In before ban.
Alright! My weeklong ban for talking about Stargate is over. That means STARGATE IS BACK ON THE MENU!!
So SG-1 season 10. They finally did a proper episode for Claudia Black; an episode which was fine. Character development and some new mcguffin that will be referenced in a later episode. This is a pattern that annoys me. The whole episode is just to introduce this or that so that a future, better episode can reference it. Except it is starting to become too noticeable. After this we are treated to a nice episode of Atlantis where the Wraith finally get some much-needed development. Blah blah blah you can read more about these two in the actual Stargate thread.
Okay, so keeping with Stargate Atlantis we get a Rodney McKay episode. Even better, this one has his sister who we have only heard about. She is also a super genius but she is normal and had kids. Cool. Apparently she has a grand idea and decides to solve physics with finger paints and model trains. Okay... sure. The interplay between her and Rodney is neat and she gets called in to help Atlantis get more energy. Except they accidentally fuck up another universe and alternate-Rodney (Rod) shows up to fix things. This is compelling stuff. I like it. Rod is just Rodney, but way cooler and has a leather jacket. Anyway they solve the problem but kill their power source in the process.
At this point I feel like we have a loose end. The episode just stops. No power. Bad situation. But let's pretend everything is okay? Usually by this point Adolf Wier would be throwing Furlings into the furnaces to keep Atlantis running. But I guess not this time. We will see how this develops, but I sort of expected Rod to send them a ZPM power thingy somehow, since he mentioned they had a bunch of them.
Whatever. Onto SG-1. The Lucien Alliance shows up and attacks one of the big space ships that Earth has. They kill the cool captain dude (bummer) and then we get some neat callbacks to some really old episodes, one thing that Stargate does very well. The day is saved and everyone cheers.
The Lucien Alliance pisses me of though. These guys just show up. Suddenly they have all this tech and all this support and run heroin corn all over the galaxy and are a threat. What?? This all feels way WAY too forced and these guys are starting to annoy me even more than the Genii from Atlantis.
I don't get why we needed another bad guy with the Ori arc going strong. But another issue with Stargate that has become more apparent with time is that the writers are intentionally stretching plots out and slow walking all of it. Pretty bold move considering their show wasn't doing the best in the ratings anymore. And all of thos creates a feedback loop that ends with their shows getting canceled before they can finish the story.
The shows are still good, though the idiot squad on Atlantis are so dumb. So very dumb. But the issues are getting hard to ignore. If the Ori are such a big threat, shouldn't there be some Ori stuff in each episode? Now does not seem to be the time to bring in another bad guy and a lame one at that.
Makes me glad we are kicking the Canadians around nowadays. Fucking Canadians.
