Its still really funny to go back to the original English dub of Sailor Moon and hear how many times the phrase “THEY’RE CLOSE BECAUSE THEY’RE COUSINS!” comes up.
Lmao.

Also, what's so hilarious about the whole "COUSINS" thing is that the nature of Haruka and Michiru's relationship is almost entirely shown through non-verbal communication and body language. They hold hands, stare longingly at each other, and tend to stand closer together than would be expected for people who are "just friends."

So basically, Cloverway made them into "cousins" who clearly have a romantic interest in each other. Because gay incest is so much better than just being gay.

It was pretty painfully obvious that they were into each other.

In their defense, it was the 90s and you couldn't do that in kids' TV in the U.S. They may not have done it well, but it had to be done if it was going to air in America.

But the thing is that Haruka and Michiru are never explicitly stated to be lovers. It's obvious that they are (given the body language I mentioned earlier, along with their flirting), but it's not like they introduce each other with "Hi, I'm Haruka and this is my girlfriend Michiru. We're lesbians."

I understand cutting out the flirting, but they could have just said that Haruka and Michiru were "best friends" or something. Making them cousins made added an uncomfortable (yet hilarious) undertone of incest to the dub.

I can't remember exactly what I said, but I was watching I think the third episode of Sailor Moon S and my mom sat down to watch for a little bit. She had asked if Haruka (well, Amara) was actually a girl dressing up as a boy, and I mentioned along the lines of "in this dub, they're written as cousins". Kinda sounded rather dumb, but I wasn't really sure what to say about it, and she didn't say anything else.

It's pretty funny because she's never really liked Sailor Moon due to the character designs, claiming Serena looked like she was drawn as an eight-year-old who was in love with someone like 10+ years her senior, and she prefers (or at least tolerates) Cardcaptors over it. With that one, I once explained to her the changes the dub made to the original, and she was squicked out the most by Sakura's mother marrying her teacher while still in high school. I was a little surprised she still sat down to watch some of the Cardcaptors movie when I was rewatching it not long after that.

I kinda... didn't know that, and I do agree they could have done better.

that's one of the reasons i never liked the romances in both shows. ti was so weird for some reason. if not, full on pedophilla.

and another trivial reason, the outfits look similar as their senshi forms but with a few tweaks here and there. and why can't they at least look different when transformed? this is a sort of common trope in magical anime that i like to arvert in my stories.

Wasn't it mentioned once that their identity is completely disguised when they transform, even when they look the same to us? At least that's how it is with Tokyo Mew Mew, could've sworn that's a main staple for magical girl series as a whole.

It was, yeah. The tiara or something does it.

IIRC, Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon's creator) specifically styled the Sailor Senshi's magical girl outfits after Japanese sailor fuku because she wanted middle and high school girls to have a superhero that looked like them to look up to.

I believe Oda already said that there will be no romance subplots in One Piece, but I could be wrong.

In the meantime, Chapter 890 is out, and it was AMAZING!

The Jinbe/Chopper/Nami/ vs an enraged Big Mom is shaping up to be the best cooperative battle since Oars. Very suspenseful and clever, plus, you get the feeling that they are all fighting for survival until they reach Cacao Island, every action is last-ditch, and the Sunny took quite some punishment this chapter, so I wouldn't rule out a new ship to replace it.

Also, Jinbe using Haki against Big Mom had me squealing in delight, in fact, the whole chapter had me squealing.

It's official now for me, Whole Cake Island arc is the best non-Marineford arc! It just keeps topping itself chapter after chapter, especially its 2nd half (From the assassination attempt and on).
I think one of Oda's few shortcomings as a writer is that he doesn't really seem to know how to portray a couple. Like, the only official couple I can think in OP is Silver & Shakky and they're barely onscreen together for a couple of chapters. Everything he says about Luffy being too pure hearted or how the boys who read his manga don't care about romance sounds like bullshit.

Not that's anything wrong with that, if Oda isn't interested or confident in his own skills he shouldn't force that shit in the manga. Fuck shippers.

And yes WCI has been great
Jinbe's a fucking boss. He can block Big Mom's attack his armament haki and the blow her away with fishman karate.

I really like how the non-combat specialist are getting their time to shine, and how they're working as a team. Nami making Zeus her bitch was pricesless (she was long overdue for a power up).

I think it stems more from his lack of interest. And I agree with you that One Piece shouldn't have forced romances.

There is also the factor of the Strawhats being comprised of completely different species and age groups. To me this is what supports my contention that One Piece isn't designed to be a romance series at all, nor was it even considered by Oda.

Conan's Gosho Aoyama is the complete opposite, I think nearly every adult character is either in a couple, wants to be or implied to be in a ship. Even side side characters like Higo. And it bogs down things considerably for me, because most of those pairings are written as complete cliches and exist only to keep everyone tied up.

This is what I love about the WCI arc, it took characters that are decidedly 2nd stringers in terms of fighting ability and made them look effective again. Sure, they we're helped by Jinbe, who is an absolute badass. And Carrot, who is delightful and effective in her own way. But characters like Nami, Brook and Chopper needed to feel effective again.

Now all that remains is Sanji's big moment to complete the quartet.

I just wish that Pedro survived :heart-empty:

Let’s be honest: no matter how they phrased their relationship, it would’ve looked and sounded awkward. I think Cloverway went with “cousins” because it was at least family-related and in that sense it would kinda explain their intimacy. Still awkward as hell ofc given the incest subtext but they really didn’t have much to work with.

Is it weird that I don't really have any strong opinions on Dragon Ball GT even up to completion? Like it's more of a letdown/disappointment than it is the worst thing ever--I'd daresay the worst thing about GT was Pan herself. It could just be her dub voice actress wasn't all that great to begin with, but she was just waaaay too much of a sweetheart to have really made her mark in the world of Dragon Ball, like girl, you traveled the galaxy, you could've done so much after getting home and proved your worth.

That ending didn't really make sense, though, like it was both rushed and overstayed its welcome at the same time (Omega Shenron really shouldn't have lived for as long as he did). It was like the writers really didn't know how to end the series and had to make something up at the last minute, almost like it was nothing more than a cash-in. Gasp. Would definitely explain (or not?) why so many characters undeservedly got the shaft.

I don't regret buying a used copy (it was really the only other way I was going to watch the series), but it wasn't worth it, either. It's just a weird feeling in general.

and guess who voices Mami in English?
Carrie Keranen

GT is definitely the oddball of the franchise.

They should of said fuck it and made the series focus around Goten and Babby Trunks having adventures while Gohan and Vegeta train them. Bringing back Babby Goku just reeks of laziness.

I just found this short series by the studio behind Yami Shibai called Doamayger-D, an affectionate parody of 70s (mecha) anime complete with sidebar annotations (which can get distracting, but the show's well aware of it). It's pretty enjoyable, definitely needs more exposure.

I have no idea why the CBBC bought the Flint the Time Detective show and played it at six am weekday mornings.
