Digimon is still a thing?

Well of course, Bandai's not letting that franchise die a dignified death, not while it still makes them money. Only thing that's of note to mention about this new movie/series is that the father of Digimon and screenwriter of the first two seasons, Hiroyuki Kakudou, left the project because a plot-point or something was approved of behind his back that he feels contradicts the lore.

Yeah. Not a good sign.

We get to see the rest of the cast's designs for the new Digimon movie/series:

jaja is Toei trying to brush the horrible abomination that was Tri? at least they polished the designs to look more like the originals (yeah Digimon is well know here, more than Pokemon because it was aired in Public TV)

More like I think they owe it to Tri for milking all the nostalgia bux from the fans so they could make another interquel. Whether it's a continuation, we don't know the details yet outside of Kakudou bailing out.

But I agree the designs are much more appealing (though I only really like Kari, T.K. and Joe here tbh). Which is funny because Uki Atsuya doesn't have a bad character design (see Tsuritama, Cencoroll), but Toei fucked it up because of course they did (and most of the animation was outsourced anyway, shows you how much Toei truly cared). Besides, Atsuya does better monster designs than humans anyway.

(Lol whoops, sorry 'bout the sperging.)

So I take it Digimon has faced the same fate as The Simpsons?

I don't know if I would compare Digimon to The Simpsons, to be frank, given how extremely different the two series are. Digimon was created to sell toys, Simpsons was created to sell an idea. One was meant for kids, the other for adults. One exploded in popularity over the other as well as leaving a mark on pop culture. One has been consistently on the air since it first appeared, the other had upwards of three-year breaks between seasons because reception turned out to be poor. Meanwhile, one has had some success outside of its home country, but it's otherwise struggled and consistently was marketed to different demographics over the years in attempt to be fresh.

I say this as someone who loves Digimon, but it needs to take a rest. It used to take rests. Whether that's helped contribute to each new season being less and less popular, I'm not sure, but at the very least, unlike with The Simpsons, Digimon has always tried something new with each new season, and new series of games. Tri was literally created out of nostalgia because Adventure is the most popular, the biggest moneymaker of the franchise, but what promised to return to dropped plot-lines (well, to bridge the gap and explain why the DigiDestined chose their futures as shown in the 02 epilogue) while having a new plot and bring maturity in having the original DigiDestined grow up to better relate to the audience, Tri turned out to be a hot mess that hardly introduced anything new to the franchise. I don't know the general consensus with Japanese fans, but it made a shit-ton of money over there so I guess it's well-liked. But outside of Japan, it's a mixed-bag. You got people who like it from beginning to end, others who only like some of it, and others who despise it. There's many factors that led to this, anywhere from the characters, to the animation, to the story. Meanwhile, the dub choosing to stick as close to the original script as possible also helped cause rifts with dub fans because of how different it felt to the Saban dub (it's honestly kind of awkward).

Tri was also hinted at to have had a troubled production, as it felt like it being a six-part film series was a last-minute thing. Seriously, Tri should've just been a TV series and that would've been fine even with the same writing, because at least it wouldn't have taken three long years to complete just to end with a big "Hey, so you don't know who I am as Not-Gennai, but remember Demon? And Diaboromon? Hope you enjoyed the mystery of the missing 02 kids we just conveniently forgot about this whole time! Fuck you, give us money ;D!" It was just exhausting, and to announce a new movie or whatever shortly afterward that still focuses on the Adventure kids is just another big "fuck you, give us money" slap to the face because everyone would rather prefer a new Tamers over Adventure, if only to just give it a rest and focus on something else for a while. But Tamers probably wouldn't benefit any better with a Tri-esque sequel.

Really, Digimon has been treated as well as Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya at this point, and that's where the bulk of the frustration lies. Yes, Digimon was meant to sell toys and merchandise, but the anime tried to hide this with relatable character development, great storytelling that had a beginning and an end (something not even Pokémon has), and a rich, rich lore that differed between seasons but it's still implied all seasons are connected in some way or another thanks in part to the quantum sea (it's actually a really interesting, cool idea that doesn't get enough attention--Tri brought it up at long last, but hardly did anything with it). That's why it's such a special franchise to a lot of people, and Tri missed the mark for a lot of people.

