I've been living under a rock lately, but is the original English dub on the upcoming BD release of Eva really locked behind the $220 collector's edition?
Yup. Limited edition only. I don't know if that includes the Funimation movie dubs. Maybe not since I've seen those movies sell for high prices on ebay. If you want the original dub, you can get it off archive.org or nyaa.

You know, the talk earlier about how modern American works have to always be "ironic" and devoid of sincerity is the reason I think two of the only Western live-action adaptations of an anime have actually worked are that of Speed Racer and Alita Battle Angel. Mainly because they go all-in on the ridiculousness of their settings and fully embrace it with open arms.

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, but it did say Manga, hell feel free to PM me to prevent shitting the thread up, but does anyone know of some good places to read manga? A friend and I are looking for a place to read more up to date stuff, since well mangadex is more of the older translation stuff.

If anyone does want a good old finished manga, Pet Shop of Horrors is a goodie. It does start out as kind of creepy due to the earlier chapters, but then it kinda turns a little less about the pets and focus more on Leon Orcot the cop, his brother Chris, and Count D. Ngl, it's actually really good and I wish somebody would bring it back from the dead since there was only 4 episodes ever made of the anime. It was REALLY enjoyable actually.
I remember that! Saw it on some bootleg dvd ova comp back in the day, it really was something...

Technically you can also add Edge of Tomorrow. It's not an adaptation, but it's based on a manga, & Tom Cruise only rarely, once in a while, makes something that isn't kino. Yes, I'm a fanboy, IDGAF about the Scientology shit. I just enjoy his movies, except 2 of them.

I think it kinda helps that Speed Racer, Alita, and Edge of Tomorrow (mentioned by a user below) aren’t exactly well-known and widely loved properties. That allows both the creators and the audience to go in with a more objective mindset.

Speed Racer's an incredibly well-known property. You mention anime to people, it'll be one of the first that comes to mind.

Maybe we’re just from different generations, because for me the “anime literally everyone knows” would either be Naruto or Pokémon, just because that’s what always used to play on TV back in the day. Speed Racer just isn’t something I ever see brought up.

Well, yeah, if you were a kid in the early 00s. But if you're older you probably know Speed Racer, is the thing. It reran a lot, it's been parodied on cartoons...

That's a really awesome movie as well. Come to think about it, like Speed Racer and Alita, it too wasn't exactly full of sarcastic quips and the like.

Heck, I think that's one of the reasons anime is so enjoyable, and why those three movies managed to capture the feeling of the medium much better than the rest.

Animation Studio GONZO and Funimation Team Up To Remaster Mid-2000s Anime And Upload To YouTube

If you were an anime fan in the early to mid 2000s, GONZO was an animation studio you were familiar with, as much of their slate of shows was prime license fodder for home video. Funimation was the most prolific licensor of their slate and to celebrate that connection between both companies, both have decided to team up to remaster selected titles in HD to upload to their respective YouTube channels for a limited time. All three series are described below:

RAGNAROK - THE ANIMATION (26 episodes)
A great evil sweeps across the realm, and the young swordsman Roan, along with his life-long companion Yufa, must face it head on! As the two friends travel toward their destiny, they are joined by an ever-growing cast of heroes. The path they travel is rife with monsters, magic, and danger, but where there’s a will—there’s a way! Lessons lurk in the darkness, and the journey starts now!

Burst Angel (24 episodes)
The future's looking bleak. It’s a good thing there’s a new sheriff in town. Her name is Jo, and she’s an enigma even to herself. Alongside her partners Sei, Amy, and Meg, Jo fights for the citizens who can’t defend themselves. Confronting corruption and twisted science, these gals are on fire—and they’re the best chance the wounded city’s got.

Witchblade (24 episodes)
Masane Amaha exists on society’s fringe, with no memory and no direction. Upon her arrival back in Tokyo, her fate is altered forever when she unites with the Witchblade—an ancient weapon of ecstasy, power, and pain that penetrates the body and soul. Conscripted into the service of the Doji Group and hunted down by the NSWF, Masane’s greatest battle will be for her very soul.

Funimation's uploads will be available in the USA, Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, India, Philippines, Singapore while Gonzo's uploads will be available outside Japan in select regions without subtitles. Episodes will be uploaded weekly in three episode blocks.

Don’t forget Astroboy. Not sure how many feel for that CGI movie though.
Personally I didn't mind it, but I'm not all that familiar with Astro Boy to begin with, and I've only heard nothing but negative things about it from fans. It honestly kinda sucks that Astro Boy bombed because Imagi Animation Studios had so much potential going for it (I liked the TMNT movie, for instance), and they actually had a Gatchaman and Legend of Zelda movie planned.

Allow me to sell you Dr. Slump with two simple pages (albeit from different chapters). This is the fastest a gag manga has gotten me into hysterics from the first page alone!

Just goes to show that Mr. Toriyama is indeed a wild card.

What are the most unfairly rated/dismissed anime for you? For me it's Ranpo Kitan - it gets 6.6 on MAL, but I give it 8 and Seiji Kishi is one of the best directors active in the industry.
Remember enjoying that series, especially the mini arc with the poor detective and his sister which the final episode for was pretty haunting coupled with the ending playing during the last part. It wasn't a masterpiece but it had some interesting ideas with its visual style and having a batshit insane MC.

There's honestly a lot of shows I find get unfairly dismissed, but more recently I'd say RobiHachi (6.5 on MAL) got labelled as a fujobait show, which didn't help since it being mecha already made people steer clear, that made a lot of people not bother. Series just had two bros traveling from one planet to the next all while being chased by the debt collector Yang.

Everyday I'm more and more glad I clung on to my old eva dvd collection so I don't have to shell out a bunch for something full of tat and shit I don't want. I have the same problem with the rightstuf SEED release where I only want the original dub, yet it's locked behind the collector's edition full of stuff I don't want. Very glad I also own the old dvd collection for that one.
