I got into subs back in high school, back before crunchyroll. When you had all kinds of autistic fansubbers with their own weeb quirks. Pet translator's notes (i.e. One Piece subbers had a fixation on "nakama"), using special fonts/effects for characters calling attacks, etc. Every now and then you'd have memeworthy garbage translations. Fansubbers still exist, but things are nowhere what they were before Crunchyroll. Or maybe they still are and I'm an out of touch boomer
This reminds me of when Fate/apocrypha was airing and as the official subs were trapped in netflix limbo you had that classic feeling of multiple parties rushing out their speedsubs, and one of the subbers did an extra subtitle thing with the characters' special attacks like how the mobile game does it. So instead of just "Clarent blood Arthur" for Mordred the subber would write:
Clarent blood arthur
Rebellion against my beautiful father

Does Death Note ever get good? I'm three volumes into it and its just page after page of characters with room temperature IQs talking about how smart they are.
I haven't read Death Note in a really long time and I never finished it or the anime (stopped reading after a certain event) but I'd say up until that point it was a pretty okay read then after said point felt like it was stretching it out. Think my favorite part of Death Note was actually the novel Death Note: Another Note which wasn't even written by the duo behind Death Note but the guy who wrote all the Bakemonogatari novels. Book had Naomi Misora as one of the main characters and it honestly felt like a more intriguing murder mystery than Death Note.

I think one of the reasons for the hype around the series was that it was a lot of anime fans first "darker mature" series before they started diving into other series. Personally, if I ever got an itch to revisit the series it would be the novel and not the actual manga or anime since they do suffer a bit from the whole make characters other than main guys act retarded to make main guys seem smarter.

After L died I stopped reading/watching because for me it meant that Light had won in the end and I had no interest in reading further. I mainly liked the series as a cat and mouse between L and Light, after L was out of the picture I stopped caring. Once I saw them roll Near and Mello out as replacements for L I just dropped it entirely because I felt it didn't matter. Light had won against the one person he really considered a rival to his plans. Probably my favorite part of the series is when L dies because of how iconic that part became, enough that it would get parodies featured in other shows:

I know what happens in the end but I don't care because the main reason I was reading it was no longer there.

I dunno what I was expecting from Majo no tabitabi but it sure didn't take long for it to go to depressiontown. Though I guess it wouldn't be the first time for this genre cause Kino no tabi could also get depressing.

Bit of a random thing to bring up, but who here has seen and/or read Elfen Lied, and what are your thoughts on it?

All I know is that it has quite a love it or hate it relationship amongst the anime community, and that it is essentially "F.E.A.R., anime edition", at least based off what I've seen of it.

I think I started the anime a month or two ago (can't really get too deep into it because I have irl stuff to handle... still on eps 4) but I'm liking it so far.

Going into it, I thought it would be some try hard bullshit. Not disappointed, in the least.

I saw it a long while ago and I thought the anime was complete dog shit. Now I've heard that the manga isn't nearly as bad but I don't really care enough to read it.

New chapter came out for D.Grayman, only like 14 pages after 3 months, but I'm just happy to see it still going. Newest arc is also going into Allen's past before he was "Allen" and filling in some details while also raising a bunch of questions that probably won't be answered in a long time. The one that's bugging me the most is if Mana is just the Earl than who/what is the Mana that Allen brings back after making a deal with the Earl shown at the beginning of the series? Also I wish the author would stop rubbing in the fact that Timcanpy died in my face every time he shows up in the flashback, still haven't gotten over that and I'm still hoping they'll pull something so he can come back. I don't think Hoshino is a lover of suffering and despair like HnK author Ichikawa, so I still have hope we'll get a semi-happy ending for D.Grayman and Allen. Can't wait to see how Ichikawa will ruin Christmas this year.

Honestly, I might just re-read D.Grayman again because the gaps in chapters makes it easy to forget stuff and it helps the newer chapters flow a bit better. Might even check out Hallow, all I've heard about it is the animation wasn't the best though. I still have it better than Berserk or HxH fans since at least the author for D.Grayman does have a schedule they follow.

Elfen Lied was one of my first anime so it holds some sentimentality for me. It's edgy as fuck but I like it. Never bothered with the manga, but I know how it ends and that was enough to turn me off tbh, I'm content with the anime's ending.

But yeah, it is a very divisive series. Most either love it or hate it.

I'll be honest, I have no idea what's going on with Mana/the Millenium Earl and Nea. Maybe it's just me but this shit is confusing and seems to keep going in circles. The most I can say is that Mana's dog was adorable. And yeah, I miss Timcanpy too, still kinda hoping he'll come back somehow.

Hallow is alright. The animation is fine IMO but the new voice actors are hit or miss.

Oh man I didn't even think about the probability of new voice actors, hopefully it won't bug me too much.

One of the reasons I wanted to reread was to see if the whole Mana/Earl and Nea thing make more sense because I remember getting it at one point and now I'm mostly lost. It was like Allen had Nea inside him but then there was something about Nea aging in reverse and I thought Allen is just young Nea, I'm entirely lost at this point how Allen connects to Nea.

I really loved how the author drew Mana's dog and his interactions with young Allen were incredibly cute. I mean, even young Allen is quite adorable and it's quite interesting to see Allen before he created that super polite shell around himself. I hope whoever killed the dog faces a horrible death.

There's a frankness to the violence that's unusual and sort of bracing, and the anime OP is an all-time great, but the writer is a bit too fond of piss and the manga ending is a table-flipper.

Was absolute shit. I've no idea how anyone can like it unless they're blinded by nostalgia.

Lot of anime seems to have become beloved because they came out in a time when people had to go through hurdles to even obtain the anime so it became exotic. Lot of the love for it seems to be due to the violence being more extreme than western cartoons which probably appealed to a lot of kids that were downloading it back in the day since it'd make it feel sorta taboo to be enjoying.

Most of the new VAs are pretty similar to the originals, but Lavi in particular sounds really different.

Glad it's not just me lol. Nea as a whole confuses me. And yeah, I get the feeling that asshole clown, Cosimov, is the one who killed the dog.

I read the whole manga over a few days during college. I liked it, but I wouldn't say I loved it. I read that the anime left one of the characters out, likely due to her having to wear diapers.

Fuck off. We already had Afro Samurai and it didn't need wokeshit
This new series is actually based on a real person, though.
