In my opinion Goblin Slayer is like some south park esque parody of what people think Berserk is entirely about. Edgelord Crossed tier RAPERAPERAPETORTURERAPERAPEDEADKIDSRAPERAPERAPE with sappy "emotional" moments scattered hap hazardly throughout, and the main pull factor seems to be "what edgelordy grimtard shit will happen next?" rather than "how is this story and these characters I care about going to evolve?". The storyline and worldbuilding and characterisations of all main characters is just so....generic. I mean if you excised the rape it would be the most forgettable and bland fantasy story imaginable.

Incidentally, despite it forming about 80% of my joke repertoire, I don't actually enjoy watching/reading about rape (unless Im masturbating ofcourse...different story then) in much the same way I dont particularly enjoy watching/reading about people taking a shit (again.....might be a different case in the fap department).

Not that its "oh so offensive" or triggering or whathaveyou, its just unpleasant to watch and is frankly a bit of a downer. That isnt to say rape doesnt have its place (lol phrasing) for example the rape scene in Berserk was the devastating culmination of three characters storylines thus far and set the stage for everything that came afterwards, and in this case the unpleasantness of the rape serves to heighten the impact of the whole betrayal of the wider event. However in fiction rape is one of those things that kinda needs to be earned to not come accross as just cheap and edgelordy masturbation by the writer. If its just crammed in to every cavity of a work and just spills out of every page/scene then that schtick is going to get old quick as the visceral punch will soon be lost and replaced with tedium.

And after reading like three volumes or such of the manga, it gets really fuckin tedious really fuckin quick. All that said however, reading the horrified REEEEEEEEEactions by the usual suspects has been a real joy

Also on non rape-goblin animeee subjects, Im marathoning the OG Dragonball again, and honestly at this point I am enjoying it more than Z. Its nice to see "minor" characters actually matter and have a purpose in the story, and the show is so cuntflayingly charming and innocent compared to the batshit planet popping that Z and Super would bring
Yeah, GS feels like it tries to do some Cargo Cult Berserk storyline with a bit more humor thrown in. The MCs background is shoved into a few pages at the beginning of the Manga, and the whole thing does the bare minimum to explain the setting.
I guess it's just a means to get to the action quicker, so I doubt it's the writers inability to write and more that he doesn't want to explore any of this any deeper. It's an action flick and nothing more.
Not like that makes it any less watchable, it's just not going to make much of a lasting impact, I guess.

And concerning DB, I agree. The old show has something endearing to it, where the characters train and do stuff, Son Goku might still be the strongest that gets shit done, but the others don't feel like cheerleaders yet and the plot is a lot more funny and entertaining. Going from "weird company tries to take over the world by force" to "weird space empire tries to take over the galaxy by force" is kind of a natural progression and Z had its moments, but overall, the best moments are during the times when Son Goku is still a kid, as far as I'm concerned.

Personally I just imagined Goblin Slayer's lines being read by Alex Jones and it all became a touch more readable

That being said, I have to criticize the Manga for it's tone. On one hand, it tries to be a grim and dark fantasy tale like Berserk, but then it gives you whiplash by immediately trying to be funny. The priestesswatches the sorceress being shanked and her body being almost violated, the sword dude being hacked to pieces and the kung-fu girl that gets beaten to a pulp and raped... and then the next time we see her, she's all cheery and buddy-buddy with the Goblin Slayer in the Quest-Giver-Headquarter thingy.
There's a point where Goblin Slayer rambles on about why he thinks Goblins attack humans (ie: Goblin kids watch in terror from their hiding place as Adventurers swagger into their cave, kill or torture everyone and steal everything) and the panels show that this is essentially what the Goblins did to him . . . and it's followed up by a Super-Deform of the somewhat angry Quest Giver lady asking GS if that doesn't make them like evil demons.
That has been my biggest problem as well. GS doesn't really have a consistent tone and subverts/parodies tropes in one scene, then indulges in them in the next. I could ignore the tonal issues if they were used for anything, but they're only used to good effect in the first two chapters and things get awkward afterwards.

My take on GS is that it's the ultimate nerd power fantasy. I don't mean that negatively, fantasy has always been about that. We have a main character that obsesses over an activity his peers sneer at, but the more we learn about the world, the more we realize that his work is actually extremely important, and he became the absolute best at it. All the other kids at school adventurers then start admiring GS, who was previously considered an awkward weirdo who smells bad, some cute girls wants to lure him out of his shell and he gets hand-picked for the most important mission in the world. Nothing deep about it, just some 50 year old guy who grew up with Steve Jackson game books having fun and it's not surprising it resonates so well with people who spend a lot of time on the internet.

It also helps that the Manga is drawn quite nicely, too. Sort of generic, but still well executed and the designs are pretty good.

Also, by never showing the MC's face, it helps being a self-insert for the reader, which adds to the appeal, I guess.

As both a Berserk and Goblin Slayer manga fan since the first chapters were released on the internet a couple of years ago and before the anime was announced, i wish people would stop comparing it to the former so much, because beside the edgy stuff it goes nowhere near characters like Guts and Griffith and nowhere near the worldbuilding or narration of Miura (talking about the early parts especially).

The goblins are just evil creatures by nature with no deep motivation other than their survival and people are there for the action and to see Goblin Slayer annihilate them. It's not complicate and there's no hidden meaning.

The funny thing is that the rape in Goblin slayer is very mild at best and happens almost off camera, now if you want to be a old fag like me no one remembers when actual child rape happen in a anime (Elfen lied) or a guy got into bersek mode for plot reasons and raped someone in a frenzy (Valvrave) or that Rape that is very much described word by word in Kara no kyoukai and you could watch it in glorious 720p (because the blu rays sucked ass)

But of course the casuals tumblrites have short memory, and more funny they complain about the rape but dont complain about Goblin slayer actually murdering childrens, granted they were goblins but childrens nowadays

I was only going to quote just the first part, but then it just kept on going.

Noob confirmed

Berserk started in 1989 and Miura said he considers it only around 60% complete so there's a very good chance he'll die or give up before he finishes it.

He already gave up, blame the mobage of Idolmaster for that

I too remember Mayu's tragic backstory. While on the topic of rape nostalgia I also remember that one flashback episode of Tenjou Tenge, that I watched in glorious 480p back in '04. Seeing the Fighter in Goblin Slayer getting Gobbed.com wasn't anything new.

Lets not forget the off camera lesbian rape in Kannazuki no miko , Anime tumblr is full of SAO fags with a crunchyroll subscription

Violence Jack... where you see one of the more important characters after she got beaten to death by some Wasteland punks and a broken baseball bat is sticking out of her vagina. Yeah, Goblin Slayer is small fry compared to the stuff that was produced in the past.

The Maze OVA had the male alter of the main character engaged in some consentually-questionable sex, and it was treated as a joke.
