Well maybe not today due to the masses being tired and desensitized, but originally the idea of other worlds hosting life would have terrified the shit out of the people.
I mean, for centuries we've been told we are the only intelligent life to exist. Now? Aliens are flying overhead and showing us that we're a small raindrop in a giant unending ocean.
But nowadays all the alien TV shows/movies have made people more and more open to ayylmaos.
So really this giant gay op is failing because people don't give a shit anymore. If this had been done in a reality where alien media hadn't been created it would have terrified everyone.

Some rather well documented sightings are from shithole countries though and extend over decades even before the US becoming a nuclear supertech-empire.
The media and government agitation around the subject is suspicious though. It's plausible that there are aliens, it's rather implausible they would bother coming here, and it's even more implausible that they would lose craft and personnel to monke species 150 years into industrial revolution.

Generally we have little chance of negotiating on an even playing field with aliens who posses advanced space travel capabilities, and can observe and attack Earth from a distance that cannot be stopped by Humans. The nature of any relations would be in the alien's court, with us generally being unable to stop them. The sole exception is if they had a competency crisis or another situation that left them technologically inferior but with space ships they can operate but cannot understand, however that's unlikely.

I guess the question is what would they want with us?
Any resources like pure water or fatty acids - that they are somehow unable to easily access from other resources or synthesize themselves
A slave race - where building robots or drones compatible with their biospheres is considerably more difficult or unfeaseable
Research and analysis - like space zoologists cataloging all of the various species and ecosystems in the universe
Sex tourism - or other forms of experiencing human culture
Uplifting - alien liberals that chose to modify humans to match their expectations of the species
