For as much shit that came before the Sue Lightning incident, Anthony still could of avoided his modern day status had he not freaked out over the incident.
This was the saga that ultimately sealed his fate.
Here's some history on that. On March 2nd 2016, Anthony's former girlfriend Melissa Stetten revealed on her podcast "Like Super Duper Famous" that she had discovered evidence that suggested Anthony had a sexual relationship with transsexual porn star Sue Lightning and that it appeared that Anthony paid for breast implants for Sue.

Acting on Stetten's tip, further investigation took place and turned up more proof of the claim's validity.
Such as a photo of Anthony and a photo of Sue Lightning that were each clearly taken in the same hotel bathroom.
Tweets that would quickly be deleted when questions began being asked.
A comment from Sue on one of Anthony's Instagram posts about his Jaguar.
A picture of Sue in Anthony's house holding one of his guns alongside a screen shot from a video of Anthony's cat Beavis for comparison.
It would also later be found out that Anthony was friends with Sue on Venmo, a mobile payment service between sender and receiver.
Word got to the Opie & Anthony subreddit that
Sue was fine with the jokes the subreddit was making about the situation and would go on to
do an AMA there answering questions.
Anthony would first address all this in a private DM to someone on Twitter who tweeted him the evidence.
Then he made his way to the Opie & Anthony subreddit where he repeated the same basic defense but with more anger and threats of getting the subreddit shut down for discussing this.
He would eventually talk about it on his "show" desperately trying to deflect.
When attempts to deflect wouldn't work,
Anthony went on his show and threatened to dox people who were discussing Sue and his relationship. He said he would show people's reddit posts to their bosses and put up pictures of their families on his show. As a tease, he mentioned that he knew one of the people worked at Panera Bread. Doing this did not stop the discussion of Sue Lightning but did start talk about where Anthony was getting information as some wondered if he was desperate enough to dox subscribers of his own podcast network with their payment info.
After the this, Anthony would change course from making threats to outright denial during his appearance on Alex Jones' InfoWars.
When guests would bring up that they had seen people using the nicknames 'Tranthony" & "Tranpa" to refer to Ant, he would claim that was because he was friends with transsexual porn star Bailey Jay, who attended his July 4th 2014 party, in a purposeful bit of misinformation. He stopped referencing Sue by name and if brought up would simply call her "the trans".
However, this would not stop people from noticing Anthony interactions with transsexuals such as this clip from "The Chip Chipperson Podacast".

Anthony couldn't even livestream anymore without being confronted about Sue.
Anthony's right hand man, Keith Maresca, would confirm Sue and Anthony's time together suggesting they might have "dabbled", in a private communication between himself and admins on the Opie & Anthony subreddit that would later be made public.
Eventually, Anthony would go back to saying that he knows Sue and again claims they're friends but still would not directly admit anything sexual took place.
