How is he a fraud? Just because he’s a programmer/director who found their talent outpaced by technology and evolving gaming trends doesn’t make him a fraud. There was a window in which his skill set made some entertaining and dynamic games.
He's just a talented programmer for a system released 30 years ago and never bothered to improve or learn.

He's a fraud whose been riding that Sonic train for any notoriety.

Calling him a fraud implies that he was never good or that his success was somehow an accident. Perhaps I’m being too generous, but I think that’s far too harsh a judgment on Naka. One hit wonder or flash in the pan? Yeah. Fraud? Not so much.

Of course it was an accident. Sonic was (and still is) a silly novelty that only caught on because it was brilliantly marketed at just the right time. Objectively, its basic formula is completely mediocre and has never evolved in any meaningful way for the last 30 years, because enough weirdos who fell in love with it when they were 10 are still buying rehashed Sonic games now at 40.

I can’t really defend the franchise on its artistic merits, but you can’t say that something has persisted for thirty years by accident, and pretending that it’s only legacy fans who are playing the games and watching the movie is delusional.

I didn't say it's persisted by accident, I said its initial success was, from a design standpoint, an accident. If Yuji Naka had created a talking donut that rolls down hills very fast, we'd be discussing the merits of Rollie the Donut here instead.

Rollie the donutche is the best web comic by Christopher-san.

Haven't watched Dunkey in a while but his video shows quite a bit of the game. Particularly how pointless most of the power-ups are.

Reminder that the limited edition is not even a box, and just junk in a bag with another bag in it, an artbook that is more screenshots with thank you from the devs,a (to be fair, good looking) pin, the soundtrack and the game.
FOR 130 DOLLARS.

Wow, it really was all just loose in a bag, they couldn't even be bothered to put it in a cardboard box with the logo on it or something.
The pin looks nice, although I'm surprised they didn't include the Tim plush they made as well. I doubt they'll be selling many, might as well throw it in for people silly enough to buy the collector's edition of Balan

Ultimatly it was a better idea to do it this way, they are now selling this not as a collectors edition but you can just buy what you want now.

Is it just me or does Balan look like a rejected Hazbin Hotel character design?
Hazbin Hotel designs are rejected NiGHTS characters, more accurately.

As someone who spent his autistic early teenage years fraternizing with the with the fanbase, it's amazing how much the cast of Tumblr Hotel look like the many endless NiGHTS OCs I've seen throughout the years.

Sometimes using only Sega nostalgia doesn't make a game good.

I am also in the same view that Naka just too far from current gaming trends as it happens to a lot of designers and programmers in gaming.

Also that Ghost n Ghouls on the Genesis he programed is dank and my go to for a hard ass challenge.

The reason why this game has 80 costume powerups is because he made this game to appeal to furries thinking it would translate into merch sales. Having a half done game that rides on fictional animal porn only works for Pokemon.

The Shenmue guy just blatantly saying he's not interested in following current gaming trends was the funniest shit. I hadn't considered it before but I guess it wouldn't be surprising if that's what happened here too.
