Atomic Heart is a upcoming combat RPG from Russian studio Mundfish. Set in a alternate 1950's where history diverged in 1936 with a discovery of a wonder material by a soviet scientist and the following hijinks of a IRL Stalinium making cold fusion reactors the size of a backpack real by 1939.

Development started in 2017, and the first few trailers and promotional images hit the internet in 2018. After 5 years of development it's scheduled to release on February 23rd.

Now it all looks very nice, that is undeniable. The art department has obviously pulled some real weight here, but a game is not made of graphics or art alone. The gameplay looks cool but only time will tell how it actually plays. I am myself cautiously optimistic about it, but as the Russians themselves say "Доверяй, но проверяй" "Trust, but verify." Originally it was scheduled 2019 release. Obviously this release didn't happen. The studio apparently had some issues with funding and the development of it but they pushed through, though rumors of layoffs and reshuffling were abound. Then on the end of 2022 new rumours surfaced that the studio underwent another layoff event and some crunch was happening. However both of these rumors mostly come from ResetERA so take it with a large amount of salt. Now the game is actually nearing completion.

This thread is for discussion of the game and what fellow Kiwis think of it. However it is also to act as a potential gathering any possible retardation and tomfoolery that might arise from it. In particular from one fact:

Devs are Russian

It is well known that non-western devs are constantly being put under scrutiny for ideological reasons. Diversity is our Strength™️ after all and there needs to be constant and ongoing reinforcement of The Message™️ at all times or else we will surely collapse back into the dark ages. Mundfish has caught some flak from games "journalists" over the fact that they are Russian and yet they seem to not be spending a large amount of their time of twitter signaling their virtue about the Current Thing™️! They haven`t even called out Putin for his invasion of Russia, no doubt because the game is being funded by Putin himself with blood money he has stolen from poor gay ukranian orphans whose trans parents he killed or something!

Jokes aside there are actually some questions about the funding of the game. Such a ambitious project is quite costly and the financials of Mundfish are not well known. The studio is actually based on Cyprus, which is a common thing Russian business will do to get better access to the global market. Cyprus has good tax laws, is a member of the EU and uses the Euro, has a nicer climate and even has some cultural ties as the island is majority Eastern Orthodox. Cyprus in return has taken advantage of this and offers plenty of services with russian language such as consulting, lawyer firms, resorts with russian speaking staff and such. [1][2][3]

As the game nears release, and when it does release, it is expected that some of the usual suspects might grumble about it. However so far not much sperging has been had on the issue, which is a pleasant surprise. I theorize that Hogwarts Legacy has actually come in clutch and is hogging the spotlight on the subject of videogames being used as a tool to virtue signal, as the combination of Troons (who are far more important that wh*te Ukrainians in the progressive stack) and J.K. Rowling/Harry Poter (Which these people have a much, MUCH stronger emotional attachment to than some new game) makes it a much more alluring target than the "Soviet Ballerina Robot Twin BioShock"

Speaking of which the ballerinas have become pretty much the official mascots of the game.

Fellas, I gotta be honest. I have seen loads of artwork of these ladies. Erotic illustrations. Porn, if you will. They have done some real guerrilla marketing for Atomic Heart and I salute them for it. There might be some """controversy""" over them in the future that might make for a good laugh. Or not, who knows.

Anyways let us see if the game turns out as good as the art. My first ever OP so it probably not very good but that happens.

I'm on the fence about this one. On one hand it's a first AA game from a foreign studio which is dicey on the other hand I actually like Eurojank and Slavejank and in addition to that it seems the game it's most compared to is Fallout 3 and I fucking love Fallout.

Plus Bethesda are being gigantic faggots and seemingly running the IP into the ground on purpose for some reason so maybe this will scratch that itch.

With every hyped big game in current year there are two big questions:
1. Is it actually full price length (10+ hours)? Or is it the art team doing their work to create a small area and the devs are left to fill it with content that can be speedrun in an hour?
2. Is the jank not bad enough to ruin the experience?

I thought it was because slavgames are usually buggy unplayable trash that is somehow the most enjoyable gaming experience of your life.
Yes, I do play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Pretty much my thoughts. Once I saw that gameplay reveal trailer, I instantly got onboard with it, but cautiously so. However, Eastern European devs have thus far managed to surprise me (like with STALKER or Metro) with their willingness to actually do Fallout/post-apocalyptic games well, so I hope this one is another home run.

With Eastern European devs, I'd say that 1. is probably going to be a "Full Price Length". They might make janky games, but I don't usually see them doing a lot of "Procedurally Generated Content!" bullshit, there tends to be a lot of genuine care and thought put into their games.
As far as 2., well...wait and see.

I dunno so much about Fallout 3 as some journalists who got to play an early release, compared it to more of a Soviet Bioshock.

I'm afraid it's gonna be Agony or Scorn all over again.
The only issue is that Agony and Scorn tried to play on their visuals and didn't show much demo gameplay, this game did show some demo gameplay and combat stuff. Whether you wanna believe the provided video of gameplay, that's your call.

Devs claim a minimum of 20 hours. Optimistically they mean that as a decent player doing only the main story and a little bit of the side content. Pessimistically it means 20 hours for a full completion. Either way it at least is better than some other single player games at the moment.

You are confusing the scrutiny from actual players with the one from journoscum.

I looked at some gameplay and Jesus Christ, it looks like a fucking mess.

Super spongy enemies, constant one liners... eugh, it just feels unpleasant.

The one liners do annoy me. I hope to set the voice acting to russian so at least I can't understand it and can ignore it.

Okay, so it looks like the game supports the idea of a stalker, and either you make headshots and kill the enemy with a single shot or you start an hour-long fight with sponges, which is fair enough. Git gud or die of boredom

I'd almost like the intense combat if it didn't seem like you get knocked down way too easily.
This might just be the games way of saying don't take on large groups of enemies, but the trailer only shows you fighting large groups of enemies.

Man scorn was such a disappointment. What was it, five years of dev time at least and we get a 3 hour puzzle game with light body horror elements? The fuck happened to the alien meat world that actually seemed promising?

Game looks pretty meh, but it's probably going to get really good sales purely because of NATO simps acting like lunatics about it and giving it a ton of free ads.