(And the less said about the shipping, the better, even though Toei were purposefully fanning the flames the whole time.)

Xros Wars was a disappointment, but I hear Applimon, which was released just a couple of years ago, is actually a pretty good show once you get past the first several episodes--like always. It's Digimon tradition to start out slow.

Digimon, but it needs to take a rest. It used to take rests.

It never take a rest, is only that Bandai like to keep pushing Digimon but in less obvious way like more merchandising like Video games or Mangas (there is a case where a MC of a Videogame was so insanely popular that they had to create a entire plot point to make him appear in Digimon 03 tl;dr he crossed dimensions) the thing is like always that merchadising is obscure to people outside of Japan because they are never translated

Tri was literally created out of nostalgia because Adventure is the most popular

And it was not the first time, they released a PSP game pretty much covering the first season for the heck of it, it was fan translated iirc

but what promised to return to dropped plot-lines (well, to bridge the gap and explain why the DigiDestined chose their futures as shown in the 02 epilogue) while having a new plot and bring maturity in having the original DigiDestined grow up to better relate to the audience

To those who dont want to deal with the first season one of the dropped plot points was the identity of the first DigiDestined (or Chosen Childrens in the latin dub), the hilarious thing is that this plot point is just for a second and happen in only one episode as a almost irrelevant commentary, they decide to bring it back but putting the retarding thing about the resets to the digital world, the thing just get more awful from there

. I don't know the general consensus with Japanese fans, but it made a shit-ton of money over there so I guess it's well-liked. But outside of Japan, it's a mixed-bag

Japan thought it was "ok", not groundbreaking of anything but hey they got more Digimon Adventure, outside is... weird, in Latin America for example people believe it was boring because they nuked the guys from Digimon 02 for those who dont know, Digimon was insanely popular here in the age of cable it was broadcasted by Fox Kids (now Disney XD) and the premiere of Digimon 02 is one of the most remembered in the fandom, Pokemon people did not give to much of a shit because it was broadcast by Cartoon Network and they took they sweet ass time to release new episodes that and the changes from Japan----USA were felt (Even when Crunchyroll put in the subs the localized names but in the audio it was different) did not help in the popularity of Tri

Tri was also hinted at to have had a troubled production, as it felt like it being a six-part film series was a last-minute thing.

The most weird part is that the version we got was in series format, when the movie was released in japan we got the episodes cutted in Crunchyroll

"Hey, so you don't know who I am as Not-Gennai, but remember Demon? And Diaboromon? Hope you enjoyed the mystery of the missing 02 kids we just conveniently forgot about this whole time! Fuck you, give us money ;D!"

This pretty much confirm the meme that Bandai did not like 02 for some reason, they were put there because the timeline practically demand it

everyone would rather prefer a new Tamers over Adventure

>Not saying Digimon Frontier

Come on you know you want to shit on it, the only heresy that Tamers created was creating a generation of furries that liked Renamon, other season of FUCKING MASARU PUNCHING DIGIMONS AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT is what we need to heal the wounds of tri

Really, Digimon has been treated as well as Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya at this point,

Sailor Moon at least got a anime that is more close to the manga, Fans of saint seiya are now hunting Eugene son to kill him for multiples heresies, i think one of the most battered fandoms out there is the one from Full metal panic that got a anime that did not cover all the fuck awesome things that happen

(And the less said about the shipping, the better, even though Toei were purposefully fanning the flames the whole time.)

Fucking hell you had to remind me that, it doesnt help that those two have a digivolution together

Xros Wars was a disappointment, but I hear Applimon, which was released just a couple of years ago, is actually a pretty good show once you get past the first several episodes--like always. It's Digimon tradition to start out slow.

