The pile-up on the Guardian reminds me of when FUNimation made a "GURL POWER" video earlier this year claiming anime hasn't had strong female characters until in recent years and us Kiwi weebs spammed a few pages with images and blurbs of strong female characters that go back to the '60s to tell them they're full of shit and to fuck off.

Oh yeah, while not black we obviously can't forget Scar from FMA, whose people are a not-so-subtle stand-in for middle easterners in a not-so-subtle reference to the war in Iraq (which was happening right around the time the manga was being written).

So the new season has begun and some stuff I wanted to watch has started airing.

Haikyuu is the same as always and while I'm not as hyped for it anymore as I used to be I still like the main characters enough to keep watching.
Majo no tabitabi impressed me with its animation quality and while its first episode doesn't say much about how the rest will turn out it was a good setup episode for the protagonist and her motivations. Cute witch girl goes on adventures, I guess.
I also picked up Hypnosis mic cause it may end up giving me similar vibes as King of prism where you've got the premise of idol boys being executed in the most over the top and hilariously stupid way possible. The entire premise is a group of militaristic women taking over japan, getting rid of conventional weaponry and replacing them with magical microphones that gangs of men are using to make magical sound explosions and shit. It's obvious fujo and otome self-insert bait but it seems amusing enough.
There's also Yuukoku no Moriarty which is obviously based on the Sherlock setting but it takes the approach of making Moriarty the protagonist and it depicts him as sort of vigilante version of Sherlock. Also he has two brothers working with him and all 3 are prettyboys.

There's more shows I have on my list for this season but they haven't aired yet.

I also checked out Hypnosis Mic, it was pretty fun, and while the songs weren't the best they were listenable to a certain extent. Best song has to be Flinge Posse's though, if for nothing else the snoop dog dance.
I also watched Warlords of Sigrdrifa, written by the same guy who wrote Re:Zero. It was alright and the plane dogfighting was pretty cool. That being said, for an hour long episode it didnt really stand out all that much.

I haven't heard of that, what did he say? The only "critique" I've noticed while reading is a general overarching one the way Korean society is stratified and people being too focused on getting a one up on the next guy. "fuck you got mine" and such.

First Godzilla TV anime, yeah, but we had the movie anime trilogy by Polygon Pictures on Netflix.

For me, today marks the almost three year anniversary of when I first heard about Initial D. Without ever watching the anime, I remember that there was an episode of Lucky Star where they parodied this anime in one of the scenes where Kagami was nervous that Cousin Yui was going to start a race with a driver that cut her off in traffic.

I was also surprised that this anime was also on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block many years ago, which probably adds credence to the fact that the 2000’s anime boom only added a selected amount of popular anime that mostly young teenagers would watch. Yet, Initial D was the only one that stood out to me from a manga perspective. Recently, I read a few chapters from this, and I must admit that for its time, it was a really unique manga to read. It also speaks volumes that on 4chan’s /a/, it was also the same week that I happened to see a post of anon asking why we never get anymore racing like anime shown to the public.

Either way, long live Initial D, both First and Second Stage.

The concepts sound absurd, but they're actually really well done, pretty daring and the West doesn't have the imagination or balls to even do. They're both shows you can't do without taking the risk. Tanya you could NEVER do, because progtards can't tell the difference between WWI and WWII.

...I kinda liked the Umineko anime. I don't remember if I played the first four VNs or skipped to 5, probably the former because I remember the first VN taking fucking forever to start.

And if we're speaking about it, what do you think about the VN ending? Without spoiling it too much, it is somewhat similar to Last of Us 2 "fuck you viewer" (though not for all fans, just the ones who really want to know who dun it in a murder mystery). It seems to pretty much confirm Butler did it because his family was the only ones who had any real reason to massacre everyone on the island due to underworld connections.

I was one of the mystery fans, but the key to understanding Umineko's ending is that Ryukishi had a close friend that he bounced his ideas off of who was the real mystery lover and that friend died unexpectedly after they'd finished the fifth chapter. That's really when things start spinning apart, in my opinion. Never mind the reveal of who Beatrice really is, which felt partly like tumblr pandering, since it was their favorite fan theory. Ryukishi also loves to be transgressive and shocking for it's own sake.

But seriously, you can't do a "This series is a mystery and here are all these tropes and rules we're following" and then go "LOL, the truth doesn't matter." That's not how mystery novels fucking work and I always felt he only did it to justify his sudden tumblr pandering. Admittedly, I don't care enough to go back through and see if the two characters in question are ever acknowledged as being seen together, but part of the point of the later manga was to smooth over those issues.

