Austin officials are facing a major backlash after a vote that would permit the city's homeless population to sleep or camp in any public area -- with few exceptions, such as City Hall.

Austin’s City Council repealed a homeless camping ban on June 20, meaning people may now sit, lie down and camp in most public places where they previously wouldn't have legally been able to. The change went into effect Monday.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said Friday that wide sidewalks, such as ones on Congress Avenue, are the likely places residents and business owners can expect to see a spike in loitering, KEYE reported.

“There may be opportunities now for individuals to erect a structure or a tent or some type of protection in spaces where before that would not have been allowed,” Manley said.

Assistant Austin Police Chief Justin Newsom said Monday that, as long as the people or structures aren’t “completely blocking the ability for people to pass” or present a “health or safety risk,” then they will be allowed to remain where they are, FOX7reported.

The change came with few exceptions -- but one notable area where the ban will still be enforced is City Hall, a move the city says it will review and which opponents say is hypocritical at best.

Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott slammed the local government over the change, threatening to override the new local ordinance.

“If Austin— or any other Texas city—permits camping on city streets it will be yet another local ordinance the State of Texas will override,” he tweeted.

“At some point cities must start putting public safety & common sense first. There are far better solutions for the homeless & citizens.”

Mayor Steve Adler fired back saying the city “remains laser focused on public safety and health,” arguing not every homeless person poses a safety risk and should not be arrested and treated as if they were dangerous.

“We need to be able to tell people not only where they can’t be, but also where they can be. We need places where homeless folks can be safe and surrounded by social workers and others getting them the help and support they need,” he said in a statement.

Adler argued Austin’s plan to address homelessness could serve as “a national model.”

For now, police officers will only be able to arrest or ticket a homeless person if they meet the criteria of being a health or safety risk.

"could serve as national model"

Are they fucking delusional? This shit is everywhere in California. It already exists. And it sucks and nobody wins.

There are three types of homeless.

1) people who hit hard times. We already have many programs to try to help this cadre of people since they're the only kind of homeless anyone seems willing to acknowledge. Absolutely there are better options for this class than sleeping in a public park; if anything we need to do a better job letting the public know about these shelters and missions.

2) people who can't fucking function in society on a permanent basis. Used to be we put these people in homes, but now it's seen to be cheaper to leave them to rot, and at best give them some tugboat to spend on scratchoffs and King Cobra

3) Assholes. If we did a better job with classes 1 and especially 2, you'd not just suspect that the guy bothering you for smokes was a douchebag who needed to shave, shower, and shtop begging

According to the CDC an astonishing 86% of the homeless are the moderately to severely mentally ill. The current homeless crisis is a direct consequence of dismantling the asylum system.

That's too bad. If they could make Austin the de facto homeless sanctuary / containment zone in Texas, it would likely reduce the homeless population in my part of Texas

It's just like communism; "It hasn't REALLY been implemented yet! This will be the first time and it will work because I'm in charge!"

Junkie scum btfo and it's about fucking time.
I was driving through Boston the other day and I saw a brand new brightly painted red sharps disposal container right out in the open. A part of me thought "good, non pos drug addicts are less likely to get an accidental needle stick", and yet another part of me thought "having this right out in the open like this seems like giving up".

It would just end in Austinites trying to flee to the good parts of the state. We must strap hipsters to their riverside efficiencies.

They need to just make Austin a quarantine zone. Have the government put up a wall overnight so that no one can get in or out except by plane. It'll be our own tiny East Berlin.

So they looked at what’s happening on the West Coast and decided they wanted to emulate that? Geniuses.

In Seattle, junkies rip sharps containers open and scatter the needles everywhere. And they do this despite Seattle having multiple needle dispensaries (not exchanges where the old needles have to be returned before junkies can get new ones).

Fucking stupid and delusional. I have not been to California but Seattle and Portland are already dystopian nightmares. At least many Texans have guns so you guys can protect yourself when random homeless people scream at you and try to attack you for no fucking reason.

I hope nothing happened to you. But yes it is amazing listening to the cries of the derelict all night.

What could go wrong?

Portland Police won't even drive by if the hobo is naked and shitting in your backyard, armed with a knife screaming death threats and throwing needles. They will ask you if you have "politely asked him to leave" first and give you a guilt trip about how he probably doesn't have anywhere else to go.

That sounds like a dope job. Salary plus benefits for literally doing nothing and refusing to do your job.

there should not even be a place to deposit used needles in the first place. Junkies have to go
