VIENNA, Austria — New Austrian legislation came into force Friday that will ban the full-face Islamic veil in public places from October 1.

The outlawing of the burqa or other clothing concealing the face follows similar moves in other countries in the European Union, starting with France in 2011.

In Austria, people who break the new law could be fined up to 150 euros ($168), according to the legislation approved by parliament in May and signed into law by the president this week.

Other measures include a clampdown on distributing extremist material, and immigrants being obliged to sign an “integration contract.”

A 12-month “integration program” will include courses in “values” and the German language. Failure to attend can result in cuts to social security payments.

The legislation was hammered out by the centrist government amid strong support for the far-right and the arrival of 90,000 asylum-seekers since 2015.

The “grand coalition” under Chancellor Christian Kern collapsed last month and early elections were called for October 15.

The far-right Freedom Party (FPOe), whose candidate came close to winning the largely ceremonial presidency last year, is riding high in opinion polls ahead of the vote.

I'm still pretty stupefied that these idiots think superficial bullshit, mostly aimed at harassing women, is going to fix anything.

It's not the shit that chicks wear that is blowing people up. It's the shit that DUDES DO.

Actually I heard that the thick black robes were used in the past to hide bombs. It is not a big deal, but at least its a start.

I Hope the rest of Europe follows their footsteps.

I think this is more of an 'integrate or get the fuck out' measure rather than a terrorist prevention one guys...

For those freaking out about it, they should know that there are other articles of clothing for Muslim women to wear without lawful repercussion such as the hijab. After all, burqas are more associated with extreme groups such as the Wahabbists.

I will always associate burqas with the Taliban. Fuck burqas.

Idk about this. If they can't wear their burqas, aren't they just going to like.. not go outside then? Is that better?

Oh but I thought Austria had "rejected" right-wing nationalism when they didn't elect Hofer? Guess all those voters didn't just magically vanish or slink away and still need appeasing.

OT seems pretty pointless and anti-freedom IMO but if the sentiment behind it is bringing attention to the many negative practices of Islam then I'll support it until it's not needed. We certainly wouldn't get anything like that in Blighty I'll tell you that for nowt.

So if we ban Halal meat as animal cruelty then they'll all starve?

More likely they'll go veggie.

As for a British Burqa Ban, I've heard rumblings that it's being considered after Manchester. Theresa May may be a fucking dunce, but she desperately wants to do something about the integration problem, and white van man (and granny and grampa) will love her forever if she does so.

Good, it's about time more nations did this.

It's been muttered about for far longer than that, but the last two attacks may have pushed it up the priority list, even in the Blair government they knew there was an integration problem but they didn't do anything about it nobody did and let it fester and now it's not just becoming a serious issue that's spilling onto the streets and the governments are going to have to face up to the uncomfortable fact that they have a society inside there own society that causes problems.

Somebody at a I2 said it best "We need to address that multicultural societies don't work, multi-ethnic ones do".

Well, as long as they're not forcing their own women to start covering themselves to please the immigrants/refugees, I'm okay.

Oh yeah, you often find this subject is usually the most popular petition on the official e-gov page, but it tends to get shot down a lot.

After the General election, I wouldn't be surprised if Theresa pushes it through just to attempt to rebuild her credibility and at the same time, pull down Jihadi Jez a peg or two.

I hope this law will also exist in Germany in the future. Hijab and Khimar are okay but I want to see the face of the opposing person.

Indeed. I can't go into a bank wearing a crash helmet or something that obscures my face, why is the niqab or burqa allowed?

What's to stop crooks using them as a convenient disguise?
