Discovered the manga “Kuro” today. It’s equal parts adorable and horrifying.

Yeah, I completely lost interest after the timeskip.

Time skips are terrible 99% of the time. I think the only good example I can think of is for one tragedy manga I was reading where the point of it was to show that the characters ultimately learned nothing.

The problem with AoT's timeskip is that it is basically the second father's basement. It basically shrouded tons of character's motives in mystery, which forces the story backwards. You're not really progressing, because you have no idea why the characters are doing what they're doing. I honestly don't know how anyone reads this shit, because no one except a handful of characters have any clear or sensible motives.

You only do time-skips at two places in a story: the beginning or the end. You don't timeskip the middle because you basically disrupt characterization and you have to go back and explain everything. The story hasn't yet started, nor has it ended. So you end up with Eren being 'wut' for chapter after chapter after chapter. His motives are still unclear and if its 'mind control', laziest plot ever. Or 'I'm gonna be the supervillian that unites the world' which is equally ret.arded.

Its just really bad writing. It saddens me that it feels like he had this great idea, but just tripped over the mystery of it and went with what he liked instead of what would serve the story and audience. Do we really need yet ANOTHER world war 2 analogy story with game of thrones bullshit? No. It was far more interesting when you had this pitched battle for survival and knowing its going from this otherworldly horror to...whatever the fuck it is now destroyed any desire to continue. I just read spoilers, I don't even read the fucking thing any more. Though I have to admit I completely skipped Zekes backstory because I don't give a fuck and I

You got hints there was another world out there, but turns out it was just more humans and boring. I was expecting floating cities and freakish shit. But nah, World War 2 with GoT.

Sometimes adaptions need to go their own directions, and AoT the anime definitely does. I have no fucking clue how the anime is going to survive the massive tonal shift otherwise. But I think the author is too involved for that, so its going to be more of the same shit. I don't really think the viewer base who doesn't know what's coming will be ready for it. Most people, except a handful of hardcore fans, seem to just be reading it out of the time they invested in it.

You had this beautiful horror and mystery and you just fuck it up with stupid shit. Sad. As an aside, I really, really fucking loathe stories that radically change their tone for little to no reason and ruin the entire thing because of it.

Timeskips are almost always resets. And if your story is on track, why?

Concur about timeskips at the end. There's a heartbreaking one at the end of I'll Try My Best... Tomorrow.

Just the Japanese fans. They like both SEED and SEED Destiny and regard them as the best series of the franchise.
Original UC story is better in every way. 00 is also great.

I remember when SEED Destiny came out, western fans just tore into that one like paper, I remember someone in a podcast listing off a lot of problems he saw in the series, that was like 13-14 years ago.

It was so dramatic I thought it was some spanish novela. Both sides of the conflict were shit heads. it was just god awful and embarrassing to watch. No Gundam pilot was cool or interesting in it. Kira was a goody too shoes whose plot armor was way overdone, Athruns personality was cardboard, and god, Shinn Asuka was a annoying edgy shitbag.

Original UC was always good minus most of the OVAs. 00 Season 1 was pretty bland until the end where the Team Trinity speeds up the world unification plan by just starting shit and making everyone extra mad at Gundams. The pilots were all fairly boring with the exception of Setsuna with his occasional Gundam autism attack. Season 2 seems mildly more interesting so far with world unification achieved. Everyone being alive at the end with the exception of two bridge characters nobody ever gave a fuck about, the ships doctor who I don't even remember being a person until the end, and Lockon feels pretty cheap though.
Also finished Unicorn which was 7 hours of boredom, 45 minutes of laughing at the entire ending. Started AGE, but too early to form an opinion on really.

I finally got around to watching Little Witch Academia, and it's so cute! I love the setting and how the magic works, and Akko's dopiness is really endearing. It's a very good series and I can't wait for more.

Posting right now to be my marker that I am starting my first step into the Saint Seiya franchise in a few minutes. Should be an exciting journey.

EDIT: I like that it's been non-stop action since its beginning. Like it's just episode one and just from the setting alone I'm questioning why it's Knights of the Zodiac instead of Spartans of the Zodiac lol. The ear being sliced off was pretty fucking metal, though.

