So the general consensus is Evangelion has always had a rocky relationship with the States because localizing it was a huge pain in the ass and its licensing was always a financial nightmare so that's why it had gone out-of-print and Sentai wasn't renewing its license for over a decade. Meanwhile, Rebuild counts as a separate IP and Funimation hasn't been juggling it up to Khara's standards, so now they're being control freaks over it.

And this is why weebs are pirates. Yar.

Yup. Sailor Moon has had the messiest history in terms of its release in the United States. When Sailor Moon disappeared in the States altogether back in 2004, I spent ALL of that time downloading videos of the Japanese Region 2 DVDs that fans subtitled themselves.

And now that Sailor Moon is on Blu-Ray in the States? Yeah, I bought them, but I still have my downloaded files from over 10 years ago because it's BETTER QUALITY than the Blu-Rays we were given ... Which is infuriating.

Granted, watching anime is much easier now than it was back in the 90s, but damn it ... It's still messy to get the shows you want a lot of the time.

I hate how lazy licensors have gotten over the years. If this is how Viz is treating Sailor Moon, I'm actually questioning what the Ranma 1/2 Blu-Rays are like and if I made the right call tracking down the DVD box sets. The DVDs are of good quality, but they have a disclaimer inside all the covers that goes, "Obtained from the original source in Japan, the video masters used to make this DVD are the best available. Although the small glitches contained within do not reflect the full potential of the DVD format, they were in fact unavoidable if this box set were to be released. Thank you."

That was almost 20 years ago. There should be no excuse nowadays to churn out shitty quality Blu-Rays unless the producers were shoddy with their masters. Toei's not great when it comes to treating their masters right, but if they had good quality footage of Sailor Moon way back in the day, then did Viz get those sources or no? How in the world did they fuck it up converting it into 1080p quality?

To give Viz the benefit of the doubt, Toei screwed them over with the footage they gave them to work with.

In 2005ish, the series was remastered and released on DVD in Japan (in these absolutely gorgeous boxed sets, too). Then, they released the series again on DVD in 2009 (as less of a "collector's item," if you will), and the picture quality on the 2009 DVDs, for some reason, is not that good at all. They oversaturated the colors and the picture quality, which made the show look all pixel-y and shit. Sadly, when Toei let Viz get the license, the 2009 footage is what was given to Viz. Viz tried their best to fix that footage and I think they did an admirable job ... But it's still leaving quite a bit to be desired compared to other releases.

Rumor has it that Toei gave Viz that footage because they were working on a high quality Blu-Ray set themselves, and they didn't want the "first perfect HD Sailor Moon release" to be in America.

I swear ... If Sailor Moon gets released AGAIN on Blu-Ray, and it's the GOOD Japanese remasters, I'm going to download the fuck out of it and not buy it. No way in hell am I spending all of that money again.

I wouldn't doubt those Ranma 1/2 DVD's were using the 90's masters Viz had since those older VHS releases.

But who is best grill?

If so, that's some really good VHS quality.
Interesting, I always thought the VHS Ranma tapes weren't quite up to snuff when DVD's came about and the need to make new transfers came about.

I'm not even a weeb and even I can relate to this. Funimation's releases of Dragon Ball Z are downright baffling. The original show was released as 4:3, but the DVDs are 16:9, and they accomplish this by zooming and cropping the shit out of the image, and quite frankly it just looks wrong since you know the show was never originally shown like that. And what sucks is that every now and then they try re-releasing the original aspect ratio but then abruptly stop before doing the widescreen shit.

It doesn't make the show unwatchable, but it's certainly not good. Some scenes are flat out butchered, like the scene where Piccolo grabs Nappa's tail and gets elbowed in the head. The DVD's so zoomed in you don't even see it in action, only the aftermath.

I just don't understand the point of Frankensteining the image to make it widescreen. And it's bizarre because DBZ is pretty much the most famous anime, but the official DVD releases are pretty shoddy when you get right down to it.

So apparently there is an anime apocalypse going on right now on YouTube or something? I was watching a Metekour stream and he mentioned it and I had no idea what he was talking about.

Is this about anime YouTubers, or are channels uploading anime OVAs (which are usually unlicensed btw) getting copyright claimed by Japanese companies? I know ShoPro has been going after Pokémon videos lately, but they've always been doing that.

Are the Viz Sailor Moon bluray worth it? I have the complete S series Pioneer released, and the two ADV ADV boxset with extremely shitty audio.

Discotek is finally releasing the Wizard of Oz and in Japanese.

