You're overthinking it. I stopped reading maybe ten or so years ago and occasionally dip in here and there, but I used to be a dedicated fan. And here's one thing you need to know about Jeph: He is terrible at planning out his ideas. The only time he stuck with a planned arc was Faye's mysterious past. For 500 strips, it's made clear something happened before she came into the strip. Her accent she tries to hide, a scar she at first refuses to talk about and then later reveals was a car accident, being possessive with Marten but refusing to admit she has any feelings, and then we get the reveal and worked.
Aside from that, however? He would introduce plot points and characters, only to do nothing with them. Hell, he introduced a character who was into Marten, Faye's coworker, Sara, only to decide not to do anything with it. And that was within the first 30 pages. Then she disappeared because Jeph found her boring. Marten would repeatedly declare he was going to focus on music again, only for that to fall apart within a week or two. Side characters would constantly be dropped for months, Jeph would bring them back while making a big deal about and then forget to use them again within a week or two.
The robot thing is one of those times. In one arc, Hannelore's father sends her a human sized robot that is this brand new thing people aren't use to that she uploads Winslow into. A thousand or so pages later, it's revealed that when Marten applied for Pintsize, he was interviewed by a human sized robot. And somehow robots went from uncanny valley to relatively human looking within a few months of comic time. The only reason they became an oppressed class was because a bunch of Jeph's webcomic friends were being pressured on Tumblr to do more SJW shit. So he half-assed it like he usually does with the comic.

So this is hilarious. Tat also just updated the news to a begpost that he needs money to save the comic. He's asked for donations before, but I don't think he's EVER pulled the "give me money or I'll end the comic" card. After it stopped being good, Sinfest went from radical second wave feminism, to anti-vax MAGA, to anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, Aryan Neo-Nazi LARP. Who does Tat think is left that he hasn't alienated in the past few years?

There's a small number of unironic Esoteric Nazis that flat out do not know Tat's past and agree with his views. Or boomers that likewise don't know from where he's from and believe he's Cute Stonetoss. They're rare, but they exist. The issue is that anyone that knows Tats well enough to consider giving him money.... well, knows Tats well enough to consider he has been a complete arsehole to essentially anyone sooner or later.
His only saving grace is great OPSEC. I guess he could change name, abandon the comic and go work in some low-tier minimum wage job to avoid starvation, all while slowly cooking with jew-hatred beyond comparison.
He can't even push the traditional emergency button, lewding his characters. I think he would collapse emotionally in being forced to draw porn of his lovelies to survive.
I looked up Stormfront a while back and he was popular there. Haven’t checked lately though. I could even see some of the people there getting butthurt that he’s criticizing Christianity. I might have to see if he’s still popular there.
Anyway, he’ll probably do what other artists do: adopt a new name and create new art elsewhere. The only problem is, starting from scratch as an artist is way harder than being able to refer your current fans to your new work and he can’t do that.

Apparently MT's modest host server was constantly pegged at 100% CPU from AI scrapers targeting the forums. Taking them offline completely alleviated the issue and according to the admin they're probably not ever returning. Of course the original forums died back in 2017 and were de facto dead long before that, but for the first time in over 25 years the MT forums subdomain will be dormant. Pour out a Ramune for your weeb homies.
It's not a good article and not really worth reading. The writer is entirely too far up their own ass. Their central thesis seems to be that Fred is a victim of capitalism and that if we had UBI he would be free to create MT on a regular schedule.
It is however a nice way of seeing 25 years of the story written out on a simple timeline. In the comic, less than a month has passed. Piro and Largo still exist in a pre-9/11, pre-smartphone world.
And Fred *really* liked surrounding his self-insert with nubile young Japanese schoolgirls.

I wish Project Wonderful was still around because when the Matriarchy shit started happening, you could see the downturn in views and money. I said it before but Fred's issue wasn't money, it was the fact that he got bored with making MT and procrastinated, sometimes not even putting up finished pages so he could finally get something out. Whenever he did side stories with the characters, the pages came out much more frequently. The problem is if he wrapped up MT, then that's his income gone. Their son just turned 18, pretty sure they only had the one kid, and Sarah had cancer, twice I think, so I doubt they have much in the way of savings, especially if the boy's going to college.
Fred was born in 1968 so that means he's seven years away from 65, retirement age. And I doubt he has much to support him for that day.

I've been reading through some old Sinfest and it is legitimately depressing how far it's fallen. Over 25 years ago, before the Twin Towers fell, Sinfest was a clever, funny, creative comic. You could never tell what Tat really believed about anything because he would make fun of it all. He came up with a great cast, unique gimmick comics like the Calligraphy series, good jokes, fun characters.
It got a little political with Obama, but a lot of people were on that hype train. It felt more like celebrity worship than anything. It didn't take over the comic, and politics aside, it might have been the best era of Sinfest. I probably don't need to tell anybody here what happened after that. It's hard to believe that the why is still a mystery.
I don't think it's the typical artist thing of getting burned out and wanting to try something new. I mean, say what you will, but Tat has a work ethic. Has he EVER missed a day since Sinfest started? I don't think this is even a David Willis situation where he was capable of being funny, but decided he'd rather be extremely important on the internet. I legitimately think Tat lost his fucking mind at some point and it's been a downhill spiral ever since. I really, REALLY wish we knew why. Tat is legitimately talented and he's been wasting it for 60% of Sinfest's lifespan. Why couldn't he just put the comics in the bag?

The mystery is its some pussy he was after. I have never been able to get the details but he was dating to trying to some anti-porn (but pro sex worker!) WRA which is why the hard shift. She left him and now we get Modern Sinfest.
We know incredibly little about Tats private life or career. Even the usual "look what the lack of pussy does to a mf" is simply conjecture based on the fact that men usually collapse into feminist ramblings when they are whipped by some harpy or are trying to fuck the aforementioned harpy. There's some incredibly thin theorizing about relationships based on his self-representation in the comics (2-3 strips have a female figure interacting with Tats' avatar and something that could be a reference to a breakup) but it's all speculation.
Of the precious little things we know (from the incredibly rare interviews he gave ages ago), is that Tats wasn't cut for the real comic industry, failing to work properly at Dark Horse/Marvel and being flat-out caught for plagiarism. His attempt to make Sinfest into a Real Comic back in the late 2010ies with paper books was also apparently..... difficult, who knows why. He jokes he was a primadonna that burned through editors, but for example if Frank Cho managed to stick in despite being kind of an arsehole one can only wonders how bad Tats was.
So, one could argue that Tats has work ethic when he is working for himself. He has poured his soul in Sinfest, it's just that as a old broken man his soul is a angry antisemitic scream of pain because he didn't get the hot big-tits romance or the art success he was going for. But in the end, we'll never know.
As much as I can laugh at him, the last few weeks have been.... it's not even funny, it's simply sad. One can be funny with Hitler memes and the like, but the impotent rage Tats has when he draws evil Soviet jewish reddit mods persecuting him while he begs for money is simply.... sad. There is such thing as antisemitism as a mental illness? When you are irrationally convinced that your personal failures are caused by the Joos?
