Aw fuck, and I have plans to watch it.
Well, it's not terrible, it's just sort of tame compared to what I had hoped for.
One of the core aspects of Blade of the Immortal is how Manji gets fucked up during combat at the Manga never shies away from showing blood and violence, but the anime sort of cuts away instead, which kind of dulls the action.
Maybe that was just the broadcast version, though, and the DVD/BluRay version is more ballsy.

The animation is very good and the voice actors are top notch. It's just a damn shame that it was made by Bee Train and not Production I.G.
The opening is pretty kickass, though.

The manga ended up getting cancelled/ending early anyway, right? The anime adaptation may have further hurt it. In the meantime it might've also helped kill Manglobe, even though it still took a few years for it to close down. Like damn, Manglobe must've fucked up really badly or something.
I just don't get what they were aiming for...

They skipped almost the entire part where Ganta is stuck in the upper levels of Deadman Wonderland so he'd be in the secret underground facility more early in the searies, but if I'm not mistaken, at the end of the season, they tried to do sort of a roll back so Ganta would be back in the above-ground Deadman Wonderland and it's just so weird to me what they were trying to go for.
If they skip some parts, that's a shame, but I can live with that... but trying to put these parts in later just creates a huge clusterfuck and felt awkward. If they had made a second season, they would have to rewrite the entire plot to make it fit the previous season, it would still make little sense why Ganta is back above ground and it would just steal time and money they could be using to actually further the plot.

What were they thinking?

Watched the first episode of Fist of the Blue Sky Regenesis. I can see the 3D growing on me because it's really not that bad, there's genuine effort put into making the characters emote as small as subtle movement of the eyes. It's certainly no Berserk. I don't know if they're saving the good stuff for later but they missed two really good chances for gore and that kind of sucked. Overall, decent. I'll definitely watch the rest of it.

I've just got finished watching Dragon Ball Super. As a long time Dragon Ball fan I have to say the ending was rather predictable, but very satisfying. As much criticisms I have to lend towards Super: I have to say it ended off on a good note.

I really liked that it wasn’t as simple as “Goku vs (blank), Goku wins in the end” that we typically get. They added just enough this time that it was satisfying for me

I saw Mary and the Witch's Flower and I liked it overall but it seemed like they wasted valuable screen time setting up that "OC do not steal" version of Hogwarts (which itself was kind of an "OC do not steal" version of the school from The Worst Witch) just to have Mary decide that she didn't want to be a student there.

I know for the story to make sense, Mary would still have had to visit a magical science place of some sort but it seems like it could have just as easily been a magical research laboratory outside of the overdone "magical boarding school in England" setting.

The book it was based on came before either of them, so I would say you're looking at the ur-example of it.

@Steamboat_Bill Ah, you're right. I did not know about The Little Broomstick.

From what I now understand, Mary did become a student at Endor College in the book, which could explain why it felt a little jarring to me that she just suddenly blew off the possibility of attending the school in the movie. I guess Studio Ponoc skipped over a lot of content from the book because they wanted to keep the movie under 2 hours?

Rest in peace Takahata. I was just thinking about Grave of the Fireflies minutes before I saw he had passed away. That's a passing that's gonna affect everyone in the industry. I hope there's a dedication to him in Miyazaki's next film.

In other Japanese cartoon talk, I watched the first episode of FLCL Alternative. It manages to strike a careful balance of feeling like FLCL without feeling derivative of the original OVA. I hope the rest of Alternative and later on Progressive can keep this up.

Wait, ITS OUT?!

EDIT: Damn, didn’t realize the first ep was aired on April Fools. I just thought it was that Rick and Morty Bushland Adventures all night.

That's because Aussie R&M was on Sunday Night into Monday. Toonami did their own thing, which included the FLCL premiere and every other show that night (not counting the Dragon Ball series, Black Clover and Gundam) airing in Japanese with subs.

Has anyone watched or heard of Mahou Shoujo Site/Magical Girl Site? The first episode just premiered today. I started reading the manga years ago and I enjoy it (although unfortunately it stopped being scanlated over a year ago; fortunately, it's currently being legally released in English). It's basically a super dark magical girl show, kind of like Madoka Magica.

Anyway, I just finished watching the first episode and I enjoyed it. The series in general is brutal and edgy (in a good way), so if you like that sort of thing I definitely would recommend it to you. You don't have to be a fan of the magical girl genre to enjoy it.
