If I remember right, the reason YuGiOh! Kept going was because the duel monsters aspect of the game (introduced in volume 2, then was a primary focus in volumes 4-5) got big. But at least when it did pick up it was a DIRECT continuation. But I haven't read the manga in a long time so forgive me if I am wrong.Damn, now you're making me remember... The changes to Yu-Gi-Oh! going from manga to anime are arguably an even worse rewrite than 4Kids! changes going from Japanese to English (and man, that's saying something). Turns out starting your anime adaptation 8 volumes into the manga wasn't a great idea. It means you have to ass-pull new introductions for tons of characters who people are supposed to already know about by this point. Also, what a wonderful idea, inserting an over 20 episode filler story right in the middle of a tournament arc. Again, I think the worry was since the Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters anime skipped over Kaiba's backstory in the Death-T arc they needed to fill in some gaps otherwise Kaiba's entire motivation at the end of the tournament makes no sense. That's where starting the anime at volume 8 is coming back to bite you in the ass again. Goddamn morons!
Lot's of little world-building details make no sense in the anime too. Like why is Kaiba's duel disk seen as revolutionary, when those ridiculous gigantic duel arenas have been creating volumetric holograms since episode 1? In the manga, up until the duel disk showed up all duels were held inside a box with screens on all 4 walls and the "holograms" were just 3-D rear projection images on the screen behind the player.
Also, I cannot believe that anybody watches any of the Yu-Gi-Oh! spinoff anime (GX, 5D's, etc.). They're all garbage.
Considering the fact that I read the news about someone uploading a pirated copy of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, I honestly don’t think I’ve seen this amount of anime torrenting happening since the early 2000’s.
That wasn't a dub change, that was in the original. IIRC it's part of a codeword so Yusei can get some information he needs or some shit.5d's was great too. I still remember Yusei walking into a bar for a glass of milk.
5D's has that wonderful cyberpunk-meets-Inca aesthetic in the first arc and second arc is like someone wrote a crazy fucking mecha anime and it got turned into a Yugioh show. Unironically really cool in parts even if it drops the ball in others. And yes, children's card games on motorcycles is a blast to watch. Also, I cannot believe that anybody watches any of the Yu-Gi-Oh! spinoff anime (GX, 5D's, etc.). They're all garbage.
Is it, though? Aside from the zombie premise it doesn't really feel all that different from other idol shows. You've got the training montages and inter-character drama leading to character development and the 3D song sequences that pretty much all idol anime I can think of have.It is weird though that I don't think of any other shows that were parodies about the idol genre,
I think you're right. Maybe idol anime are just too simplistic to have a good parody that is longer than a single episode? Unless you go into the more seedy parts that would probably get a studio into a lot of shit.Is it, though? Shame they went for Mezame Returner again, was hoping for maybe Atsuku Nare considering it's Ai and Junko but the new version was really impressiceZombie Land Saga is four for four so far this season. Seems like it's a Lily episode next week.
Well people wanted everything to be Authentically Japanese, so extremely limited runs, and sky high scalper prices are the norm over there.I won't repeat my rant from the collectors market thread, but it'll suffice to say I don't get what these companies have to gain pandering to scalpers this way. Especially when Dark Horse (or whoever owns the rights now) could easily put those books on print-on-demand. I don't understand the logic.
I haven't actually rewatched much of Yu-Gi-Oh, but I remember I was about to watch Arc-V and then stopped after hearing about the massive bedshitting that occurred at the end that was so massive it made nico nico history for poor ratings. I remember at one point it over took every other anime to dominate the top 10 list for worst episodes with the last arc or something. Also the spin offs are good in their own way. The manga's are also pretty interesting as well, but I like the anime's better. I need to just do a whole Yu-Gi-Oh binge again but I refuse to watch past Arc V. Vrains and 7's don't appeal to me. ESPECIALLY 7's. That shit looks like it's that inuzuma 11 soccer shit tbh.
Rewatching Yugioh sounds like a chore anyways, the dub Kaiba one-liner compilations are enough for me.I haven't actually rewatched much of Yu-Gi-Oh, but I remember I was about to watch Arc-V and then stopped after hearing about the massive bedshitting that occurred at the end that was so massive it made nico nico history for poor ratings. Yeah I've heard the Kaiba movie is pure Kaiba wank which makes me greatly interested in seeing it as a big fan of Kaiba.I might watch that one Kaiba movie though, I saw the clip where he fires someone over a water bottle not being sturdy enough, classic Kaiba.
"Fire whoever made that bottle. Kaiba Corps products aren't supposed to bend that easily."Rewatching Yugioh sounds like a chore anyways, the dub Kaiba one-liner compilations are enough for me.

