Worst part of Chainsawman is definitely the pacing. The characters have good CONCEPTS, but you don’t really get the breathing room to let the emotional beats hit like they should. Hopefully the anime will improve on it by expanding the slice of life moments a bit, to serve as a breather between the action.

JJK wasn’t really my jam, it started losing me during the Shibuya arc where it seems like convenient coincidences happen just to advance the plot. I also found the side characters way more compelling than the actual main characters, who are honestly kinda bland in their motivations. The best part about it is the world building, but that can’t carry a story.

While we’re talking about “modern” shonen, I’m gonna recommend Jugokuraku/Hell’s Paradise. Where JJK has characters I really don’t care about and Chainsawman has characters where I feel that I should like more than I actually do, Hell’s Paradise had me liking literally everyone in the 10+ character main cast and actually tearing up at some of the deaths, which needless to say is pretty rare. It’s also actually over, and while the ending wasn’t amazing it’s at worst passable, which already puts it above most Shonen manga.

Adding onto my endless pile of animes while watching Gundam Zeta and Gundam Origin

Dorohedoro is something I watch here and there and it's just an absolute treat esp the OP's and ED's.

Jujutsu Kaisen is SURPRISNGLY good.
I wanted to start reading it when I found it in a store before the anime aired but I didn't have money but I started the anime recently and I was pleasantly surprised. The only reason I was a little deterred was from the idiots of the internet going "ItS bEtTeR nArUtO/ NaHRuTO CoDeD".
Like don't get me wrong, call me a normal fag but i'm super late to the Naruto party but I like Naruto so far (ep 88 as of rn) but the say jujutsu kaisen is better naruto just feels wrong?? I think the only reason people are saying that is because of the designs and that's it, or they're some kinda SJW types "down with sexist kishimoto" or some shit I dunno.
Like alright the characters look like "we got naruto at home" but to me it's nothing LIKE naruto. I'm doing the dub and i'm enjoying where it's going even if i'm on episode 5.

Also I started Redo of Healer since I saw it pop up in the thread a few times. Yea the plot is fucking stupid but like it's some weird train wreck you can't look away from. I don't hate it, I have the chance to just put it DOWN since i'm not super invested (i'm on ep 3 now) but like I just want to see what kinda whack ass shit happens if episode 2 is any indication of where the FUCK shit is going.

Also is chainsaw man worth looking into? The art look's really good.

Naruto gets bad around Shippuden, early on it's good. Later on you have legendary scenes like Naruto having homoerotic hyperventilation attacks over best guy ever Sasuke, his very best friend and the only person to ever matter in his life. Needless to say Naruto is also baby's first long-running WSJ manga#2345t6754 so all opinions that compare something negatively to Naruto can be safely dismissed as incoherent blabbering from dummies who've watched perhaps 2 things or are so deep in the nostalgia googles abuse the world looks pink to them with or without the googles.

If anything Jujutsu Kaisen is like diet HxH. It's pretty alright so far.

rDid those people confused about Nagatoro's ethnicity ever see that one summer episode of K-On!! where Azusa Nakano got so tanned that her friend Ui Hirasawa didn't recognize her at first?

Personally, if I didn't already know that Nagatoro's just a Japanese girl who got tan due to her practicing in the outdoor pool for the swim club, I'd assume she was supposed to be east Indian or southeast Asian, not black or Hispanic.
i thought she was southeast too like Aung from ribbon warrior. but hey, tanned jap is more believable than blasian.

anyone know if the fansubs will use "normalfag" like the scans? that was a fun outrage moment.

As a kid my long shounen of choice was Yugioh, DBZ, and Bleach cuz I had an irrational hate boner for Naruto as a kid for some reason.
I'm kinda watching shippuden via toonami and the ns games but i can agree the latter half of the ninja war is straight up ass since SOMEBODY AHEM died which in itself was pointless as shit. Naruto i picked up on a whim but I don't regret it even if im extra super late. Also orochimaru vs hiruzen was dragged out too fucking LONG. 10 EPISODES DAMMIT.

Any translator who thinks his or her or its name deserves to be next to the author or mangaka deserves to be shot. You only get a small line of text by the copyright logo inside the book faggot.
CSM is a pretty gritty manga. So if you can handle the hardcore grit. Then you'll love it.
bang

They warn you not to use slang in writing since it dates your writing, and meme shit ends up dated insanely fast. A lot of manga like Nagatoro-san is meant to be ambiguous as to the date, so there's no reason to translate it with Current Year slang or memes. It's the same thing as seeing something like "talk to the hand" in a 90s dub or sub when there's a better translation.
Yeah, its basically writing 101 to NOT use *current day meme/viral shit* because it instantly dates your writing and by the time it gets published, you're filling it with anachronisms. Its fucking weird to go back and read shit that included old memes because oh lord its cringe. It renders a work stale when it doesn't need to be. Sadly a lot of translators fail to fucking realize this and are fucking retarded. 'Sus' is relatively innocuous because while it means shit from 'Among Us' now, when that fades it still has the shortening of suspicious even if no one remembers it is a meme. So its tolerable. Its not like when I re-read Tokyo Ghoul and there was a 'Why so serious' meme in there it made me groan.

Also I laugh my ass off at British fansubs in mangas because they're always using 'Oi!' and 'Lad' even though the manga takes place in Japan. It is still leagues better than official viral and meme trash.

