Blood Meridian the TLDR is that after a book full of witnessing and partaking in ultra edgy shit, the viewpoint character meets up with my hairless albino namesake who is kinda/sorta/maybe the avatar of ultra edgy shit, who gives yet another sermon on how ultra edgy shit is the sacred pinnacle of human existence because will to power and stuff and...yeah I am
heavily TLDR'ing it here, but the viewpoint character retorts by pointing out that by this logic animals are at the same sacred pinnacle of humanity because they freely partake in ultra edgy shit in the wild, to which my hairless albino namesake has little response but to rape him to death in the nearest outhouse....kinda...sorta...maybe....there are like fifty different interpretations of the ending and everything I just TLDR'd.
My mangling of literary classics aside, I always find this quote worth remembering whenever I see work getting fawned over solely because it has edgy subject matter even if the actual quality of the work is shit that would be ignored or derided were it not for crowbarring in said edgy subject matter
(i.e. the entire literary canon of Garth Ennis).
Any talentless hack or autist can depict shit that provokes an involuntary surge of shock or revulsion or even distress like rape or child rape in their work, but this doesn't make said hack or autist some worthy writer or creator for doing so. Sure there are writers and creators who can and do depict shit like this in a way that stands on its own merits, but thats because of their own talent and not because the subject matter automatically confers some magical boon on the shit they do.
Heck, one can step away from edgy shit in particular and apply this to other cheap gimmicks used by shitty creators to get attention and praise from retards, like jump scares/gore in horror, shock/cringe content in comedy, or politics/references/nostalgia in....fucking everything. The notion that specific subject matter is automatically entitled to uncritical praise and attention solely because of some inherent importance or value is one of the main reasons why the past decade of cawntent has been so fucking shit.
With this specimen in particular, remove the child rape element and you remove the one thing of note about his quarter century of work. Hence why he clings to it like a fucking lifebelt.
