Discussion thread for Ape Escape series in general and specifically Ape Escape 2 the greatest game of the PlayStation 2 era, perhaps of all time.

Would you pay full price for a remake of the series or the 4th game? I would, if Sony gets their shit together.

Big fan of the first one. Never played the sequels, but I hated the PSP remake with its single analog stick and shitty new voice overs. Also, no mention of Snake vs. Monkey?

Edit: Where's the poll option for "All of the above; shut up and take my money?"

you should check out 2 and 3 if you like the first one but yeah dumb idea to remake the first for the psp of all things

i remember having a demo disk of ape escape 1 and being totally unable to figure out how you moved or did anything. my controller didnt have any analog sticks.

got the full game (and a full controller) a few months later for christmas, it fuckin ruled. I still remember the soundtrack

I love Ape Escape 1 and 3 but 2 left me cold as it was essentially a remake of the first game, it's the only one I haven't replayed since it first came out.

I actually just replayed the original Ape Escape two years ago, still holds up as fun.

I do wish we had gotten an Ape Escape for the PS4.

First one was much better than all the other ones. Both mechanics and story-wise imho.

And like previously mentioned... With all these remakes they keep pumping out, why not remake one of the greatest PS1 games? Would definitely hold up to todays standards I feel - with some polish of course.

The third game is imo the best, but I can respect thinking the original is.

The third game was at least so much better than 2 and I remember it coming as a pleasant surprise that there was even going to be a third game, wasn't somehting I was expecting.

While it would have been interesting to see what a fourth game could have been like at least the series ended on a high note, which more series probably should have quit while they were ahead.

Ape escape was made during a time when the controls for 3d platformers were not standard.

holding a shoulder button to jump is not considered kosher today. Astrobot Rescue Mission and Astro's Playroom already play like a more modern version of Ape Escape. However Team Asobi now has the rights to all the old Japan Studio IPs, so they're not dead.

It’s available for download on the PSN for $9 but it def deserves a remaster with all of Sony’s current gaps in IP that are PS exclusive

I have the digital version of this game & they decided to give us AMERICANS the European version with funny lil accents & Japanese names. That's funny because the achievements use the localized names. I like the addition of the color monkey bosses in this too. Sucks we will never get the N.Sane & Regnited treatment for Ape Escape.
That because Ubisoft published 2 in America so Sony likely didn't have the rights to use that version however sad they didn't go back and make it true 60hz

I only played Ape Escape 1, but it's easily one of the best and most unique 3D platformers. The humans had weird designs, didn't care for that much...and that's basically the only criticism I have for it.

Tried Ape Escape 2 on a PS2 emulator many years ago and it just wasn't the same. Ape Escape 1 is one of my top 5 of all time, if not THE top of all time in my books. It was such a perfect foundation to make a game on and they rocked the art style given the PS1's perspective projection graphics (that's the weird and wobbly pixel style display you see on the PS1). The premise was so straight forward and simple and yet they managed to provide environments and tools that were never repetitive despite the goals in the game being the same throughout. It seemed that every level had not just one or two gimmicks, but it felt like a dozen. And all of the minigames and easter eggs, holy. Each ape has its own bio, there are hidden ones on every level... probably the first game I 100%'d. I haven't replayed it for about 12 years now but I want to. What's the goto PS1/PS2 emu these days? I'll try the sequels while I'm at it.

Holy shit I genuinely thought and anticipated that this thread was doomed to Spergatory, because no one was gonna remember this classic PS2 era game. Oh man, how have I misjudged humanity?
The perfect catch animation skewed my judgement of video games for years, I remember being 10 and disappointed with the laziness of Kingdom Hearts & Final Fantasy X at first before they grew on me, because of the detail put into this trippy and musical title.
