Articles & Happenings is the third attempt at a news board on the Kiwi Farms. It is a cursed place. Every moderator who has been assigned here has resigned within a year. During 2016, the political crossfire was so bad it spread to different boards and culminated in me banning American news discussion entirely for several months. It has been deleted in its entirety twice. There is no actual discussion here, it's people posting garbage. It leans much further right than the rest of the site and doesn't particularly conduct discussion because dissenting opinions are dogpiled by a thousand memelords posting shit they read on /pol/ without any critical analysis.

The only rules that can be enforced are empirical ones with boolean violation answers. New threads must cite a real source directly and must use the headline of the article as a thread title without any editorializing. Articles must be archived in some way and must link to the original article. Replies that are one word or a reaction images are automatic one-month bans from the board.

I'm creating this now because it seems like this place is here to stay and is one of the largest areas of the entire site. I might as well throw in bare minimum effort to improve it. I don't even try to find mods for here because they will quit, without exception. I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.

As someone who browses A&H and doesn't contribute much to conversations, I have to say that the filing down of ratings has had a positive impact on discussion. That's kinda sad, but its true. If ratings were entirely removed and staff enforced a policy of deleting posts made solely to say "i agree" or "i disagree", then A&H would be almost okay. More Florida Man and idiot criminal articles and less blogposts about politics would be great, too.

I am genuinely interested in examples of this occurring, and how often.

Also, ew, using the report system for anything other than spam and law-breaking.
 
Before Christchurch, I used to browse A&H. Whenever a major story like a terror attack or mass shooting happened, the comments were genuinely a good place to find information and updates. There was a good balance of opinion and good old fashioned kiwi autism & archival.

These days I still browse, but don't bother following the thread much due to the politisperg-ing. There doesn't seem to be the same quality of research either (not that every thread needs it).

I suppose I understand that the spergs need somewhere, and most of the internet is hostile to them. Personally, I think it's a shame that the balance has tipped away from what I used to enjoy about the board though. I just skim the odd article and move on because I find the commentary tedious and not informative to me.

But, hey, much as I think it's a shame, I just accept it's not what it was. So long as the rest of the site doesn't get derailed by people banging on monomanicaly about Jews/blacks/whatever, I can move on. Retards are gonna retard. Not everything on the site has to be "for me" and maybe what I used to like about it wasn't in "the spirit of the site" either.

We live in an age where information is everywhere, but nowhere to be found. Ironic that wider media censorship both fuelled the reason to come here, but also attracted those whose sperging is so loud that it pushes information into the background.

It's fucking hilarious that it's turned into a slap fight over stickers (of all things!) and that mods are having to deal with gay drama and fractionalism. Null's point that this is primarily a comedy website seems to have been lost on a handful of people. The meme of A&H used to be people redundantly posting that pedos=bad. I feel sorry for the mods having to deal with the new meme of gay slap fighting.

I'm for anything that might make this section of the site less autistic. Not sure if it's possible though. Everything about it seems symptomatic of the wider modern Internet.

If you really think about it, the only usage of :like::dislike::agree::disagree::feels: as stickers on A&N has made the style more minimalistic if you ask me. It brings a different style to a board like this, when you compare it to other threads. All you have to do is just select these four different stickers, and just be on your merrily way making fun of a lolcow.

yes should be changed to just an up arrow and down arrow so i am more comfy