Xros Wars was not TERRRIIIBLLEE per se, it was lame because it ditched basic mechanics like Digivolutions to make the MC spam Xros because reasons, apparently they noticed how retarded that was and normal digivolutions came back to quote a friend of mine:

They wanted to make this with Digimons

I've come to warm up to Ryo after reading about what happened in the WonderSwan games and why it is he showed up in the anime. It's an unfortunate case of just not having certain merchandise being exported, which sucks because it would've honestly helped a bit.

And it was not the first time, they released a PSP game pretty much covering the first season for the heck of it, it was fan translated iirc

Oh yeah, I remember that. That's also the first time Hackmon showed up in the series, and that's apparently the reason why Hackmon even showed up in Tri. But then they did fuck-all with him. Tri's full of "fuck-all" ideas.

It had long been confirmed in the light novels that Kakudou wrote, but again, they never made it out of Japan and was only discovered by a non-Japanese fan a few years ago. And far as I can tell, the person who's in the middle of translating the novels hasn't finished the third one yet, which is where it was confirmed.

Japan thought it was "ok", not groundbreaking of anything but hey they got more Digimon Adventure, outside is... weird, in Latin America for example people believe it was boring because they nuked the guys from Digimon 02 for those who dont know, Digimon was insanely popular here in the age of cable it was broadcasted by Fox Kids (now Disney XD) and the premiere of Digimon 02 is one of the most remembered in the fandom, Pokemon people did not give to much of a shit because it was broadcast by Cartoon Network and they took they sweet ass time to release new episodes that and the changes from Japan----USA were felt (Even when Crunchyroll put in the subs the localized names but in the audio it was different) did not help in the popularity of Tr

It's really nice to get word of Latin American fans' take on Tri. The Tumblr tag had a lot of them but their posts weren't written in English so I couldn't tell what they thought of it. Most other people mentioned it was boring as well, so I'm just happy to know I wasn't the only one who felt that way, but I was just more disappointed and frustrated with the whole thing in general. Like it was good, at first, but it fell apart after the reset button was pushed. I actually got really pissed off by it because it nearly killed off Gatomon for good because her character relied so heavily on the fact she was raised differently from the other DigiDestined partners. And Kari had the fucking gull to say it was better that she didn't remember her sad past. She was literally okay with her Digimon being a completely different person as long as it meant she didn't remember everything.

Fuck off with that shit.

The most weird part is that the version we got was in series format, when the movie was released in japan we got the episodes cutted in Crunchyrol

This confused the hell out of me, I don't know why they did this. But the way they cut it practically helped in my belief that it really should have just been a TV series and nothing would've changed.

Then again, Digimon always has had shitty pacing.

>Not saying Digimon Frontier

I'm one of the few that actually likes the idea of Frontier lol. But Frontier was also another season that had a plot-line of the Royal Knights going fucking nowhere. Like what the hell, why haven't the Royal Knights been given the proper attention they deserve? That was one of the many hopes that would get addressed in Tri, but they dropped it along with the Dark Ocean plot-point.

Just what the fuck, Toei, Bandai?

Sailor Moon at least got a anime that is more close to the manga,

Yes, but it was boring. The first Crystal anime being a biweekly release didn't help--I got in when it was over halfway finished and that was a pain to wait every other week. I salute everyone who actually stuck with Crystal from day one.

Xros Wars was not TERRRIIIBLLEE per se, it was lame because it ditched basic mechanics like Digivolutions to make the MC spam Xros because reasons, apparently they noticed how exceptional that was and normal digivolutions came back to quote a friend of mine:

Pfffft true. I've heard more Gurren Lagann jokes than that tbh, but yeah, was a weird mechanic. The plot was also rather mediocre as well, I'm thinking the manga handled it better, so why didn't we get that plot and not because it had Wizardmon?

As disappointing as Tri and Sailor Moon Crystal were, I still have a soft spot for Digimon (both Adventure and Tamers) and Sailor Moon since they were what helped me get into anime, along with Cardcaptors.

I've not seen Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card yet, although I will probably do so over the next few days and I don't want any spoilers, which is why I have been avoiding reviews of it.

