always happy to see a retro game channel that isnt 99.99% nintendo slop 4 hour essays about the lore of a sprite in the background of one level in a spinoff
That sounds based but yes, I agree.

It's also nice to see a channel going over autistic retro Japanese computer games (including a few eroge) where the guy running it is just a chill boomer and not a porn-brained troon.

Amelie Doree is the only other person I know who regularly covers obscure Japanese PC/niche console shit but it's hard to watch because "uwu i'm a smol bean lesbian with a penis" is a schtick that gets old really quickly.
I can't stand that foul tranny's voice. Somebody should dub AI over him with a tolerable voice.

There used to be one called Bowl of Lentils but she only did, like, twelve videos before vanishing.
Pretty sure that's a dude, iirc.

He just put out a new video recently after being gone for 2 years:

Apparently he's been cooking this one for a while and it was definitely worth it.

Interesting, figured that was a dead channel now. Thanks for the heads up.
Nah, Lentils is still pretty active on his other social media accounts. He just doesn't do youtube as a job. I think he technically gets money from youtube ads but it's like a dollar or two per month and he doesn't have youtube superberries turned on or a patreon.

What impresses me is how much Japanese PC games are aesthetically similar to console games. As an American I always felt the two were worlds apart so its really kind of weird to see a game that looks like something I would have played on the SNES or Genesis, but its on an old PC.

It honestly fucks with my brain a bit, because I see games like Emerald Dragon and a part of me is nostalgic for that era of JRPG, but it's ever so slightly "wrong" because its not on a console (although there was a Super Famicom port later). I'm probably not making sense. It's sort of like looking into an alternate timeline where Super Mario Kart was a Sega CD game.
That's because your only frame of reference for a computer game is DOS/Windows. You have stuff like the original black and white Macintosh with its distinct, crisp pixels (rarely used in making retro-style games, but notably used for Return of the Obra Dinn), you have the Commodore-64 with its own aesthetics (distinctive "crunchy" music due to its flexible sound chip, and graphics that look like halfway between the Intellivision and the NES), you got the Amiga, and so forth and so on.

RPG Maker being an MSX program first is one of those totally obvious and utterly brain-breaking factoids I love this channel for. It never occured to me that there were entire generations of RPG maker slop before I ever became aware of it.

I automatically assumed it was a Windows only thing. I wonder if the games made with it are better or worse, I feel like any jap nerds using RPG Maker for PC-98 must have been a cut above for some reason.

It's back. Played the remaster on the PSP. Pretty good horror game due to having zero qualms on murdering character horrifically, with some amazing bad ends. Unfortunately sequels of it were mid to terrible.

That's the one I played too. I really liked it, but yeah, the sequel was whatever.
