This is a degree worse than the 400lb old man bragging about how he won the big sportsball game though, and I say that because its based on consuming a product instead of having accomplished anything personal--no, high scores and speedruns never count as real achievements.
It reminds me of those retro game world record cheaters. Not only did guys like Billy Mitchell and Todd Rogers get famous over fake or cheated records, they're lolsuit happy over anyone calling them out.

What do you suppose causes this in people?
I really don't know what else to blame it on, outside of an autist being entrenched in denial.
>Balan Wonderworld comes out as a half-baked dogshit product where everything is only done using one button
"It's not Naka's fault, it was Arzest! They can't make good games!"
For instance, who else can people blame if the gameplay is widely considered to be an retarded idea.

I remain convinced that this stuff only came to light because Naka tried to fight SE on the Balan debacle and they had dirt on him that he didn't know about.

Which is turning out to be pretty hillarious. Never knew the papa of Sonic was such a sped till the Balan fallout, but knowing Sonic fans it's not really surprising.

Its possible that it would have come to light regardless due to naka's infamy, but I totally believe Squenix will slap him as hard as legally possible thanks to his stunt over balan. Everyone involved in sonic is cursed, from naka eternally self-immolating to the current head of sonic team being trapped in corporate hell, to say nothing of all the chrises, penders, and psyguys orbiting the series.

If a corporate property can have a mid-life crisis, sonic is it.

Yuji Naka sentenced

translated version via DeepL:
Yuji Naka, 57, a former employee of the video game giant Square Enix, was sentenced in Tokyo District Court on April 7 for violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law in an insider trading case involving former employees of the company.

Judge Enka Hiruta sentenced the defendant to two years and six months in prison, suspended for four years, a fine of 2 million yen, and a surcharge of approximately 171 million yen (the defendant was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, a fine of 2.5 million yen, and a surcharge of approximately 171 million yen).

Naka is known as the creator of the popular "Sonic" series and other games while at Sega, a major video game company.

Judge Hiruta noted that "he was expected to play an important role (by SQUANI) and was authorized to access information related to ongoing game development. He was expected to play an important role (by SQUANI) and was authorized to access information about ongoing game development. The court then ruled that the defendant's sentence should be suspended because he has acknowledged the charges against him and has shown remorse.

According to the verdict, the defendant Naka received information on the development of "Dragon Quest" and "Final Fantasy" games for smartphones and purchased a total of 130,000 shares of stock in the two production companies that had jointly developed the games for approximately 147 million yen from 2020 to 2009, before the games were publicly announced.

It was originally going to be six years (2 years prison time, 4 years probation), but it seems he somehow got off lucky with this update

Another article with the update (in english)
UPDATE: We’ve learned that this involves a 4-year suspended sentence, during which time Naka will be on probation. This means it’s likely Naka won’t actually serve any time in prison, so long as he stays out of trouble with the law during those four years. Thanks to Cheesemeister3K for the update on this, and you can see our original report below.

Back in late 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka was arrested twice on suspicion of insider trading at Square Enix. According to reports, Naka was using early information about upcoming games/collaborations to buy stock and make a quick buck. Back in March, Naka confirmed these suspicions.

During a trial with the Tokyo District Court, Naka admitted to insider trading, which violates Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. Naka had traded $1 million in stocks while being employed by Square Enix. Specifically, Naka said there was ‘no doubt’ he knew details about upcoming games before they were shared publicly, and used that information to benefit financially.

Today we’ve learned that Yuji Naka has officially been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and four years probation. Along with that comes two separate fines that amount to roughly $1.25 million.
