I just watched Blue Submarine No. 6 after seeing a video of it pop up in my recommended feed.

It was short, some stuff was left unexplained (What's with the little girl? Was she psychic or something?) but overall it was a very unique and trippy ride that was pretty emotional at times.

Also started watching Great Teacher Onizuka and I kinda like what I saw so far.

The anime I always recommend is the R.O.D: Read or Die OVA and it's follow up TV series R.O.D The TV.

The simplest way to describe it is it's anime crossed with British spy fiction and "telefantasy" ala Doctor Who.

The OVA stars a sexy librarian type girl with the power to control paper the way Magneto controls metal, who tries to save the world from an army of cloned historical geniuses up to no good, the TV series follows 3 Hong Kong kung fu fighting sisters named after Maggie Cheung, Michelle Yeoh and Anita Mui with the same paper manipulation powers and their adventures with the best friend of the sexy librarian girl from the OVA.

I fucking love it, it's my personal favorite anime franchise, I especially love the English dub of the TV series, which is phenomenally good and features mostly actors who didn't do a whole lot of other anime, so it sounds very unique.

It really breaks my heart Read or Die never quite reached the popularity it should have, the OVA was fairly well known for a while as it aired on Adult Swim, but not as many people were aware of the TV series which aired on G4 instead, it's begging for rediscovery.

The Hellsing TV series does one really interesting thing and that's in it the Hellsing Organization is more of a police force with Alucard as more of a "last resort" back up, which wasn't really the case in the manga and OVAs.

I think the TV series is pretty good and still worth watching, especially for the dub, which was brought to us by the same guy and studio that did R.O.D The TV's dub.
ROD TV was one of the ones I caught in G4, but it took over a year between seasons to air and I thought the anime had been canceled midstory lol

Oh boy, I remember that really confused and upset me when they just suddenly stopped airing new episodes.

But that just led me to buying the DVDs, so it all worked out.

Wasn't Bayonetta in ROD?

Is The Twelve Kingdoms worth a watch? It looks interesting I like that the lead looks like a modern day Gerudo

Yes, the actress who voiced Bayonetta also voiced a character in R.O.D The TV.

In a way it's a shame G4 is what aired R.O.D The TV, had Adult Swim aired it instead, since they aired the OVA, it probably would have been seen by more people and would probably be considered a classic today and well remembered like Fullmetal Alchemist is.

On the other hand, I'm really glad I bought the DVDs, which might not have happened had it not been for G4's weird scheduling, I just wish somehow more people knew about it because it's so fucking great and I want more.

The DVDs came with these little booklets with thoughts by the writer and creator as well as the character designer and in the final volume they teased the potential of a Read or Die movie, which it seems like the potential money for that project went to "Welcome To The Space Show" instead which I can only assume flopped (I've never seen it)

It just sucks, man, why didn't they go with a R.O.D movie?

Sorry for not responding, took me a minute to gather my thoughts and consult my roommate on her thoughts about some of what we're shaky on.

>not finished Hellsing Ultimate (plans to drop)
>queued Hellsing the Series

Why. How. That's not normal.
IDK, we haven't really watched something that runs as long as an episode of Hellsing Ultimate and we've been watching it subbed with a really shitty font (don't ask why, we've been staying away from dubs for some reason and I'm not sure why.) The fat nazi dude talks way too much from what she says.

That aside, I recommend Trigun, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni.
Lol, I forgot Gurren Lagann, we were into it for awhile but we lost interest after the timeskip. Neither of us could really stand Nia and given we kinda hated the way Samurai Jack ended, I doubt either of us would have enjoyed the ending.

I was 99% sure I wasn't going to like Konosuba before I watched it. Got hooked immediately. I'd give it a shot.
Oh, I personally love it, it's made me laugh like nothing else has in recent years. I listed it as a maybe because some of the humor really isn't her kind of thing, but I'll give it a shot.