I remember a long time ago going to see the Yu-Gi-Oh pyramid film (can't remember its name) when we actually got it released in theatres around here and they gave everyone that showed up a pack of promo cards. Thought it was the coolest thing ever even if I didn't actually play the card game and just collecting them like pokemon.DSOD WAS REALLY GOOD.
Huge Kaiba fangirl ofc so it's my bias, but seeing it in theaters was AMAZING. Sadly the theater wouldn't sell their banner to me so when I went to see Demon Slayer last week I didn't bother trying to buy the poster since they said "we can't sell to outsiders / somebody on staff may have already called dibs on it".
Plus its only like $5 if you want a physical copy at Walmart. They play it on TV once in a blue moon too.
For me, there's a part involving a certain character that kind of didn't make sense to me, but I just need to do a re-watch of the movie. Also if you like 5d's, you can kinda see that influence in domino city's changing atmosphere. Also, this is super dumb but I love the little construction helmet bewd you can see on one of the posters.
Personally, I don't agree with the ending and it doesn't sit right with me because of certain character things but I won't say anything since I want people to watch the movie first before I spurge about it. But it was SUPER pretty and a must-see for Kaiba fans. I left the theater crying like a bitch but it's cause i'm over sensitive and an unapologetic Kaiba fan.
Yep that was pyramid of Light and people got a blue eyes shining dragon. Sadly that was before my yugioh phase.I remember a long time ago going to see the Yu-Gi-Oh pyramid film (can't remember its name) when we actually got it released in theatres around here and they gave everyone that showed up a pack of promo cards. Ugh, that terrible line is obviously a total 4Kids! rewrite. In Japanese he is just yelling in his frustration over how there is no point dueling a mere virtual recreation of the other Yugi.I might watch that one Kaiba movie though, I saw the clip where he fires someone over a water bottle not being sturdy enough, classic Kaiba.
Yea that's the part I cried at.Ugh, that terrible line is obviously a total 4Kids! rewrite. In Japanese he is just yelling in his frustration over how there is no point dueling a mere virtual recreation of the other Yugi.
Dark Side of Dimensions is actually the canon sequel to the manga, in which Kaiba is obsessed with dueling the other Yugi again and. However, again this makes absolutely no sense for anime watchers. In the manga the last you see of Kaiba is at the end of Battle City. While he is still struggling with whether he'll ever be able to let go of his hate instilled in him by his cruel stepfather, he leaves and is never seen again. His rivalry with Yugi is still unresolved. But in the anime Kaiba is there at the shrine in Kul Elna, and he says his final goodbyes to the other Yugi along with all of Yugi's friends.he spends millions to re-excavate and re-assemble the Millennium Puzzle only to finally realize that Atem's spirit is not longer inside it and he is gone for good. Then he builds what is essentially a convoluted suicide machine to kill himself so he can travel to the Egyptian afterlife to finally see Atem again. Talk about gay
I highly recommend watching Dark Side of Dimensions in Japanese because the dialogue really is hugely different, and there are some pretty bizarre themes that don't come up in the dub at all. Luckily it is one of the few pieces of Yu-Gi-Oh! animation where 4Kids! actually included the Japanese language on the Blu-ray. Also it is recommended that you read the two-shot manga Transcend Game, which lays the background for some of the more out there ideas. Namely the concept that what we think of as physical reality is actually a construct created by the collective subconscious of human beings, and that if you could harness and focus enough collective subconscious (either through technology or magic) you could change reality itself.
Again, world building details make no sense for anime watchers. Why is the Duel Links system considered revolutionary when there have already been two virtual world story arcs? Whereas in the manga this would be the first time any kind of total virtual reality is introduced.Of course, it all turns out to be a ruse as Kaiba's real motive is to connect thousands of people to his virtual reality system and then funnel their collective subconscious into his suit to give himself essentially magic powers.
I mean, that was kind of the point. The original anime itself is a pretty generic kids' show that didn't do so hot on release. ADV was approached to do a dub for Western audiences, and aside from a couple basic rules like not changing character names, they were given free reign to do whatever they wanted to make it a success. The result was a highly-improvised gag dub that proved way more popular than a one-to-one dub would likely have ever been.Ghost stories really does come off as abridged on a first impression. They really went overboard with the localization.
Power tool dragon. Untapped meme potential. Never seen in the anime but heavily advertised at the start of the 5DS anime in the card sets.I remember a long time ago going to see the Yu-Gi-Oh pyramid film (can't remember its name) when we actually got it released in theatres around here and they gave everyone that showed up a pack of promo cards. Don't get me wrong, excessive localization is annoying to see, especially in your favorite series. But I don't think there are that many Ghost Stories fans out there who are genuinely upset over the gag dub, and it's unlikely that sort of situation will ever happen again anyway.
