The M1 looks pretty good but its gonna make Macs as closed down as iphones. Also I bet now qualcomm and others will get real with their PC designs. If nVidia enters the market it could be massive, the tiny tegra from 2017 on the switch can run Doom Eternal, they could easily make an ARM chip for PC that blows the M1 out of the water.

Also every Mac user I know was running Windows too because 3rd party software support is still shit on Mac, not an option anymore. I remember mac adoption really going up when they moved to intel and running windows became a possibility

Everything else is shit, the iPhone is shit, the iPad is now a schizo device thats neither a tablet nor a laptop, their accessories are overpriced as fuck, people only buy this for the brand status

My only regret is not buying apple stock in the early 2000s, tho I always been kinda broke so its more like "I wish I have had the money to buy apple stock"

I've gone to Windows 10 on my remaining Mac Mini because they just recently stopped supporting it and the newest MacOS available for it runs pig slow. Windows 10 OTOH is completely functional and still supports it. It is fucking sad when Microsoft supports your legacy products better than you do.

As much mad shit as I have talked about Microsoft, Windows 10 is pretty solid.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but there's a couple of PowerShell scripts floating around that disable a lot of the bullshit. It's OK when you turf stuff like Cortana and the account login nag screens, but I still prefer Linux as my daily driver.

Apple is killing off kernel extensions, replacing them with a defanged "system extensions" API.

Apple Updates Platform Security Guide, Says Kernel Extensions Won't Be Supported on Future Apple Silicon Macs
Yeah it's well past time to ditch Apple products. This is like the time they got rid of Steve Jobs and the company started floundering as soon as they ran out of big thunks from him. Except this time they can't just bring Jobs back along with all the projects he worked on during his time in the wilderness to save their asses.

This has been coming for a while. I'm not a regular Mac user anymore, but this is primarily a problem for the likes of Audio Hijack right? I don't think anyone's going to be hugely bothered that Dropbox is getting seperated from the ability to slow and crash your system without it being obvious in process monitoring utilities. VPN and security software seems to be catered for by the new infrastructure. I suppose it's not great if you have some old ass weird hardware device that needs a kext and won't ever get updated, but how big is that pool of people?

Apple moving to their own processors is great for laptops. The power, battery life, and cooling from the M chips is amazing. The mac mini is a good value again at $699. It will interesting if Microsoft gets serious about windows on ARM. Intel deserves to get bodied for how lazy they've been the last five years.

MacOS has run like shit on non SSDs since Yosemite was released. Apple should have ditched mechanical hard drives with the release of Yosemite. I'll give Microsoft credit. Windows 10 runs very well on older hardware.

If intel gets yeeted its going to be replaced by qualcomm which is the intel of ARM chips

Almost every phone out there uses snapdragon chips, the exception are a few samsung models and lowend chinese phones that use mediatek crap

M1 Macs haven't been out for that long and there's already malware for them

From blog.malwarebytes.com (archive)
Cyber security company Red Canary published findings last week about a new piece of Mac malware called Silver Sparrow. This malware is notable in being one of the first to include native code for Apple’s new M1 chips, but what is unknown about this malware is actually more interesting than what is known!

We know that the malware was installed via Apple installer packages (.pkg files) named update.pkg or updater.pkg. However, we do not know how these files were delivered to the user.

These .pkg files included JavaScript code, in such a way that the code would run at the very beginning, before the installation has really started. The user would then be asked if they want to allow a program to run “to determine if the software can be installed.”

This means that, if you were to click Continue, but then think better of it and quit the installer, it would be too late. You’d already be infected.

Correction on smartphones:
Nope, not anymore. Mediatek recently took the highest global marketshare off Qualcomm

Source for that? also most chinese phones used mtk so yeah I expect them to have that market cornered but its the lowend and the profit margins are razor thin

AMD should buy an ARM license and get on this shit immediately, it already lost the boat when they sold adreno to qualcomm instead of making their own ARM chips back then, but they can still get ahead of intel in this space

"“MediaTek’s strong market share gain in Q3 2020 happened due to three reasons – strong performance in the mid-end smartphone price segment ($100-$250) and emerging markets like LATAM and MEA, the US ban on Huawei and finally wins in leading OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor,” commented Counterpoint research director Dale Gai."

