Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

"There is joy in doing something you're really good at, and I miss that feeling."

- A person who was not good at what they did and did major damage to their company before being discarded like garbage.

In a week when Xbox fans were hoping to hear a response from Microsoft to the PS5 Pro, the software giant is making a third round of gaming layoffs instead. 650 employees at Microsoft’s gaming business are being laid off, part of continued cuts at Xbox after Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Xbox fans do not want a "response" to the PS5 Pro. It is a comically overpriced system that is in a category all of it's own.

The average game dev career is 5 years (even before the current deluge of layoffs). Now it's just topical. The system is more than happy to repeatedly chew up tons and tons of passionate nerds.

What I really hope this means is a couple of senior devs realize you don't have to have HR if the company is under 50 people and can hire/do anything they want if they keep it nice and lean.

If you’ve got a gang of autistic men working for you you need some form of HR. Just don’t hire danger hairs for the HR positions.

Why don’t these developers just learn to code?
They unironically dont. Full Sail graduates learn super niche technologies and tools and they spend 5 years of their career going futher down niche tools and patterns nobody else does while living in high col areas.

Most of them are at basically new college grad skill level when they decide to fuck off and go to enterprise and do full stack or Java grinding code. They do ramp up way faster with knowing how to do the office grind at least but their code is shit and they arent interested in junior dev salaries despite being junior skill starting out.

Yes they have wizards like Carmarck. Those guys dont get laid off unless they are sex pests, and they know they can leave and get a higher paid job so they give no fucks.

Nah you dont, you just need to hire one bully. pay him 100k and have him play test when his skills arent needed.

You posted Furry porn on X? into the locker you go.

Just force everyone to work in assembly...

> Unlike prior layoffs, no studios are being closed this time, either. The 650 job cuts will primarily impact “corporate and supporting functions,” according to Spencer, meaning cuts to HR and marketing roles.

So, pest control.

When'd game devs ever make as much money as the techbro jobs? Don't they exactly take a pay cut to work for blizzard or activision?

I'm thankful for this bubble bursting. So fucking tiring to see these life-experience lacking blobs ez mode their way to great jobs with zero "any other job market" skills. Bad resume, bad applications, bad hygiene, no charisma. But hey, "uhh how many days can I work from home? I dont wanna talk to anyone haha" is totally appealing right? That's what an employer wants to hear, clearly.

Until now, when they don't.

If you’re job can be done from home then your job can be done from India.

Game devs dont take a cut because most of them start in the industry to begin with and cant leave because the skills arent transferable.

There are ones that make money like Notch. But its rare if you arent on the ground floor of a studio opening.

The skills are transferable and the jobs are highly paid if you’re an actual game developer (Big Tech and Wall Street love to hire people with good math skills and low level programming knowledge). However, if you call yourself a “game dev” and all you do is script NPC paths, you’ll be poorly paid with no transferable skills.

Not just pest control but likely removing actual redundancy.

You don't need two full marketing teams (one from MS, one from ABK) when one will suffice. You don't need two full sets of "Creator Outreach" or "Live Event Planning" and so on and so forth.

It sucks if you're affected but there's no reason to think that the much larger MS company doesn't have someone already doing your job in a takeover.

Thats a minority of what they are calling the "devs". To the point where i believe the "core team" they get different titles now in some shop (with higher pay)

Not just game devs, but certainly especially game devs.
Every tech company wants fresh graduates to burnout and spit out, but game companies are the ones who can get them cheapest. Any company needing someone for "boring" work is going to have to pay more.

Neon White was neat at least.
