Niggers of the anime thread, in light of ever vaster stretches of western media franchises turning to burning shit I have decided to indulge in another full length animay binge

Specifically the source of this seasonal mayme

Now, informed sources have revealed to me that this is that "Fate/Zero" doohicky franchise I periodically see mentioned in a positive way by neckbeards, and apparently the nip behind it also did Meduka which I rather liked, so I have decided to bite the "wait a minute there are HOW MANY different spinoffs and prequels and tie ins to this shit?!" bullet and steam through it over the coming weeks, a fact aided by me being entirely unspoiled thus far apart from vaguely knowing a bunch of historical and mythological figures are depicted as anime girls.

My question to yall is what exact viewing order is recommended?

The Fate series can be viewed, despite there being so much of it, as completely seperate from each other and doesn't really require you to watch one show to understand the other. I'll give a quick breakdown of all the various animes and where they fall in relation to each other.

The Fate/stay night series is based on a Japanese visual novel, which has 3 seperate routes depending on the heroine you chose. They had a 2006 TV anime of the same name dealing with the first route, a 2010 movie that was turned into a TV show in 2015 dealing with the second and an as of yet unfinished movie trilogy of the third. The cast is pretty much the same, but the shows are totally different. It is best to start here if you are totally new to Fate.

Fate/Zero is a prequel to stay night and while it is arguably the "best" show overall, watching this first will ruin a lot of the surprises and setups in the Fate/stay night shows. The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II:Rail Zeppelin take place between Zero and Stay night, and is essentially a detective series featuring a Zero character and his interactions with background characters in the series. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya is the magical girl spinoff show that takes characters from both FSN and Zero and uses them as the main cast.

Fate/Extra: Last Encore is a part of the alternate universe Fate/Extra series, which is almost entirely based on a series of videogames. Last Encore is a pretty different retelling of the events of the first game and is....seen as pretty bad by fans due to how off script the show goes. If you don't have any experience with the games your mileage may vary.

Fate/Apocrypha is another alternate universe and has no connection to any other series and can be enjoyed with no knowledge of any other show.

Fate/Grand Order is a japanese gacha mobile game in its own seperate universe from the other Fate shows, but characters from other shows will make cameos or appearances. First Order is a TV movie adaptation of the prologue of the game, and the currently airing Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia is based on the 7th chapter of the game. A 2 part movie will be released in Japan sometime in 2020 dealing with the 6th chapter of the game.

Lastly, Today's Menu for the Emiya Family and Carnival Phantasm are shows that utilize the cast from FSN and are more about cooking in the case of Emiya Family and about in jokes and comedy in the case of Carnival Phantasm.

I think the LN of Overlord does Ainz better because you're usually in his head seeing him misinterpret everything around him because he's ultimately a middle management salaryman in way over his head. He doesn't really do horror or remorse because of the lich emotions hand wave but he is anxious and second guesses himself all the time. The anime tries to do it too but it seems to be less of a focus so they can focus on Ainz splating things.

At the same time, it's hard to say if he wasn't just a borderline sociopath to begin with because he effectively has no social life outside of this one videogame (which is why he was the last one left of a guild that listed an outside life as a requirement) and clearly has trouble with empathy.

There's usually more leeway in novels, but Overlord is more plot-focused than character focused, so it sort of just waves that away. I also have to say, I'm EXTREMELY biased against plot-based stories vs. character-based stories. I don't feel like they offer enough emotional resonance and with something like Overlord where you really can explore this degradation of humanity.

I know its less popular, but How Not to Summon a Demon Lord did better with the 'Evil Isekai' than Overlord, because he has to pretend to be evil to fulfill his role. With Overlord, I feel like there's a lot of wasted potential as you've got this guy who has no idea how to be charismatic, forced to be or all these minions will turn on him. Or actually earn their loyalty. But it turns out they're all loyal to him already and he simply goes with the flow of a lot of things. Not to say he doesn't accomplish things or is intelligent, he is. But just that there's a lot of wasted potential. I also realize the show is extremely tight on time, having basically 12-13 episodes to get shit done in, so a lot of things feel rushed.

You could imply that, but we learn very little about Ainz himself and most of it is brushed away. You could say he was a borderline sociopath or misanthrope, but he did genuinely seem to care about his guild mates and things like that.

*gulp*

Looks like imma have to try out visual novels for the first time then.

Interesting. Studio Gallop has finally been booted off the Yugioh franchise. Studio Bridge is taking over for the new series

That's like the equivalent of OLM turning over Pokemon to another studio (which they did, somewhat, with Origin), or Sunrise giving away Gundam. Is Gallop dying, or just a contract with Konami not get renewed?

With Pokemon, OLM's no stranger to farming out work (a good chunk of their recent seasons were done by small-time subcontractor Studio Takuranke for instance, and Wit Studio helped out on the most recent animated film) And Gallop seems to be alive as they're working with Toei on a fishing anime. It could very well be a contract issue of some sort on either Konami or Gallop's end.

I'm guessing Gallop lacks the resources to continue working on the Yugioh series. Don't forget, not only was the premier of Vrains a month later than expected, it also ended with only 120 episodes, leaving plot points unexplained/unexplored. This might've resulted in either Konami pulling the plug, or Gallop backing out of production voluntarily for a new series.

Then you might like Saya no uta it's written by the same guy who did fate/zero and madoka.

Probably gonna take a while to get round to it. Found an LP of Fate/Stay Night without some nasally weeb commentating/narrating and am making my way through it assisted by my custom "super-fast forward" app that actually makes the text go tolerably fast instead of lingering for five minutes on every page.

At this point I am two days in to the fate route and am not exactly hating it so far, though I was prewarned that it starts fairly slow so I tempered my expectations accordingly.

I stumbled across a listing on Amazon showing that the complete Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo series will be released on Blu-ray next month.

I fucking loved this show growing up and I still enjoy watching clips from time to time. I'm real excited for this because the show's criminally underrated and becoming increasingly difficult to find on the Internet.

I remember the Saturday nights I spent watching Bobobo. Have you read the manga, too?

Sorta? I tried reading the Viz translation of the manga (this was before I knew about fan translation sites so at the time it was all I had) and for some fucking reason they started the first volume during the Cyber City arc which was a good halfway through the series. Viz bungled it up pretty bad. Plus I kinda prefer the anime since the comedy works better in motion as opposed to the still pictures of the manga.

That's true, but there are some things that never got animated/were changed. Softon originally had a brown head, and eventually Beauty got her own power. But I agree, Viz dropped the ball on that account.

NO FUCKING WAY.

My prayers have been answered, God bless you, Discotek Media. I was so pissed to know the DVDs were basically out-of-print, and the one copy my brothers claimed to have seen still in cellophane they didn't even buy, so all I've relied on was what was on KissAnime.

I need to get my hands on it, then I can die happy.

@Duncan Hills Coffee @Kari Kamiya be aware that SDBD stands for Standard Definition on Blu-ray Disc. These are DVD quality.

Eh, I don't mind. I figured everything Toei has made before the 2010s can't ever be Blu-Ray quality because they're a bunch of fuck-ups. If the files that're on KissAnime are DVD rips, those looked real nice, and Discotek probably got their hands on that, and I'm okay with that. I'm just happy Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo got rescued.
