- I have seen Utena! I can't believe I didn't mention that in my post! Fucking awesome series.

-I have heard of Mawaru Penguindrum. It's from the same director as Utena, correct?

-I have seen artwork from Paradise Kiss before, and it looks gorgeous.

-I have been meaning to get into Ghost in The Shell for years. I remember seeing a few episodes of Standalone Complex and being really impressed with it way back when. I never got around to watching the whole thing though.

Any recommendations for a normie like me?

You're probably looking for "current" popular anime, but Vision of Escaflowne immediately came to mind as a good anime for normies. You're also in luck that it got itself a redub a couple of years back, unless you don't mind how it sounds. (Haven't watched the new dub yet, still a bit attached to the Ocean dub, personally.) I'm also that weirdo who'll recommend the movie as well despite how different it actually is from the TV series--if only because of Dilandau. But Escaflowne is a strange beast in that it has multiple retellings in anime and manga form and you don't feel entirely lost as a result.

Tatami Galaxy

Whoa there, that's like recommending twelfth-grade reading level book to a third grader. Amazing anime and all, but it's hard to keep up with most of the time because of their motor mouths. Gotta ease into that.

@StarkRavingMad Yes, it's from the same director (Kunihiko Ikuhara). I actually preferred Mawaru Penguindrum over Utena, although both of them are still in my top ten favorites. He also directed the first four seasons of Sailor Moon.

I didn't have any problems with it but I read faster than most people so I can see why some people may have a hard time keeping up with the dialogue, especially if they have never watched anything with subtitles before.

They’re apparently redubbing Evangelion.

I can't really complain as they kinda did a redub with the director's cut episodes (and I hope those will be on Netflix). The End of Evangelion redub (if they're doing that, too) should be a lot of fun lol. I can just see the YouTube comparison videos now.

Sadly, a legend of the "World Masterpiece Theater" set has passed away, Akira Miyazaki (not related to Hayao, just to get it out of the way).

Noticing the thumbnail ANN used reminded me this was the cartoon that caused a raccoon problem in Japan thanks to everyone thinking they made great pets, despite the story the cartoon is based on having the kid getting rid of his "Rascal" once he was older and wild.

So Netflix has been working on something for a while now.

I know this isn't the Netlix zone, but it applies.

Not liking much of the 3D.

Basically this is an adaptation of a graphic novel manga that tells an entirely different story from the TV continuity. This is basically a sequel to the OG series that treated Ultraseven and forward as non-canon. That doesn't mean that the character from other Ultra series didn't appeared: they do appear in a certain fashion. The manga is basically a Kamen Rider manga dressed as Ultraman.

Guessing from the list of the voice actor and who voice Hayata, I'm going to guess that they are banking this series to be successful enough to warrant Season 2.

It's at least as decent as the Cyborg 009 miniseries, in my opinion.

Perfect? No. But it has its good points, so I'm at least optimistic this series won't look bad as a whole. [Plus that Spacium Beam attack was so lit.]

So. I was a very casual anime fan when I was a teenager. I loved Sailor Moon as a kid, but I really view that show like I would view a nostalgic show like TMNT, Thundercats, GI Joe, or He-Man (stuff I grew up watching) rather than I view it as an anime/genre-specific thing. If that makes sense?

When I was in high school, that's when I started to branch out a little bit with anime. I saw Cowboy Bebop the very first night of Adult Swim ever (fuck, I'm old), and I immediately fell in love with that show. To this day, I will still give Bebop a rewatch, and enjoy the hell out of it. Throughout high school, I branched out to other classics like Trigun and Evangelion (and I did love those shows, too). Once I started college, though, I lost complete interest in checking out anything new.

Fast forward to now, over a decade later, and the only new anime I've checked out is Attack on Titan. I'm in the middle of the first season, and I really like it so far. However, I've been getting through the first season at a very slow pace. I've watched 13 episodes in 6 months? Haha. And because of my love for Sailor Moon, I gave Sailor Moon Crystal a chance ... But it sucked ass and pissed me off.

I guess my unpopular opinion is that there haven't been ANY new/recent anime that I've seen previews for that have immediately grabbed at me. And I do know that there's some popular stuff out there right now.

I have similar story, don't really care for anime as "genre". Watching Legend of Galactic Heroes right now and it's pretty universal, not very anime-like story. Both orginal OVa and reboot are really similar in tone and story. Only with reboot you will probably wait 10+ years until they cover full story.
If you have a nostalgia for older shows I also reccomend Mysterious Cities of Gold, it's half French but for some people still counts. Great English dub from 80s
Pretty Cure is kind of spiritular succesor to Sailor Moon, but I tried to watch it... and really don't fell that similat for me. Tried 3 times. Sailor Moon had some kind of realism (action in actual Tokio locations, girls acting natural for their age, dreamy, but not too colorful background), Precure is very colorful, girls act more like younger kids, monsters are very cartoonish, but not in humorous way.

Fair warning: rather than be about giant aliens fighting, the series now focuses on mainly human-sized aliens fighting humans in power armor, a la Iron Man, though it can also be seen as a Kamen Rider thing. If your brother needs giants fighting, he may be disappointed.

Pretty stoked for Evangelion coming out to Netflix, but if it's getting redubbed I sure hope they don't make extremely poor choices as many modern anime have made.

Might watch the Ultraman anime, but I find myself liking new anime a lot less as it tends to be of very poor quality.

Just watch the original dub, it's absolutely stellar.
Edit: Oh god, what if Netflix uses a different intro song.