Ryukishi is good at thrillers like Higurashi, but without his friend he sucks at mystery. There are rules to the genre, and while Chandler hated the established rules he knew how mystery novels were supposed to work well enough to break them without fucking the whole thing up. Ryukishi doesn't.

Up until it crashes, Umineko is fucking great. Then it falls off a cliff. Don't know that you'll ever get a good anime translation of it, unless you could convince SHAFT to do it like they've done Monogatari. SHAFT would do it right, but you'd need a lot of cours.

The concepts sound absurd, but they're actually really well done, pretty daring and the West doesn't have the imagination or balls to even do. They're both shows you can't do without taking the risk. Tanya you could NEVER do, because progtards can't tell the difference between WWI and WWII.

GuP's like watching an animated Zucker movie. The whole thing is absurd, but it works because it's played completely straight. Like Naked Gun, but with schoolgirls and tanks.

I tried watching some shows this season, no idea if I'll keep up but I thought I'd share some thoughts on what I've watched so far.

Spoiler: Took up more space than I thought to go over all the shows.

-Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko - I've been reading the manga for a bit, nothing groundbreaking but I light read. Anime is in the same vein though it does some interesting stuff by not revealing the whole isekai aspect till the second half of the episode. Having said that I'll just stick to the manga as I find the artwork there is a lot nicer and it being animated didn't really add to much for me.

-Maou-jou de Oyasumi - Fan of the manga and the adaption didn't disappoint, the visuals even added to it. Going to stick with this one since it seems pretty faithful to the manga and is able to capture the humor of it pretty well. Both the opening and ending theme are a treat to listen to with some nice visuals to go along with it.

-Majo no Tabitabi - Enjoyed this one too and I've heard it described as Kino's Journey but with witches so it'll probably be good. Going to stick with this one as well as long as it doesn't nosedive in quality later on.

-Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai - Was a fan of the original Love Live anime but never got into Sunshine, the character design change made me take a leap of faith. Glad that I did as it proved to be very enjoyable and tried hard to disconnect itself from the previous two entries, had some really great CGI dance sequences too and the music was pretty good (I couldn't find a clip of it from the show but the first song sung was this). Probably going to stick with this one, from what they've shown of the cast they look like they'll be a fun group, would only recommend if you're already into idol girl shows though. Only current problem is that I don't think there's any group subbing the songs which kind of sucks, like watching symphogear without subbed songs.

-Yuukoku no Moriarty - I've read some of the manga for this and enjoyed it, episode was anime original (I think) but was still great. I'm a sucker for mystery/detective shows so I'll probably stick with this, helps that the cast is pretty great.

-Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear - Was looking forward to this one as a fan of the manga but was sadly very disappointed with their baffling directing decisions on the first episode. They skipped a bunch of stuff and the way they cut scenes together make it seem like it's a vrmmo world instead of isekai, I have no idea why they jumped around without explaining that anytime she's not in her bear suit is happening in the past before she's isekai'd. They also just throw a bunch of characters at you and I think really messed up properly presenting the tone of the series with the event they decided to focus on. I'm honestly curious how people with no background knowledge of the series felt about the first episode. I'm not going to be watching any farther myself and am just going to stick to the manga, which is sad since I liked seeing Yuna animated.

-Ikebukuro West Gate Park - I didn't actually watch this one. While I was browsing through the thread for the first episode on /a/ I learned that this apparently had a fairly popular jdrama adaption in the 00s and those that had seen it recommend not bothering with the anime, instead told to check out the show. From shifting through the complaints it seems like they've made the characters a lot more plain and gone for a much more serious tone, which took out most of the fun created by the character interpretations of the jdrama. Someone described it as Durarara if all the colorful personalities were sucked out. I've decided to just check out the jdrama instead as it seems to be the fan favorite.

Overall, of the 7 shows I looked into I'll probably stick with 4. I already knew I'd probably like Maou-jou and Moriarty but surprised with how enjoyable I found Love Live and Majo no Tabitabi. As to other series this season, I'll probably also check out Ochikobore Fruit Tart and Taisou Zamurai when they eventually air since they sound interesting to me, might also check out Jujutsu Kaisen. I haven't watched the Mahouka movie yet and it's been a while since I've seen the first season so I'll probably marathon the newest season after I watch through the previous entries.

They definitely mixed WWI and WWII together there. It kinda starts as WWI then decides it always wanted to be WWII, if fought by the German Empire.

What is Girl Und Panther? I always saw it around but I thought it was shotoff game to Azure Lane so never bothered looking into it. Does it have some sort of history before the Anime or is it just a one off anime.
