It depends on the root cause.

Chemicals won't do you any good in the long run, so the first response is actually good (sleep, exercise, sunshine, I'll add diet as well), but you must also detect the cause, like if you're depressed due to emotional trauma, then the approach will be to, on top of the previous, try to heal it through introspection, patience, and hope. Maybe therapy as well, but a lot of "professionals" are shit.
