.

Again, if your job can be done from home, your job can be done from India.

So either suck it up, be an adult, and go back or get ready for a future of unemployment whilst others do the needful.

They already did that. They brought half of India to Seattle, pushed out the employees who built AWS, and they now they can't hire any actual talent thanks to their shitty open offices with non-assigned desks and zero amenities, their toxic management culture, their habit of relocating teams and projects halfway across the world for no reason, and their mandatory on-call where fixing root causes is discouraged because it reduces solved ticket volume. They also have a terrible stock vesting schedule that requires you to be there for two years before you get your pay; their competitors vest quarterly or faster.

Seems like another one of those soft layoffs (am I saying that right?). Cut down on bloat, no WARN. Win win for the stockholders.

Lol they'll cope and seethe but the overall industry can't absorb a bunch of whiny ex Amazon employees.

Most places are returning to 2-3 days a week in office now.

My company just opened a shiny new HQ and we're in it 3 days a week.

100% WFH isn't a given anymore as companies wised up to people taking on 2-3 jobs at once and collecting 2-3 paychecks at a time at home plus garbage productivity and "soft vacations" where people would fly overseas and be a backpacker while logging in via a VPN once during business hours.

Then when an emergency happened they're saying "oh I'm having an XYZ emergency and I can't make it on the call until next week" and fly home....

No one goes into Amazon not knowing it is a shit place to work. It's your fault if you are there for more than 2 years. Get in, stop caring, and find a new job before they fire you is the only mentality you should have if you decide to work for them.

It's absolutely this. RTO is just another way to do layoffs without being obvious about it.
I guarantee you the people leaving will be replaced by people in India and the Philippines. They certainly won't be needing to commute to Seattle.

AI will end up being just as much of a disaster as hiring jeets but I guess anything is better than hiring white men, their DEI plans have committed to ensuring their workforce looks just like their customers!

I'm torn on the RTO thing.

On one hand, offices can be a shit place to work if it's open plan and staffed with the wrong people.

OTOH, these free-loading lazy fucks who are kicking up a fuss because their two year holiday has ended and now have to go back to do actual work instead of sitting at home in their PJs getting licked out by their dog, can go fuck themselves.
Get off your fat fucking arse, put some respectable, smart business clothes on and get back to work you lazy, workshy, unproductive, free-loading motherfuckers.
And before some faggot says "but muh work from home for 30 years im productive" nobody cares, that why you've wfh for 30 years. 99% of the people who have left the office and refuse to come back should be fired on the spot. It's only entitled women, trannies and faggots that are against it anyway.

Do the fucking job you signed up for or get the fuck out. Business should be run like the tight ships that they used to be, not daycare for feckless manchildren.

The proper solution is to fire fucks who don't get the work done, not drag them into a chair to then get no work done. If you have to rely on trying to isolate and bore someone into doing their job, they should be out the fucking door anyway.

This is the situation in my place. I’m having a meeting with my managers soon over this. If people find it hard to do the job or even just come in they need to get a new job. I shouldn’t have to be picking up a ton of shit in the office because people are crying about turning up.

Kids learn jackshit while studying from home yet, somehow, I'm supposed to believe you work the same while working from home?
