fruitiest goddamn thing
I misread this and thought you mean the funniest goddamn thing, and I was like "Yeah, the 2001 anime and the manga is pretty funny".

Now years later having read some shojo manga, is it safe to assume I'm inoculated by now? And is it even worth it? It looks like BL honestly. Sus.
It's not BL, I promise. There's jokes between a couple of guy friends about it, but it's not BL. No gay relationships were made canon at the end of it.

But Fruits Basket is worth the read. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking because it's honestly one of my favorite manga ever, but it's a sweet, soft-spoken romance and of self-acceptance at the heart of it.

Azumanga Daioh doesn't seem that old to me because the '10s were a blur. But I hear it being called the "ancestor of slice of life" or the like.

How old it really is: if this were 2001, Azumanga Daioh would be from 1979-1982.

wow I feel old now lol

People forget this gem, all the comparisons to Azumanga Daioh when in fact it predated it:

Well the manga came first, I guess if the anime was made before Azumanga Daioh, I guess the comparisons would be opposite, popularity, that's a different story.

Caught up with Fruits Basket and while the newer episodes were better than the rather awful episode 6 it's still missing a lot of the impact found in the original. Besides them seeming to cut the entire backstory chapters (my favorite volume of the series) my biggest problem is how little screen time Tohru has been getting this season when at this point in the manga her and her relationship with Kyo had become the main focus.
There was so much internal dialogue from Tohru that hasn't been included in the anime and it's making a lot of the moments not hit as hard. This part in the series is where we're supposed to see Tohru clearly for the first time and realize she is just as mentally hurt as some of the Sohma with how she sees herself as a bad person no matter how many times people praise her. She has an inability to ask other people for help because she doesn't see herself as deserving and what made this part of the manga so impactful was seeing how negatively Tohru saw herself along with inner turmoil. They hinted very clearly in early parts of the series that she was not okay, but this part was where it really dug into it. I'll still maintain that even if it was a small moment I hate that they cut the moment where Tohru first starting reaching her breaking point when Yuki made the whole mention of "The box can't stay shut forever" which made her realize her own "box" was coming undone regarding her love of Kyo increasing and her mom starting to fade from her memory.

So far in the season I haven't felt that focus since it's spent more time with Akito, Kyo, and even Yuki than with Tohru. Episode 9 had the meeting between Akito and Tohru, yet it felt so lacking during moments like Tohru calling herself "Dirty" because there hasn't been much focus on her mental state. In the manga it was clear by this point how she viewed herself and it hurt the reader to see her deride herself so much.

I also legitimately hate that the have cut the entire backstory because it held such emotional impact and really developed Kyoko's character for me. That entire part where she was this close to killing herself because she couldn't take being left behind and then realizing that she had left Tohru behind, not even knowing if Tohru had been eating or doing for the longest time, about to cause the same hurt she was feeling onto Tohru. I fucking hate that they didn't even bother to show Katsuya's face in the brief moment they showed him and the fact that people were actually happy they cut the backstory because of how "problematic" their relationship was. I understand they've had to cut other plot points like the student council member confronting Tohru and not liking her (which I thought they were building to with how much screen time he got but oh well) or Ayame backstory, but to cut the entire Katsuya/Kyoko backstory + the aftermath of his death is way too much. Tohru's major dislike of her father, that she thinks having makes her a bad person, was due to the major depression her mother spiralled into after his death and how he almost took her away from Tohru which is shown in that backstory.

Them cutting Rin attacking Kagura after hitting Tohru was also so bizarre to watch because it was so out of character for Rin, someone who had experience abuse herself. In the anime she just kind of watches without doing anything while in the manga she immediately jumped on Kagura.

I will admit that it's been funny to watch anime onlys upset over the Akito redemption after everything that happened.
So I take it if you wanted to get into fruits basket and have never read/watched it before the reboot is the worst way the experience it, the manga is the best option, and the original 2001 anime is somewhere in the middle.
For me, I'd say it's fine starting with the first two seasons of the new series as they are pretty faithful adaptions and even add some things that make it flow better imo. First season especially was directly supervised by the original author with less involvement going forward. Upon reaching the end of season two, switch to the manga around where that season left off or re-read from the start if you prefer (early fruits basket art is rough though).

The old 2001 anime isn't awful but it suffers from putting so much focus on the comedy of the early parts that when the drama starts kicking in the tone gets weird. It's not really a proper adaption, so I'd definitely recommend having at least read the manga or first season of the new anime if you want that. 2001 is kind of an oddity now I guess, but I'd still give it a watch much in the similar vein as FMA still being a good watch even with FMA:B. Opening for the 2001 anime will always have a special place in my heart and I'd honestly love if they could possible feature it in some way with the remake.
Someone blue pill me on fruits basket, when the anime came out I was in HS and it looked like the, well, fruitiest goddamn thing you could ever imagine, it made me hate shopping for cool animes at the store because I was surrounded by twink merchandise and was in desperate need to chug a bud light and indulge in some notgay.

Now years later having read some shojo manga, is it safe to assume I'm inoculated by now? And is it even worth it? It looks like BL honestly. Sus.
It's worth a read if you're not one bothered by "problematic" content since the author clearly has an age gap fetish. It's up there with Ouran for me though I'd say Fruits Basket is a much more classic shoujo with all the drama for 2000s series. Haven't read either series in a while, but I'll probably re-read Fruits Basket after finishing season 3 just to compare.