"MediaTek’s growth in regions such as India, Latin America, and China was one of the main factors which helped the firm become the biggest vendor of smartphone chipsets by market share."

Mediatek shows up here and there and I almost bought a Sony Xperia until I looked into what it used. Instead I bought a much cheaper and better phone because I'm not touching Mediatek.

Apple might start removing Rosetta 2 from M1 Macs in some regions on macOS 11.3
From macrumors.com (archive)
In the third beta of macOS 11.3 seeded to developers for testing today, MacRumors contributor Steve Moser uncovered new strings in the beta's code indicating that "Rosetta will be removed upon installing this update." Another new string reads "Rosetta is no longer available in this region. Applications requiring Rosetta will no longer run."

Apple did not specify which regions where Rosetta 2 would be "no longer available," and no further details are known at this time.

Here are my Macs:
View attachment 1007046

Current machine (not pictured) is:

Computer: Mac Pro
Model: MacPro5,1 (Mid 2010) - same case as the G5
OS Version: 10.11.6*
Processors: 2x 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Processor Core Number: 12
RAM: 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7950 (upgraded from stock ATi Radeon 5770)
GPU VRAM: 3072 MB
27" Cinema Display

Notes:
The iMacs were the wife's/kids.
In the 7300, I installed an internal SCSI SyQuest EZ-Drive (it was better, but less popular, than ZipDrives).
Later upgraded the stock 200 MHz PowerPC 604e processor to a 400MHz G3.
I skipped the blue G3 Yikes machines (used one at work)
The G4 was a Sawtooth (2x AGP) with SCSI drives.
I upgraded to my current machine primarily because Blizzard dropped PowerPC support for WoW.
The last 2 machines were refurbs from Apple, so not full price.

ALL of these machines still boot and run fine - except the //c (bad power supply).

* Currently running El Cap as my main OS, no desire to go any further... but I do have partitions to boot into:
Snow Leopard
Lion
Sierra
Various VMs for Windows.

Used to be an early adopter of all Mac OS versions (including the Mac OS X beta), but all recent OS updates are getting shittier and shittier.
Skipped Mtn Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, and anything after Sierra.

I've never owned an iOS device or an iPhone.

Bring on the "OK Boomer Macfag" posts.

ps: Never bought Applecare, never lost any data or had to reformat/reinstall, never had any hardware failures - except for the optical drive in the G5 iMac so I replaced it, never installed any kind of AV.
we get it, you like penis

That sucks. Maybe legal issues in some countries. Luckily it doesn’t affect the US.

The iMac Pro has been discontinued and there will not be another.
This would be pretty typical Apple behavior, break some shit on purpose and not even warn you in advance. Fuck these assholes. Fuck that gay cocksucker Tim Cook and all the underage boy anuses he's jizzed in. He is no Steve Jobs.

Ah Apple back in the day you made great looking products and innovated with the popularization of the mouse and graphical user interface. Which inspired Microsoft Windows and surpassed in sales due to the popularity of pc clones and being more usable than MacOS. I can go on with the stuff they pioneered in but all that stuff resulted in a cult of personality that makes it fun to mack their overpriced premium shit. But that is now after Steve Jobs died. Funny how when he left for a decade Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy due to mismanagement. Athough Apple isn't on the verge now due to its dominance in the cellphone markets there homecomputers only attract Apple fanboys or those who are on the niche and need software you can only get on MacOs such as Garageband.
There is a channel called 65scribe the dude reviews old apple computers with dad jokes its a good channel.

The most cynical interpretation would be that we aren't hearing the full picture, that they're trying to force people in regions like China to pirate less by restricting the use of regular applications vs. those downloaded from the Mac app store (for SECURITY (TM)), and that the Rosetta restriction is only part of that.
