I wanna watch some spooky movies throughout October, post any that you think are good.

I would recommend Mad God, it was pretty disgusting and cool.

Here's a few different types of horror:

"Noroi - The curse" was recently recommended to me by a fellow kiwi, and if you liked the japanese OG version of "The Ring" and a slow burn, you'll like that.

"The Orphan" and its sequel are fun horror, more thriller slasher-y.

Speaking of slashers - "X" is a recent slasher film that captures the spirit of the original old "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" quite well.

"The Black Phone" starring Ethan Hawke was...."fine". Not great, but not a waste of time. It's just very noticeable that this is a short story you could read in 10 minutes, adapted to a 90 minute film. It feels like something Stephen King could have doodled on a Napkin in the 90s.

"The Lodge" is fun if you like isolation paranoia family drama.

If you enjoyed the horror films of the 80s and 90s with a solid helping of satanic panic, I can whole heartedly recommend "The House of the Devil"

If you enjoy stalkers and found footage "Creep" is an impressive film that has no business being as decent as it is considering its tight budget and tiny crew.

I always enjoy good hauntings/curses and "The Dark and the Wicked" does it really well and is set on a nice rural farmstead where no one can hear the protagonists scream.

If you just prefer your hauntings more urban and jewish, "The Vigil" is adequate enough.

Should you prefer the more investigative horror films, where the protagonists are "chasing" the mystery, both "Creepy" and "Ju-On: Origins" (a six part miniseries) are solid.

Ima watch this thread, I need tons of films for this month.

Kwaidan is one I watch every Halloween. It's an anthology film based on a collection of stories written by a guy living in Japan around the 1910 era. The stories are really good and the sets for several locations are gorgeous.

Satan's Little Helper is another one worth seeking out. Mix of spooky and comedy that works pretty well, I don't think many people have seen it though unfortunately.

I don't get scared by movies very much but I really like the dark moods for Halloween.
Fun unique take on scary movies.

Both the Japanese and US release of Dark Water have lingered in my mind ever since I saw them.
Maybe they're not 12 angry men quality but I have a fondness for them.

Battle Royale, always fun.

First i wanna say check out effedupmovies.com to stream some of the hardest to find horror/extreme horror films around. Also they host just other great, depressing movies as well. Lot of gore flicks and pornogore fetish type shit if youre into that also, and just plain old obscure shit. Its my fave streaming site.

Heres a list of 10 films tho (not necessarily found on that site, tho a couple can be). Not in any particular order.
1. Mandy

2. Bone Tomahawk - check out the other 2 movies by S. Craig Zahler while youre at it. (Brawl in cell block 99, Dragged across concrete) great style with this guy.

3. The House That Jack Built - can be found on effedupmovies.com. lars von trier, great movie, dark as shit. We all know this director. 035b41ea7d6ed86d3e21c82830f66633.jpg
4. Censor - i fuckin love this movie, what can i say. Its on hulu pretty sure.

5. Color Out of Space - based on the lovecraft story, one of the best lovecraft/cosmic horror films ever made imo. Def the best lovecraft adaptation imo. The monster is fucking incredible in this. And nicholas cage is great in it, made me laugh even a few times.

6. The Blackcoats Daughter - much more slow burn of a film, heavy on atmosphere. And plus kiernan shipkas cute ass is in it. I like it alot.

7. The Void - cosmic horror film, tied up there with #5 COoS, although it is not a direct adaptation, which might make it even better if youre a stickler for lovecraft. Great monster design, great ending, great practical and visual effects imo. Just a really good movie that not many people have seen.

8. The Wailing - i forgot what else this guy has directed, but this movie is incredible. Longer movie, with alot going on that you will miss the first time, so watch an explanation on youtube afterward to glean even more and be even more impressed by it. Even so, this movie is great and full of depth on first watch.

9. Pyewacket - another underrated and not very well known film, one of my personal faves. One of the better seance type movies. Watch an explanation for this one too to make sure you caught what actually happens, its pretty intricate in plot, but you can just watch it for the ghost/horror aspect and still really enjoy it imo. The other movie by this director is also great but more thriller, called backcountry. Man vs nature movie that one is.

10. Saint Maud - i guess i saved the best for laat accidentally lol. This one is prolly my personal favorite from the list, mostly bc the religious/mental illnes theme. I fuckin love this movie so goddamn much. One of the best endings ever, and Maud is such a damn good character.

Hope there was at least one movie that is new to everybody. Not exactly the most obscure films ever, but thats why i plugged effedupmovies as well lol. Youll have to do your own browsing on there tho, theres so many fuckin movies on that site im tellin you.

Ju-On

The original Japanese film which inspired the American "The Grudge". Typical ghost haunting house movie. Unlike the American movie, the Japanese movie is more psychological. Classic horror.

Fun fact: this movie is the reason why I tuck myself in bed and had to sleep with the lights on for years as a teen.
