Just reread Toriyama's Sandland for the first time in over a decade. It was a fun little romp and you can't help but feel he was having fun creating it.
Sandland is a really fun read. Beelzebub had a decently memorable design for being from something so short.

The Going Merry situation is one of the reasons that I love the Enies Lobby saga, because it's very good at showing the hidden depth of Usopp, Luffy, and Zoro. Although I think Zoro's decision was very valid, because after all, no pirate can freely return to his old crew after disrespecting the boss, it really doesn't matter whether or not it was justified.

Meanwhile we have Nami outright stealing the boat and treasure (she was kinda justified in that action considering Arlong's whole "betray me and I'll kill your whole village" deal going on) and being forgiven once Luffy found out what was happening. I'm going to post the pages of the argument between Ussop and Luffy because I'm not kidding when I say Luffy is a callous sperglord who doesnt know how to deal with people. Its funny how Nami and Zoro who usually tries to implement some kind of common sense on the crew doesn't really interfere in the argument.

If any of you care about Umaru-chan, the first manga series has been licensed in the states by Seven Seas Entertainment. The second manga series will probably follow suit when all 11 volumes have been released in the States.

Also, any of you guys read The Saga of Tanya the Evil?

The entire premise behind Tanya the Evil is balls to the wall insane.

An atheist Japanese salaryman, in the moment of being murdered, is confronted by a self-righteous entity he refers to as "Being X" who condemns the man for not believing that "Being X" is God and sentences him to be reborn in a world that is similar to World War I Europe mixed with early aspects of World War II and magic, in an empire torn apart by countless wars with all nearby countries. The salaryman is reborn as a girl, Tanya Degurechaff. According to "Being X", if she's not able to die a natural death, or she refuses to have faith in Him, her soul will leave the circle and be sent to hell for the countless sins that Tanya has committed in her previous life. In search for an escape, Tanya decides to enter into the Empire's Mages Division and fight in the world war, hoping to reach a high enough rank as fast as possible to remain far from the battlefield and in this way avoid the risk of being killed. Even if she's now forced to speak with a young girl's lisp, Tanya soon turns into a ruthless soldier who prioritizes efficiency and her own career over anything else, even the lives of those beneath her, especially those that get on her bad side.

Today I got Shiver, the newest English publication of Junji Ito's work:

This collection is pretty cool because all nine stories were hand-picked by Junji Ito himself. At the end of each story, there are author's notes and some early sketches. It's pretty cool to read Ito's thoughts on his stories.

The nine stories that are included are:
  1. Used Record: People become dangerously obsessed with an odd record that contains a haunting jazz tune without lyrics.
  2. Shiver: A jade ornament curses whoever possesses it by making them develop big holes all over their body until they die.
  3. Fashion Model: Some amateur filmmakers hire a ghoulish-looking professional model who turns out to not be human.
  4. Hanging Blimp: After the death of a popular actress, giant heads floating in the sky with ropes hanging from them start to appear all over Tokyo. That wouldn't be so bad, except the head balloons are determined to hang everyone.
  5. Marionette Mansion: A boy is unhappy because his family are traveling puppeteers living in a van and never staying anywhere more than a month or so. But one day, his father dies and now it's just him and his little sister. A couple of years later they reunite with their older brother but find out he's become obsessed with the marionettes they ran away from.
  6. Painter: A story from the Tomie series. Here, a young painter becomes obsessed with capturing Tomie's essence with his art, although that proves to be difficult considering that Tomie is a monster.
  7. The Long Dream: A dying girl in the hospital is terrified of dying. At the same time, a male patient is experiencing longer and longer dreams. Though his dreams only last one night, his perception of time in said dreams grows from months to years to centuries. Eventually, his body changes with the dream time.
  8. Honored Ancestors: A girl loses her memory, but when she sees the monstrosity that put her in shock in the first place she remembers everything.
  9. Greased: Hands-down the most disgusting story Ito's ever created. It's about a family that's cursed by grease.

I definitely recommend buying this book, especially considering that officially translated Ito works are few and far between. If enough people buy this book, hopefully that will encourage Viz to publish more Ito manga.

Oh shit I just realized Fashion Model is where this famous Brianna Wu meme comes from.

I love the (very, very) dynamic art, and the quick pacing, but I agree with you that the characters are razor-thin, there's no substance there at all. This is partly why Pierrot chose to slow down the pace, to add more character moments.
they slowed it down the wrong way though. I wish they took the same approach they did with yu yu hakusho. But I doubt any of that talent is still there.

This looks to be a good collection, i am especially interested in that unreleased story. I never thought he'd do more with the fashion model. It probably not good, but owning physical copy of the other stories with creator commentary is worth it. I'll pick up sometime after Christmas. God I hope the anime at least gets more of his original manga published stateside. I actually like to buy things from stuff I like.

I might have an obsession with anime.

Hey, who wants to raid the local booze store and watch all this anime?

You monster, you have like nine-ish more titles than me.

Maybe.

Not all of the highlighted folders have all of the episodes for the most part btw.

There needs to be an Otaku/Weeaboo Anonymous or something if one doesn't exist.

Fuckin hell, it seems like Kadokawa can't go 5 minutes now without trying to fuck up Kemono Friends, cause it seems they are stirring up more drama again.

I guess Kadokawa just want to recapture the spirit of the original mobile game's success.
Seriously though, you have someone who manages to take your dying franchise and turn it into a golden goose cashcow and your first response is to get rid of the guy who made it good in the first place, why?

So I binged the entirety of Puella Magi Madoka Magica yesterday.

Maybe it was because I was sick and possibly hallucinating, but Jesus, what a weird ass show. In a good way though.