And it's called knights of the zodiac probably because later on, there will be knights that represent the 12 constellations of the zodiac. (also the character in my avatar is the coolest mofo in the show, you'll see)

Either way the show really picks up right before the sanctuary arc, because at the beginning is pretty meh and generic. Also The soundtrack is really fucking good.

little bit of trivia: The Italian dub is considered by many (at least people who have seen it :p) on par with the original jap dub (and by some even better), only faults it has, is that it changes some of the story elements and names and some voices are changed from one episode to another, along with the fact that some voice Actors end up playing more than one character. The acting and the complexity of the dialogues is really fucking good.

it's only violent like that in the 80's anime.The Hades OVAs(produced in 2002.Yeah,they took THAT long to animate the final arc...) toned it down a lot.

the animation is also subpar in hades. overall it was pretty disappointing, like almost all follow ups of animes from the 80s, made in the 2000s.

The beginning is the best part imo. Should've ended and move on after the Athena arc.

When it comes to the media I've been enjoying lately, I've been into sci-fi adventure stuff. Just finished rewatching Firefly and Cowboy Bebop ...

So, naturally, I decided to watch Outlaw Star. I honestly have not watched the series in its entirety before; just a few bits and pieces when it was on Toonami WAY back when (almost 20 years ago at this point, lol).

Anyway, it's been a fun series so far. The show looks gorgeous, too (especially in HD). The use of vibrant colors just makes the series look very pleasant to look at. Good stuff.

Most UC fans will tell you that Unicorn was bad. And I agree with that sentiment. I ignore it but now that NT is coming out we are reminded of its existence. I just want Gundam thunderbolt:bandit flower to continue (unfortunately it's not iirc) .
I didn't mind the old ovas. War in the pocket felt comfy in a way. Idky but it came off as warm and innocent as shit. IGLOO was a neat idea but executed badly. The F91 movie and crossbones was great too. 08th ms team is a classic and stardust memory was good for lazy Saturday nights. I still need to play the games since they're canon to the OYW time line like MsG:Blue Destiny I also want to read MsG:The Blazing Shadow

You might wanna check out Planetes if you haven't already. It's a hard-sci-fi show in a not-so-distant future where the moon has been colonized and people regularly travel to space stations around earth or live there and work various jobs.
The show is literally about garbage men in space, who collect space debris from orbits around earth, since it's a huge hazard for space-travel.
It's an amazing show with many funny or sad moments.

Edit:
Artdirection, animation and sound design are top notch, btw.
It's one of those shows where the vacuum of space is actually silent, execpt for those sounds that the characters could hear due to them being transmitted via contact.

I always thought Kira and Lacus were enjoyable. One is a huge mary sue and its played off like thats a huge tragedy which is hilarious. I can't say I really cared for any of those with the exception of Thunderbolt Season 1, F91, the first episode of The Origin, and Stardust Memory. Even then only Stardust Memory and some of the Origin's first episode felt like it added something nice onto the UC era. And Thunderbolt, while adding absolutely nothing of value to the existing stories in UC was basically the only one that actually did something interesting on its own with its surprisingly good characters, imagery, music, and visual style. F91 didn't really add onto UC in any meaningful way or stand very well on its own, but it did have a mix of brutal Gundam deaths which I greatly enjoyed and Iron Mask being a hilarious villain who can be summed up with:

There's also the blatant Star Wars influences which actually turned out to be a little more on the line of plagarism with the music. I genuinely thought I was listening to music from Star Wars in some scenes. The first episode of the Origin showed a little bit of Deikun Zeon which was nice as we only ever got to learn about him via propaganda and other characters. It also established the idea that the Zabi family may not have actually even killed Deikun which is pretty interesting to me. Instead it was drilled into Char's head from people like Jimba Ral that they were behind his death. This doesn't really make them any more innocent though as they benefited greatly from his death and did even more sketchy shit, but it certainly does add a bit of mystery and tragedy to Char's background.

Question for anime people. I don't care much about anime nowadays, but I kinda dug it about 20 years ago when I was in college and Toonami was hot shiz and all that. Looking at today's stuff, though, it doesn't much appeal to me. Is there a streaming service which has stuff from the '70s-'90s? I'm aware of CrunchyRoll, but from what I remember of the last time I checked it out, it didn't have anything older than ten years or so. Netflix had Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (which is amazing) and Robotech, but nothing old besides that that I'm aware of. (Seeing that clip of Armitage III in the Vic Mignogna thread brought this about. I think I've seen that series, though I don't remember anything about it.)

Yeah, I know I can probably find torrents on shady sites, but I'm too old for that crap.