I was the biggest manly man anime watching boy back in the day. My gf at the time had me watch it with her and I went from hating it on principle to enjoying it quite a bit. Your mileage may vary, but I thought the old anime was quite enjoyable for what it was.

anyone know or have subs for Kodomo Keisatsu ? live action about cops who get turned into kids? theres 2 hardcodes floating around a dead blog saying they did up to 8 but all the links are dead and no one of the files are in the wild.

So does that mean we don't get to see Kyoko bonding with Kyo and her telling Kyo she'll never forgive him if he doesn't take care of Tohru?

Fuck this season.

Pretty much. The 2001 anime only covers about 1/4 of the story but it's not bad and ends on a satisfying enough note.

The first Fruits Basket anime had impeccable comedic timing, often elevating the jokes from the manga to a higher level.

So does that mean we don't get to see Kyoko bonding with Kyo and her telling Kyo she'll never forgive him if he doesn't take care of Tohru?

Fuck this season.
They did have a short scene of Kyoko bonding with Kyo as a child when Tohru tried confronting Kyo about her feelings right before Akito showed up in episode 9. Didn't explicitly have Kyoko telling Kyo she wouldn't forgive him if he didn't take care of Tohru but that might show up later as he's still seeing her final moments as telling him she wouldn't forgive him.

The last couple of episode have definitely not felt as weirdly rushed as the 6th, but it still makes me want to re-read the manga for all the cut content.

Fruits Basket is one of those shojo manga you can recommend to people who don't generally like shojo.
Can confirm. Not into shojo per say, but fruits basket, ouran, and sailor moon are my go-to's tbh.

Speaking of ouran, I started re-watching it tbh. I needed it right after finishing Jujutsu Kaisen (which I recommend tbh) and god a LOT of shit flew over my head when I was a kid with Ouran. So so SO much.
It's really charming and I remembered bits and pieces, but everything hits differently but it's a fun re-watch to take a break from shounen stuff.
I got Haikyuu S3 on the back burner, it's getting pretty good, still got to touch my Naruto pile, but I'll probably finish Ouran before I get back to those tbh.
Hell, I even got my mom into Ouran and she's finding it enjoyable too tbh.

I don't want a s2 of it however contrary to my last post. When I finish the anime I'll just go for the manga or something. I feel if it needed a S2 it should've happened around the time frame it came out, I feel if it got one now something would be missing.

Ouran is one of those rare instances where I feel the anime is better than the manga, and even the original ending was pretty decent. I like the changes in some of the characterization, biggest one by far being removing the love triangle with the twins and making it so that only one of them was into Haruhi.

Honestly I feel like if it tried to faithfully adapt the manga it would’ve just overstayed its welcome. As far as non-faithful adaptations go, I think it’s one of the best.

A few weeks ago, we opened a poll to find our about our readers’ favorite anime in the iyashikei genre. Generally referred to as “healing anime”; these are titles considered to have a calming or therapeutic effect on viewers. Typically this attributed to a focus on relaxing, conflict-free activities and settings, but it’s a very subjective distinction, and there are many possible reasons a title could be considered to be “healing”.

By now, responses have slowed down sharply after nearly 600 votes, so it’s time to compile the results. These are the top 20 most popular out of the 40 possible choices in the poll:

20. Sweetness & Lightning (7 votes)
19. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless (8 votes)
18. After School Dice Club (9 votes)
17. Girls’ Last Tour (10 votes)
16. My Roommate Is A Cat (11 votes)
15. New Game!! (12 votes)
14. School Babysitters (13 votes)
13. Kamichu! (14 votes)
12. Barakamon (15 votes)
11. Tonikawa: Over the Moon for You (18 votes)
The Helpful Fox Senko-San
10. The Helpful Fox Senko-San (19 votes)
Restaurant to Another World
9. Restaurant to Another World (26 votes)
Natsume's Book Of Friends
8. Natsume’s Book Of Friends (27 votes)
Mushishi
7. Mushishi (31 votes)
Flying Witch
6. Flying Witch (32 votes)
Non Non Biyori
5. Non Non Biyori (33 votes)
Laid Back Camp
4. Laid Back Camp (45 votes)
Azumanga Daioh
3. Azumanga Daioh (55 votes)
Aria
2. Aria (57 votes)
K-On!
1. K-On! (65 votes)
The top 3 results aren’t too surprising. K-on and Aria very popular and Azumanga Daioh is considered by many the big one that first popularized the genre. Some may be surprised that Mushihi didn’t make the top 5, but it seems to have slipped out of favor since its debut in the oughts. Girls’ Last Tour may be the biggest surprise; it gets a lot of critical praise and has a pretty vocal fanbase in healing anime circles, but as far as our voters are concerned, it only ranked #17.

Were you surprised by any of the other results? Was there an unmentioned title you feel should have made the list? Let us know in the comments!

The funny thing is that I already watch half of these, but it’s nice to see Yuru Camp and Non Non Biyori in the top five of these. Though, I’m surprised not a lot of people watch Mushishi and Flying Witch. The latter I managed to find out was just off of randomly looking up anime compilation videos online, where as the former was recommended to me a few years back on Goodreads when I was listing my reading goals on books I read at that time.