The argument for Jujutsu Kaijin = Naruto is purely that the main character trio + mentor are all the same exact tropes as Naruto except more grounded and less autistic. I picked up on it immediately and bullied a friend about it but I wasn't surprised other people realized it too.

Speaking of JJKs anyone else up to date with the manga? I personally don't know how to feel about about the new arc, with the whole Death game Battle Royale in post apocalyptic Tokyo.

Her circle of friends also use Japanese slang all the time, especially that one who calls him Paisan all the time. I wonder how they're going to sub that bit of dumb slang. Best portrayal of Japanese high school girls since this:

I actually find the break neck pacing of chainsawman to be a breath of fresh air. Way too many shounen manga are bloated and drag for dozens of chapters at times, so seeing Chainsawman eagerly leap from one event to the next makes it really fun. plus I don't think we were supposed to get all that attached to that many of the characters emotionally rather than viewing them and their roles in the story as food for thought. I think Fujimotos heavy influence from film really shines through in this way.

I dunno how to properly put it into words because this is very much going into subjective nuances of why characters ”work” or “don’t work” for us, but with Chainsawman my main issue was that clinically, from an outside perspective, looking at the character traits I could say “yeah, these are characters with interesting motivations that make sense based on the lives they’ve lived”, but I just didn’t really connect with them on an emotional level, which I think is important for any kind of “serious” story where characters aren’t just stock tropes used to advance the plot.

I don’t want to come off as too harsh because I really do like Chainsawman, and I also appreciate its pace at times. I just wish that when it DOES slow down at the end of an arc, it wouldn’t immediately start gunning into the next one. The biggest example for me was Aki’s death where it’s suggested that Denji and Power spend a decent amount of time bumming around, but it’s all kinda glossed over in a few pages before immediately jumping to the next thing. That’s supposed to be a serious emotional moment, and I think it would benefit from slowing down a bit to give it the proper impact.

Basically, I just want an extra 4-5 chapters spread throughout the manga where the characters have some downtime between big encounters. I also wouldn’t mind if MAPPA did the same thing they’re doing with JJK and just insert slice-of-life shorts at the end of the episode, just to give us some more time with the characters.

Given that a major plot point is that Makina is giving Denji a taste of the good life before cruelly taking it away, I think it would benefit from showing us more of the lighthearted slice of life stuff, so that it hurts more when everything comes tumbling down.

I can see where youre coming from, but I simply disagree. that "bumming around" period after
Akis death
in particular i think is a great example of what i mean. I think back to, say, The French Connection where in the final scene the main character, in his moby dick esque obsession to capture the antagonist, he shoots one of his own men and continues his chase without even making note of it. its a whirlwind of emotion that has been built up for the entire movie and yet all of that emotion is conveyed in nothing but a brief moment on the actors face, and in just that one instant you know all you need to know about what the character is feeling and how what has just transpired has effected him. The same is true here for this great short section of Denji looking at the ice cream stick that says "winner" on it, which is both a cruel irony considering his situation but also a sickening reminder of who he had just "won" against in the chapter prior. so sickening in fact that he immediately pukes up the ice cream. all you need to know gut punchingly delivered in just two pages, it doesnt need to be dwelled on or explicitly spelled out how Denji feels. Him and power doing nothing but playing video games and watching movies all day is simply a coping mechanism to escape the reality of what they have just lived through, but no matter what they do they cant stop thinking about it.

also, keep in mind for that last part that a "good life" for Denji up to that point was more or less the bare minimum for most people. I think it was kindve the point that it wasnt really even that light hearted, and in fact it was still kind of shitty.

edit: im new and cant into formatting so i did the best my 20 iq points could possibly muster

You make some good points. Perhaps these are things that WOULD just work better in an anime, where you’re not relying on the reader to read at their own pace and can rely on timing to better sell a scene.

Either way I’m excited to see the anime, I think if they don’t do a shit job with it it easily has the potential to be better than the manga. Especially the action, which can start to get a bit incomprehensible at times.

Also FYI, there’s an inline spoiler tag (the blurred text I used) which is located in the text formatting dropdown that’s generally better to use for short text.

its MAPPA doing it right? I dont trust them after this Attack on Titan CGI fest to be honest, but as I understand it that production in particular had some horrid scheduling issues to push out the season to coincide with the manga ending (to boost sales...somehow?) so hopefully MAPPA really brings their A game like I know they can this time.

Yeah, but they’re also doing JJK and while I haven’t been watching it myself, everything I’ve heard about it has been positive.

Granted, that might mean they’re doing AOT S4 part 2, JJK S2 and CSM at the same time (I dunno if that’s how the release schedules actually line up I’m just speculating) which would probably be a disaster, because I’m sure among those 3 CSM would be getting the shaft if they had to manage their time and resources.

I do not know anything about Chainsawman. Heard it was getting an anime. That is it.

But based on what you two have said about it..... I will check it out.

Yes, MAPPA is doing Chainsawman. I'm also worried. Mainly cause it seems like they are spreading themselves too thin by doing a bunch of projects all at once/back to back.

Juju Kaisen was alright. But that is about it.

It went downhill for me after episode 13. Mainly due to the pacing being weird by introducing a metric fuck ton of side characters and then throwing all their back stories at you.

Really fucked with the action sequences in jarring way.

Like @Tism the Return said, it feels like a diet Hunter x Hunter at this point.
