Fuck Crunchyroll I only watch shitty anime that ISN'T mainstream. You ever seen Di Gi Charat Nyo? Fucking boring and nobody realizes it exists. I'm 26 episodes in so far and still going lmao. I love the ED but where the fuck is the blue guy?

Oh speaking of series everybody forgot about I read Gash/Zatch/Konjiki/whatever Bell recently and was not prepared for how good it was. I had a vague memory the titty song and felt like reading a bit of a 00s shonen series but I ended up powering through the whole thing. I felt genuine emotions and shit over a power battle series. Also this guy was part of it.

The anime is so slow I can't recommend it over the manga but the songs are obviously better when you can actually her them.

BTW, guys, what's your take on RETRO CRUSH? It hosts several old anime for free on their YouTube channel. That's how I discovered Iria: Zeiram the Animation. Really cool, I'm yet to watch the movies, which it serves as a prequel to.
They're pretty good. It's a part of the Digital Media Rights company which also has a live action Asian cinema channel (AsianCrush) and a b-movie/cult/exploitation channel (Midnight Pulp) as well. The people running their social media can be annoying at times, but then again who isn't. Retro Crush gets a lot of Discotek Media releases, but there's a paywall or they require you to sign up for some titles. Iria is great, btw.

Another anime that surprised me this year was X the TV series from the early 2000s. I love the opening to that anime. Something about Kamui never being able to reach the Other Kamui resonates with me. He doesn't even go into motion, just moves farther and farther.

FOR THE PERFECT DREAAAAAAAM

I was honestly surprised to learn that women created the concept, story, the manga it is based of. It's so pro-male, in a way.

Unrelated from the autistic shitflinging about Chinese cartoons, apparently there was a live reading of Digimon Tamers in which they have a MGS2 like conversation about political correctness and cancel culture. I'm not making this shit up.

Here's a link to the wordpress article which has the nyaa link.
And I'll put some screencaps in here.

For sure you're trolling, but X's OP is pretty good even though the anime just comes to a screeching halt because CLAMP and their editor are at a permanent stand-off over it. It's thankfully more comprehensible than the movie, even though the movie has incredible animation, but I don't really see myself ever watching it again.

I'm glad Retro Crush is actually legal and has a good selection, but once a pirate, always a pirate. (Mainly because I only have the app on my phone and I just have a shitty connection, so I make do with downloading when I can.)

EDIT: got ninjaed lmao, i think i took too long typing this up

So... since people were talking about Digimon, I figured this would be relevant. DigiFes 2021 happened 2 days ago (August 1st), and some of the Japanese voice actors from the Digimon Tamers series did a live reading of a script titled "Digimon Tamers 2021," a sequel to an audio drama CD titled "Digimon Tamers 2018: Days -Information and the Unordinary-" which is in itself a sequel to the Digimon Tamers series.

The script apparently hurt a lot of people's feelings or whatever, for committing the horrendous crime of... talking about censorship and cancel culture as a part of its plot. Oh no!
also it ends on a cliffhanger just like the 2018 audio drama lmao

I really enjoyed the anime and I'm glad I started with it and not the earlier film adaptation, which is borderline experimental. More than 24 Characters for a single film... insane.

I pirate, because I'm a poorfuck :-(

The advent of high-speed internet and instantly-available torrents drastically drops the opportunity costs of following a currently-airing series. I can download an episode at essentially no cost, flip through an episode in a few minutes to see what happened while still being able to read most of the dialogue because hardsubs, and slow down and pay more attention if it looks like something interesting is happening. So I'll usually take a look at the first episode of most shows on the list (some can be filtered out just based on description), cross off a bunch where I'm not interested in the premise/art style, fully watch the ones I'm seriously interested in, but also keep tabs on more marginal series because it's just a few minutes a week per series, so why not do it while I'm eating lunch or something?

I like having legal options to watch shows because it does so much to make people aware of these things, but there's still so much stuff that hasn't been brought here yet... so what other option is there?

Golden Boy has the best comedic timing I think I've ever seen, animated or not.

Probably the only reason it isn't meme'd around more is because it's own personality overwhelms whatever it's being reused for.
I can see Kintaro's toilet obsession and butt/potty humor being something that could be memed, though it would be kinda hard to find the instance to make that sort of meme.

I like watching shit start off and like to keep up with stuff for years, its not as fun when you can binge everything in a couple of days and not spend time really thinking about it.

God I fucking HATE following ongoing series, especially if they're monthly. Weekly isn't nearly as bad, but I think a monthly release schedule seriously fucks with the pacing of the story, to the point that it'll read like a completely different story following it on release vs. reading it serialized when it's complete. And while theoretically part of the fun in following a series as it's ongoing is theorizing with other fans, it's exceedingly difficult to find places for discussion that aren't pozzed to high hell.

That being said I think stories where the overarching plot isn't as important, where the focus is more on character development/character interactions, benefit from being read in a more spread-out manner, and you actively lose out on parts of the story by binging it all in one go.

I learned my lesson with Sailor Moon Crystal. I only jumped in when it was halfway over, but the bimonthly schedule was torture. I legit salute those who stuck with it from day one, I would've just given up.

Gash is early 2000's shonen kino. Even the joke characters had too much heart, Folgore's lion scene and Kanchome becoming a serious threat at the end is 10/10.

Eh? How? Characters die left and right, often after making poor choices. The TV series ending is anime-original as the manga has been put on eternal hiatus.

Crunchyroll decided to produce another cartoon, as if they haven't learnt the first time around:

Crunchyroll Reaches 5 Million Subscribers, Announces New Project

Going hand-in-hand with this milestone, Crunchyroll is proud to announce the development of Dark Star Squadron, an epic animated space opera, in partnership with Zoe Saldana’s Cinestar Pictures. Todd Ludy (Voltron: Legendary Defender) is onboard to write for the series, with Zoe Saldana, Cisely Saldana, and Mariel Saldana of Cinestar Pictures serving as Executive Producers. Sonia A. Gambaro and Maytal Gilboa from Pollinate Entertainment are also producing.

It's probably my favorite of the current streaming services, which isn't hard since I hate all the other ones.

I miss old CLAMP a lot if I'm being honest, even if later Tsubasa really messed everything up at least the beginning was enjoyable. Still fondly remember xxxHolic and the very underappreciated Kobato which I remember doing such a good job at playing with your emotions it made you get emotional over an old tree being sent off (helped by the nice song).
Still have to get around to watching more of their older stuff, especially Cardcaptor since I already got a decent chunk into it.

Sucks attempting to keep up with D.gray-man still with how little it updates, hard to remember what even happens. I am glad the author resumed though and isn't stuck on indefinite hiatus, at least it's not like HnK where the author loves to cause suffering and we have no idea when it'll start up again to see what's next of Phos' never-ending ride of pain.

Imo, there's something interesting in reading something as its progressing versus rereading it when its close to finishing when it comes to stuff that's plot heavy. It also gives me an excuse to constantly reread series.
That being said, when a series turns to shit or the author dies or fucks off, it really sucks.
