Plenty of people get sober while taking prescribed medication for conditions that warrant it. As it says the 12 Step literature, we are not doctors. Yes there are plenty of shady docs who will play Dr. Feelgood for an addict and there are lots of addicts who pretend to be sober while getting a secret fix. But there are also many people who stay within the guardrails they need to stay free from addiction while treating what needs to be treated. For example, lots of alcoholics who suffer panic attacks have an emergency script for eg Klonopin that they only take as-needed and can make a single bottle of 30 .5mg tabs last years. Meanwhile others who got fucked up on benzos just can’t touch them. Everyone is different.
TL;DR It’s not up to us to define someone else’s sobriety, especially in a situation like this where we have only gossip to go on. Unfortunately, it takes becoming a vegetable for some addicts to get and stay clean.