I hope that they won't drop the ball like Toei did with Digimon Adventure Tri and Sailor Moon Crystal.

Man, I used to love Digimon as a kid.

I figured season 2 would be the end of everything only for Tamers to start up immediately after the season finale, making me think

“Oh... That’s cool, I guess?”

Haven’t watched the rest, but apparently it was good.

Tri itself wasn't bad, it was just a cluster fuck of good ideas with wasted potential. So many plot points unresolved getting piled on top of each other and the ending was not at all satisfying. After a certain point I only watched it to see the rest of the mega level partner Digimon.
Maki's unresolved plot annoyed me far more than the fate of the 02 kids. Also I find it weird that there is a alternate Meicoomon Vaccine type line sitting around unused. Was it supposed to be in the final product?

Ok, the creator of To-Love-Ru and artist of Darling in the Franxx has a new manga, with a title that's uh...here's the plot:

https://mangapark.me/manga/trans-bo...reIcpc2Rg9t970Bgl-IzsFd3xJN7zbiiY4tMfShtYv40k

Sorato Kenzaki is an ordinary boy who attracts not so ordinary women. He constantly gets confessed to by weird, and often dangerous, girls. So when a rich ojou-sama asks him to become a hero he plays along and agrees. But lo and behold he actually gets transformed into a superhero!

The problem, well it could be a problem: the title. It's called:

Trans Boy. And no, it's not a gender bender or about identity stuff, he transforms into a hero. I'm pretty sure with a title like that it might get people pushed the wrong way for obvious reasons and considering this guy was involved in Darling in the Franxx and our old pal JesuOtaku calling it far right propaganda, well...yeah I'm not sure a lot of folks might not take it well.

Is the guy from To love ru, so i dont expect anything worthwhile the guy is going to be cockblocked to oblivion because apparently that sells

Another recent-ish manga with a similar title is Magical Trans but with actual gender-bending, where a high school boy joins a club and gets a special cell phone that actually transforms him into a magical girl because of nanomachines or something like that.

Today, completely out of the blue, I remembered Dennou Coil, a truly amazing and -sadly!- underappreciated anime.
It came out in 2007 and I am certain that there were only 2 things that made this absolutely stellar work fly under many an anime-fan's radar:
1) The artstyle. It's not moeblobs, so people might have overlooked it.
2) It came out the same year as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann... and let's be honest, that is some tough competition.

The story is set in a not-so-distant future where everyone uses smartglasses to interact with Augmented Reality. Yuko (far right, also called Yasako, alternate spelling of the Kanji in her name) moves to a new city with her family, there she meets Fumie (next to Yuko), she essentially ends up in a club of pupils that look for lost Cyberpets... that's at least how this story begins.

Another pupil called Yuko (far left, similarly to Yasako, she's also called Isako) enters the scene and suddenly it turns into turf wars between hackers, espionage, mysterious occurances, urban legends... I don't want to oversell the anime, but it's genuinely amazing what twists and turns this story takes and how emotional it gets at times.
One of the core aspect of the anime is that the kids use AR weapons and hacks to do certain things (such as attacking one another) and they find themselves at odds with the AR-Security bots called "Saatchi" (the bean-shaped thing in the 2nd image) and encounter so called "illegals", small, black blobs with glowing eyes that sometimes vaguely look like certain animals. They are AIs that usually live in what is called "obsolete space", outdated and buggy AR-space but noone knows where they come from and what they do.

The Show overall is a pretty ambitious mix of comedy, drama, action, mystery and sometimes even horror elements, that works absolutely flawlessly - way better, in fact, than what you'd expect. It's just so imaginative and there's a real "sense of wonder" when the kids make their discoveries. The plot structure is absolutely amazing, too, where it slowly builds up tension and mystery.

I can't recommend it enough, it has a very warmhearted style of humor, there's a few scenes that are genuinely heartbreaking and the characters and their interaction is just so much fun to watch.

Oh, and did I mention the nice OST?
