Placing my bets on angry yaoi/yuri fan(s) or someone has held a very strong grudge over Nichijou not getting a second season.
They're saying the guy's in his 40s, so while it could have been a disgruntled otaku with a hard on for lolis (or one with a strong hatred for the studio), it easily could have been a pissed-off former employee, over the hill street punk looking to cause trouble, or terrorist.

I'm just worried about the families that have to deal with the fact their loved ones are either dead or unable to work for a while.

It would be interesting if this was done by some wash-up from within the anime/manga/light novel industry.
But I'm afraid it's likely going to be some crazed otaku nobody. And then the prejudice against otaku that started with Tsutomu Miyazaki will get worse again. :(

Cowboy Bebop worth a watch? Faye in it a lot?
I'm not big on space stuff but I've heard its basically Western/Lupin but in space

I like Noir so I will probably like this too lol

DVD set is cheaper but should I go bluray instead?

I only have the ancient Bandai Entertainment DVDs of Cowboy Bebop and don't feel the need to buy it again but here's a DVD to Blu-Ray comparison.

I think there's a slight bump up in overall visual quality on Blu-Ray (keeping in mind I'm only watching a Youtube video on a laptop), though some of the colours actually look better on the DVD. The Blu-Rays feature commentary on select episodes from director Shinichiro Watanabe and some other crew members if that's important to you.