If you like hip-hop (not sure since you said Afro Sam was "meh") you could give Samurai Champloo a go.
Well, it depends. Afro Samurai was beautiful and it's soundtrack is great, but the story is kinda weak (great concept imo) and the much advertised Samuel L. Jackson was kind of misused. We expected a Pulp Fiction-esque type thing but a quiet role where he speaks maybe three words an episode isn't really his strong suit, and his weird delusion honestly could have been played by any hyperactive black dude.

If you want more horror after Ghost stories, there's Another, which is really good. I also enjoyed the episodes of Chrono Crusade that I saw. A nun with a demon familiar hunt down and exorcise demons.
Oh, she loves horror and slasher type shit. Any more recommendations would be welcome.

Since you guys seem to be men of culture as well and enjoy mecha, I'd get into Patlabor. The ova series is good if you like 80's anime with quirky humor but the film is kino. It was directed by Mamoru Oshii, the same guy that directed GitS. He also made another film in the 80's called Angel's Egg. It's one of my favorites but it's weird, just to give you a heads-up.
Based, that's going in the cue.

Oh, and just for the sake of brevity cause this post is getting kinda long, I'll give ROD a shot, @Dom Cruise, it sounds interesting.

The Nazi's a ham who loves to hear himself give bombastic speeches. That's why lol.

Chrono Crusade isn't a horror/slasher anime despite having demons. If you want that, Devilman is what you want. As well as any horror OVAs from the '80s and '90s if you think she'll put up with their sexual nature.

Oh, Lily C.A.T. is a movie you can try out to see if that's what you're looking for. Bit of a shame you've been avoiding dubs since that movie has some stellar casting, but I dunno what the sub for it sounds like lol. Watched it dubbed so I could take in the visuals as well as hear Gennai from Digimon say "I'm getting too old for this kind of shit".

Oh, I didn't mean to come across as though we've blanket banned dubs or anything. We're currently watching Gundam dubbed because it sounds like a bad episode of Star Trek: TOS and hearing Brad Swaile outside of Death Note is always a treat, unless it's something like that one Transformers show he did, dubbed Fullmetal's a must, we've been alternating between dubbed and subbed Bobobo just because both are great in their own right, and Yu Yu Hakusho is something we're going to rewatch dubbed soon, as a matter of fact. Fist of the North Star's worth a watch, Lex Lang's Kenshiro is laughably great even if it's only 36 episodes.

It's mostly just shaky or otherwise middling dubs kinda ruining the experience, like Soul Eater (personally can't STAND Brittany Karbowski's Black Star, too forced and without as much effort as the rest of the cast), or just things sounding off in English, like Jojo, we stopped watching the dub of Stardust Crusaders after the first season just because it doesn't really flow as well, not to mention it almost feels halfassed compared to Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency. Only certain series are worth the dub, like Code Geass or Cowboy Bebop, but I'd be willing to check it out.

As for the sex stuff, the more awkward, the better. She finds animated porn laughable and Bible Black is shit she's got on DVD. An actual show would be right up her alley.

Oh, then if you haven't, you definitely have to watch Legend of the Overfiend--dubbed, for sure. That's a real treat, it's better with friends.

Man Toonami's lineup is rather weak

Is this the most Isekai show ever?

I was looking up info and concept art on the proposed but yet to be made Despera, which was the spiritual successor to Serial Experiments Lain by the same creative team.

And fuck, it looks fucking awesome, basically if Serial Experiments Lain was Cyberpunk, Despera would have been a Steampunk take on a similar idea starring a similar looking girl.

Why the hell didn't it get made? Well one reason is that I learned the director of Serial Experiments Lain actually passed away in 2013, which I never knew and that just sucks, but hopefully Despera can still get made at some point.

They had a good run but maybe after 20+ years anime on Toonami/Adult Swim needs to be retired?

Obviously there's a lot of sentimental value but logically who really wants to watch anime on live US television where it has to be edited for content and you have to watch commercials? Time and technology has simply moved on I feel.
