War Azerbaijan planning 'full-scale war', Armenia warns - Azerbaijan is planning a "full-scale war" against Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan warned Thursday, two days after a skirmish on their border left four Armenian troops dead.

Tensions between the two Caucasus neighbours have remained high since Baku re-captured the Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh last September in a lightning military offensive.

"Our analysis shows that Azerbaijan wants to launch military action in some parts of the border with the prospect of turning military escalation into a full-scale war against Armenia," Pashinyan said at a government meeting.

"This intention can be read in all statements and actions of Azerbaijan," he added.

Yerevan is concerned that Azerbaijan, emboldened by its success in Karabakh, could invade Armenian territory in order to create a land bridge to its exclave of Nakhchivan.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who won re-election this month, said in an inauguration speech Wednesday it was Armenia, not Azerbaijan, that had outstanding territorial claims.

Pashinyan and Aliyev previously said a peace agreement could have been signed by the end of last year, but internationally mediated peace talks have failed to yield a breakthrough.

On Tuesday, both sides accused each other of opening fire on their volatile border, in a skirmish Armenia said left four of its soldiers dead.

Boils down to geopolitics.

To summarize the situation:
1. Azerbaijan doesn't get along with Armenia
2. Azeri nationalist and irredentist groups claim Iranian Azerbaijan to their south which has an Azeri minority population.
3. Iran backs Armenia because of concerns about Azerbaijan.
4. Israel backs Azerbaijan because of Iran.

The Iranians have interests in making sure Azerbaijan doesn't get too powerful and the Israelis have interests in making Iran weaker.

Armenia is a member of CSTO, so it is in a military alliance with Russia, for all the good that's doing for them. I believe France has stuck up for Armenia, at least diplomatically.
While Armenia likely has sympathies among the NATO powers, I find it very unlikely any Western party will give aid to a member of a Russian military alliance. It's a situation where neither side has much support in the West and I don't see the West getting involved.

If you're so sure you're going to be invaded, where are your new battalions? Where's the recruitment effort? Are you encouraging paramilitary groups to start forming and organizing? Are you buying weapons and equipment from anybody who will sell them to you? There's a huge Armenian diaspora around the world, are you trying to make some money off them to aid the inevitable war effort and getting a mechanism for recruitment of "foreigners" ready? Trying to attain funding for mercenaries, if you really can't find anybody else? Asking Russia for small arms, explosives, trucks, cars and whatever they capture and don't have immediate need for?

Spoiler alert: They're doing none of the above. When another war inevitably happens, they're going to get curbstomped because they didn't even bother, they're going to lose more territory and get ethnically cleansed from another few hundred miles of land, and they're going to shit their pants and whine and complain that Russia didn't go fight their war for them.

Armenia is a member of CSTO, so it is in a military alliance with Russia, for all the good that's doing for them.

The prior conflict was in a region that ALL participants, even Armenia, did not recognize as part of Armenia itself. CSTO only recognizes invasions into core sovereign territory as worthy of a call to action, same as NATO. This is how Argentina could fuck with the Falklands without the whole NATO dogpile happening. If the Azeri invade Armenia proper then it sets off a serious chain of unknowns, Russia is busy with Ukraine but it still have enough forces available that would make the Azeri pull up short because a two, potentially three front war if Iran got involved would not be ideal.
