A tsunami has hit the Indonesian cities of Palu and Donggala following a number of earthquakes off the coast of Sulawesi.

Reuters is reporting it was as high as two metres.

Hary Tirto Djatmiko, a spokesman for Indonesia's geophysics agency, confirmed a tsunami had occurred but the agency was still collecting information about the incident.

Videos circulating on social media show a powerful wave hitting the provincial capital, Palu, with people screaming and running in fear.

Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said houses were swept away and families were reported missing.

He said communications with central Sulawesi were down and the search and rescue effort was being hampered by darkness.

The wave followed a magnitude-7.5 earthquake, which came hours after a milder quake hit the same area, killing one person and injuring at least 10, and officials expect further damage.

The tsunami warning was lifted within the hour, but residents were warned to stay alert as a number of moderate aftershocks hit the area.

"We advise people to remain in safe area, stay away from damaged buildings," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said in a televised interview.

Television footage from the quake showed people running into the streets, and an official with the local disaster agency, Akris, said "many houses" had collapsed.

"It happened while we still have difficulties in collecting data from nine villages affected by the first quake," he said.

Just short of 14 years since the Boxing day one, damn. I remember remember flipping though the channels on TV when news broke about the Boxing Day tsunami.

The Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia says the only Filipino in the quake-struck area is safe


The 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit just off Central Sulawesi at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers at around 7 pm local time on Friday, September 28, said the US Geological Survey.


Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong Wee said that the earthquake and tsunami struck the provincial capital city of Palu and the neighboring city of Donggala.

Wee added that the only Filipino in the area – a detainee serving his sentence at the Lapas Penitentiary – is safe.

The Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Agency put the official death toll so far at 384, all of them in the tsunami-struck Palu. It also warned that the death toll was likely to rise. – Michael Bueza, with reports from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