The Khara thing was something that was making the rounds on twitter and dont have in hand right now, but apparently the problem was that people is used to old ass 20 years subtitles/dub scripts and the new one was made from scratch with a new translator , sadly if i try to recover the source i just get tons of tons of links calling Netflix homophobic again and again

As i have tell everyone that have asked, no, the goddamn subtitles are not censored, "like" and "love" is practically spelled the same, but people is used to the "love" line because that is was the thing that everyone know from the old dubs (even the latin american has it) in further material the relationship of the both is "almost" homo but Shinji almost always end killing him or Kaworu end death, i think that is Anno way to just not give the damn fujos more to work with it, also Shinji being super gay was retconned by Anno in The end of evangelion where is practically stated that he wanted to bone Misato, then retconned again in Rebuild and throwed out of the window by Bampresto, want to see how gay Shinji is? read Evangelion Anima, Shinji become a swagger that get chicks and get the job done, play Super robot taisen V were he get so pissed when Asuka is in danger that go full super mode screaming his lungs out manly style to save her (and is not only in this game, he grow balls in every instance because he has other pilots that actually care about him and teach him the ways, in Alpha was Bright noah, in V was Nagare Ryouma and Tetsuya Tsurugi, in others he even have Noriko from Gunbuster and Simon fron Gurren laggan, even Banagher links become his friend in some games and both are best buddies)

Also check the replies to the poor guy, is just troons insulting and telling the guy to kill himself because one line, back in the day we just only release a patch for the mkv and get over with it (not that we cared about their opinion anyway)

Im going to try again to find a verified and not stupid source of the Khara thing

I personally think there was never really any agency to suggest Kaworu's gay. Kaworu is another being's soul melded into human form, but what is there to suggest that they even regard gender so strongly as to be identified as homosexual? Not in the same way that some hideous troons disregard gender to make up their own cosmopolitan identities, but as a creature that is so divorced from human culture and our ways of thinking to be its observer? To me it just seems like crude, premature labelling.

I used to have the ADV Boxed Sets of the first two seasons as well ... They were the WORST. But ... They were the best we had at the time, right? lol.

In my opinion, I say you absolutely need to get the first season and Sailor Moon R from Viz Media's release to replace the ADV ones. They are infinitely better. There are still some episodes missing from the ADV sets, too. Granted, they're filler episodes, but if you want the whole show ... Then absolutely go with the Viz releases.

I also used to have the Pioneer DVDs of the S and SuperS seasons, but I sold them on eBay for literally hundreds of dollars because I was getting ready to buy the Viz Blu-Rays, haha (ALL of the old releases of Sailor Moon in America are now sought after collector's items, even the shitty ADV ones). I'd say that if you really want to save money, then the Pioneer DVDs are perfectly fine to still own unless you want the new English dub. To my understanding, there are some cropping issues with the Pioneer DVDs (so you technically don't get the "full" picture), but it's hardly noticeable.

So far, the best Viz release has been SuperS though. I think the picture quality is actually pretty great for that season, plus you get the "lost TV Specials" that were never previously released in the States. There's a short about Haruka and Michiru, which is a ton of fun.

Viz sells standard DVDs too, FYI. The Blu-Rays have prettier packaging, and some extra bells and whistles, but if we're just talking about audio and picture quality, then I think you are completely fine with just getting the regular DVDs. They're exponentially cheaper than the Blu-Ray/DVD combo sets.

In the original anime it was not as blatant, the context was there but their relationship was not explored further because Shinji kill him, the only thing that i understood is that he was the only one that actually gave a crap about him ,Misato is only with him to keep him on check, Ritsuko only see him as Gendou's son, Rei is well.. her and Asuka is just a mental trainwreck that she only see him as a tool to get glory and praise (she fails spectacularly on that) mind you Kaworu appears just after tokyo 3 get obliterated after the battle vs Armisael so Shinji did not have any friends left at this point and was a mental wreck

Then GAINAX being GAINAX noticed how the ship was popular and decide to just roll with it without outright telling it for that filthy fujoshi dosh, i mean thing like this is OFFICIAL merchandise

Sadly for the shippers officially Shinji is straight, in official spin offs and materials he get chicks, and in Anima he sport his pussy slayer hair

Well, he DID jerk the gherkin to a pair of anime titties, fantasised about the three main ladies of his life when absorbed, and before that had a boner over Misato and Asuka...

But apart from that, I've always thought of him caring about Kaworu for the same reasons - that Kaworu's a nice, friendly person who was genuinely interested in understanding Shinji and hadn't truly done anything wrong by him (apart from withholding the fact that he was an Angel). Following his self-sacrifice, it isn't difficult to follow that Shinji felt bad for killing someone who had only ever been a good person to him, and not because Kaworu infected him with T3H G4YZ.
