So my question is, how did vaccination get such an unwarranted reputation if the risks imposed are truly so small? Exaggeration?
iirc the story goes like this
Back in the day, New Vaccine was coming to evaluation stage. New Vaccine was several already existing vaccines combined in a newer, more-profitable form. In order to hype why everybody needed New Vaccine the company behind it hyped up a study that claimed the risk of autism went down with the fewer injections you had with one New Vaccine compared to several already existing vaccines, the idea being that getting stuck with needles caused it. Eventually this was thrown out as it was no longer profitable to pursue that angle.
This then was the hook used by other parties for "THE STUDY THEY DONT WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT" and so forth to take the money of idiots who wanted to blame something for autism.

I saw on imgur today a picture of a baby posted by the mother. The baby was covered in these terrible sores. The baby caught chicken pox because it was too young to be vaccinated against it.

Ah, thank you. Now it makes much more sense.

This is so motha' fuckin' relevant, it hurts so damn much (yet it feels so good!). And I agree wholeheartedly with these two of how awful this shit is, too!

The tragic part is that some people will actually take that movie seriously, rather than seeing it for what it is: the sob story of a discredited hoaxster whose bullshit was uncovered and debunked.

Wakefield's ruse was taken apart years ago and now he's reappeared once again to cry about science spanking him. The guy is a quack. :sighduck:

I think the core of the Anti-Vax movement consists of parents looking for something else to blame that's not themselves.
Research data seems to support that the chances of autism increase when having children at an older age, or because of genetics. Having kids after a point can be prevented, and genetics passes the blame to their own body and their ancestors. Some people just can't deal with the fact that they're broken on some level, so they shift the blame to something else.

Or they're just greedy and want some of that pharmaceutical money from a class action lawsuit.

Won't happen. Ever.

When the pharmaceutical companies were tasked with the job of deploying these vaccines they were given near-absolute immunity from suit for anything that happened as a result. All vaccine-related lawsuits are directed to a special one purpose vaccine court (Office of Special Masters of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims), and its job is to tell you to go fuck yourself.

Paranoia, tinfoil hat theories, misinformation, and retarded agendas are all pandemic viruses themselves, literally no different from real viruses, and there are no effective vaccines to fight them all.
Part of it is this too: in a countries like the USA where everyone is vaccinated against everything that causes trouble, no one has the ability to watch infectious diseases spread in front of their eyes; therefore, they mistakenly conclude that there is no need for vaccines.

Ironically, better vaccination means less autism in the long term; it is seeming more and more like the cause of autism and related mental conditions is early-life viral infections and autoimmune responses to them.

I get the feeling that a lot of these anti-vaxxer tards will be begging for a vaccine when they start popping out pinhead Zika babies. Alas for them, Zika is a virus with a low genetic fidelity, so it will take many years to make a human vaccine, assuming its possible at all.

No, they'll probably switch track and claim that vaccines cause Zika because they're made with aborted foetuses and it's not nice to fool Mother Nature or something like that. But, if you swallow these all natural herbal detox pills twice a day (cost: £79.50 for a bottle of twenty), you'll not have to worry about Zika ever again!

Double posting, so sue me.

Here's an anti-vaxx circle jerk I found on Facebook.

Some observations:

1. It's spelt "thiomersal."

2. The LD50 of thiomersal is 75 milligrams. 1 microgram is so far below the LD50 it's practically not there (or should I say homeopathic?)

3. Wilfully refusing to have your children vaccinated for no valid medical reason is, in fact, child abuse, and also is damaging to public health.

4. Nice Gish Gallop.

5. You forgot to put "And then everyone else in the supermarket applauded!" at the end.

"Thorough homeopathic checks." What the fuck is that?

I used to work in a children's hospital and I dreaded the anti-vax homeopathy crowd - you just couldn't reason with them. I wanted to grab them and scream, "The reason your child is not improving is because you keep ignoring us and feeding him fucking magic beans!" I honestly believe that refusal to vaccinate should be treated as child neglect and punished accordingly. If you want to treat your own sickness by waving flowers at it, then be my guest. But if you're going to put your child and other children in danger because of your wrong beliefs, then fuck you, you shouldn't have kids.

There is little I despise more than anti-vax scum. I don't even care if they have good motivations. At some point, stupidity reaches the level of evil.

My friend's son had leukemia. She put a pic of him on her Facebook page with a sweet message thanking people for getting vaccinated to protect the immunocompromised. She made it public as friends asked her to so that it was shareable. After about a week she had thousands of messages from anti-vaxxers saying things like"I'm not risking my kid getting autism for your kid" and "Not all kids were meant to live." That is pretty much anti-vaxxers in a nutshell.

Forgot the most important part of this story which is that he is in remission and doing well!

They want their fictitious bullshit foisted on the world, science be damned.

They did get one thing right though--not all kids are meant to be. Anti-vaxxers should not be allowed to have children if intend to abuse them as they've sworn to. Any children that they do have already should be attended to and placed into the custody of people who actually will care about their well being.

"I'm not risking my kid GETTING Autism"

If your kid has Autism, your kid was born with it. That's YOUR work. Autism is not catchable. Really, even if it was, is it as bad as the diseases?

"Not all kids were meant to live"
That's disgusting. I wish they treated these things like they do if you purposely give someone AIDS. If they do it on purpose, it's a crime. Not all people should be parents but apparently they are.

I would posit that many anti-vaxxers are the result of a slipped condom and a broken household.

The FB group "Things Anti vaxxers Say" had a go at the assholes posting all over his picture, and it got pretty spectacular.
