This takes the same leaps in logic that Battlefield 1 took. In BF1 we have a campaign where you play as a man in full plate armor walking around with a minigun. WW1 was the evolution from Napoleonic to modern warfare but what they did in that game was nothing short of fantasy. A woman, with a fake hand, shooting a gun isn't an outrageous change of pace from its predecessor.

I'm not intimately familiar with other Battlefield games but they obviously want to bend history. No big deal.

Well yeah it's the old "my 8 year old daughter asked why i can't select a girl in BFV" story. Even though that's not even the issue people are even talking about. Everyone who knows anything about WW2 knows there were women combatants in WW2, no one is contesting that. It's just the same ol brick wall PR spin.

If people hate women in games so much why are Metroid and Tomb Raider two of the most popular and beloved franchises of all time? It's almost like these people are lying hacks or something.

Amazing how his reaction is to imply that the guy was being racist and misogynist.

I really love how discussing the game has become a complete minefield. Had to unsubscribe from one of my favorite subreddits since they had their minds made up that anyone who wasn't a fan of the game's character customization was "problematic" (and were acting all bitter over Kingdom Come: Deliverance for good measure).

Literally all they had to do was do a press release saying "Okay there was some confusing, BFV is inspired by WW2, it isn't literally WW2, we thought it'd be better to allow for more options to customize characters"

But what was the response "We are proud to add Women to BFV, we are on the right side of history, if you don't like it, you hate Women"

Either they have the egos the size of a boat, and the mentality of children, or the marketing department thought attacking critics with accusations of bigotry was a good marketing move.

At this point EA is a lolcow company and I thought this Whole debacle was worthy of a thread.
 
imagine complaining about a woman fighting in combat wearing a prosthetic during wwii being unrealistic, but then finding out later on such a person existed. that'd be funny
 
I've never really been invested with the Battlefield franchise, so I don't feel much either way about this. Irregardless, here are some thoughts on the matter because apparently I have nothing better to do with my time...

1) "OMG IT'S GONE FULL SJW!!" Mmnnnot yet. Close, but not yet. Right now I'm placing this under the "We're a big ass fucking franchise and we like money so we're going to whore ourselves out to look like we give a shit about diversity" category. If they have a character in the middle of the campaign that brings everything to a screeching halt to lecture the player about the plights of transgenders or anything of the sort that feels like an incredibly ham-fisted segway to reflect on the here and now, then yeah. Right now though all we got is a pissed-off one-armed Brit.

2) "BUT IT'S NOT AN ACCURATE REPRESENTATION!!" I can go half and half on this. On one side, yeah I totally agree whichever developer said said this is supposed to be an a historic recreation is talking out of their ass. On the other hand in regards to the fantards bitching about accuracy, this is a game franchise where you heal allies who got shot in the face with a shotgun by giving them electric shocks. This is a game franchise, whose game highlights usually include a clip of some hotshot ejecting out of a plane going Mach 3, shooting an enemy pilot in the face midair with a sniper rifle then stealing the now dead pilot's Apache. The game has been pure action movie fluff for years now so having it play fast and loose to the point of being ridiculous isn't new.

3) "SO YOU'RE SOME SOYBOY WHO THINKS THIS IS OKAY?!" I'm not saying that. Personally, I find this kind of stuff nowadays to be low-tier pandering that isn't worth getting worked up over. If anything, I find it disappointing how we've decided to swap out the "gruff buzzcut white dude with issues" game stereotype, with the "snarky punk-rock looking white girl who don't need no man" stereotype. It's nothing new except now if you're critical of it, you get the joys of being at least four or five words ending in "-ist." And most, I find this kind of inclusion eye-rollingly rote and painfully boring.


tl;dr - Ain't nothing new underneath the sun in vidyagameland.

To me it's less a question of "why does anyone like making fun of people in their inexorable journey from cradle to grave" and more "Why do people care so much about the plot of a video game where 99% of the playerbase doesn't even turn on the single player"

Why in the past few Current Years has attacking and shaming potential customers become such a common marketing tactic? EA makes profits on bulk sales. EA has shuttered formerly successful studios for less.

I can't believe that was actually the biggest issue people took with the trailer and not how hilariously over-the-top and boring it was.
I mean the entire trailer just screamed "FAKE AS SHIT" despite eventually getting the multiplayer hud later for no reason. And all of the characters were acting like goofy action heroes instead of people. I mean what the fuck were they actually thinking? This is literally a 12 year old's vision of WW2 and lacks all of the charm of other shooters that go over-the-top and silly.
But I guess a woman with a retarded prosthetic being present is a bigger issue than any of that. Remove the woman and I doubt anyone would have an issue with that garbage.
