Articles & Happenings is the third attempt at a news board on the Kiwi Farms. It is a cursed place. Every moderator who has been assigned here has resigned within a year. During 2016, the political crossfire was so bad it spread to different boards and culminated in me banning American news discussion entirely for several months. It has been deleted in its entirety twice. There is no actual discussion here, it's people posting garbage. It leans much further right than the rest of the site and doesn't particularly conduct discussion because dissenting opinions are dogpiled by a thousand memelords posting shit they read on /pol/ without any critical analysis.

The only rules that can be enforced are empirical ones with boolean violation answers. New threads must cite a real source directly and must use the headline of the article as a thread title without any editorializing. Articles must be archived in some way and must link to the original article. Replies that are one word or a reaction images are automatic one-month bans from the board.

I'm creating this now because it seems like this place is here to stay and is one of the largest areas of the entire site. I might as well throw in bare minimum effort to improve it. I don't even try to find mods for here because they will quit, without exception. I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.

I think headline cleanup and accuracy would do a lot of good, lest the OPs turn into a one man walking Vox machine. Removing 1 word replies did a lot for post quality and dissension from the popular norm of posting should not be discouraged. If it turns into Comrade Sickle Stalinismski getting into a verbal knife fight with Goosestep Von Hitler then let it, that shit is always entertaining and sometimes informative ( as long as it doesn't drag on for several pages... y'know... kinda like this thread). If someone comes into a thread about politics X bashing politics Y and they are from Y, hear them out. Unless it's a blantant shitpost meant to piss people off don't dogpile for differences of opinion, unless that is their fetish.

I've lurked here for awhile and the truth about this board is that I kind of have the same problem with it as any other news aggregator. At some point, I have this really weird feeling that I'm just reading a tabloid and I can almost feel the cheap paper in my hands. I think people dislike this board because it shows the truth that this website is really nothing special in the scheme of things. People just get to swear more or go after certain topics a bit more than other places.

Anyway, has anyone noticed that news aggregator sites are bringing comments sections back, but they seem really artitifical and follow a pattern of Two people agree --> One person disagrees --> Fake arguement?

Edit: Also lots of people admitting to being left-leaning in this thread. This is kind of like a sheep-in-wolf's-clothing sketch. Is the internet made up of nothing but pissed off edgy leftwingers? I mean, we all knew it always was, but maybe this is the proof.

Kind of? I think a newsfeed damages a person's brain in general. Either about current events or about a Lolcow. That constant flow of information seems to distract people really heavily. But come on, I'm not the first person to feel this way. People have been complaining about tabloids for decades now.

Sometimes people don't bother to discuss, some people do. You can't just limit someone's preference to what they want to do when they see the post.

Sadly that’s the nature of news today. It’s almost never to inform, it’s to blast out propaganda and enforce/reinforce narratives. It gets frustrating that even basic details that the public has the right to know gets obfuscated.

Its the job of news agencies and journos to write stuff like this though. I don't even think there's a bigger political narrative going on, I think its a bunch of assholes talking over each other. A&H seems a bit right-leaning, but its nowhere near as bad as stuff like /pol/. The trouble is discussion on the board is nonexistent. Nobody wants to engage with the news or, even worse, people who read the news.

If anything ratings discourage dogpiling. If you can rate a post "dumb" or "autistic" you're less likely to leave a negative reply. You want to have your cake and eat it too. If ratings are removed you'd have more people replying negatively to posts they disagree with, which you'd call dogpiling. If you leave ratings and have people spam "dumb" on you - that's discouraging critical thinking and responses.
