Plot twist: IT WAS THE JEWS WHO WHERE BEHIND IT!

I shouldn't ever have to be wary about whether the MC is likable or not. That's a sign of a bad writer if you can't even make side-characters interesting to keep your audience's attention should the main character suck ass (which is also bad writing any way you slice it, but the deuteragonist or other characters have the possibility of saving it).
I think the side characters and plot ideas were good enough, issue is that the show was setup as king's court drama, but it ends up being lighthearted mystery.

It doesn't help that it's a conspiracy plot with little intelligence on the part of the conspirators and they mostly get away with it for as long as they do due to the fact that neither of the two characters in the show smart enough to figure it out actually give enough of a shit to perform a proper investigation.

This is why I'm convinced modern audiences don't give a shit about good writing as long as the art/animation and music is pretty. Just because there's somewhat of an artistic identity and/or the characters are striking enough to cosplay as, that doesn't make the story automatically good.

Even if it's supposed to be a court drama, it just all revolves around concubines trying to out-whore each other by poisoning each other and that's supposed to be a good thing. Bruh.

Court drama was always about concubines doing this shit, it's part of the genre identity. But Apothecary Diaries just cucks out of any real character drama, instead it's always some maid in waiting doing the bad thing.

This isn't even a modern audiences thing, it's a female audiences thing. They will give a lot of lip service to Mystery/True Crime as a genre but they actually just care about the stuff happening around the mystery and not the crunchy bits.

Why do whores not have any personality outside of being a whore?

Except I'm not finding anything about Apothecary Diaries actually being intended for a female audience, unless the creator was savvy about the periphery demographic. Just because the main lead is female doesn't automatically mean it's for women only.

It's a will-they-won't-they romance about a Mary Sue female lead that solves mysteries. Until Maomao pilots a giant robot, gets into wizard battles, or starts showing her panties all the time it's pretty clear that it's in no way directed at any male Domestic audience outside of maybe history dudes (and even then it's a pretty apocryphal depiction of China so probably not even them)

I wish the women in the show acted like whores, it's too whitewashed and everyone is overly nice. Actual period piece have soap opera levels of schemes.

What are you talking about. It's literally about a girl that is smart and secretly beautiful that everyone loves, and regularly speaks her mind, while having multiple important beautiful people wanting to marry her. You can't go more femcel than this. It's basically Chinese Twilight.

So I've been forcing myself to watch all of One Piece because I hate myself I guess, and it has raised a question:

Is Oda cringe for including so many trannies in this franchise, or is he based for consistently portraying them as deformed, hideous, perverted freaks who are obviously male?

depends on how you view it as its rooted in japan's own crossdressing subculture or whatever the fuck
ugh

I think he's friends with an actual crossdresser, but he finds the idea of okama funny and wanted to portray them as such. Besides, they differ from real trannies by being superhuman enough to kick your ass into next Tuesday, and they actually just want to be left alone to frolic on the beach to their hearts' content. They don't want to groom kids into their lifestyle nor invade women's spaces to rape them, people are free to choose to live with them if they wanted (Sanji didn't have a choice and he booked it once he was able to).

Also Ivankov is fabulous and I'd fight the good fight alongside him, hee haw!

I saw Rumiko Takahashi recommended a series called Kaijin Fugeki. The plot is kind of interesting, but basically it involves people battling entities called "Nights". Sometimes they're natural disasters, other times they're mythical Japanese folklore figures or based off some other mythology. I'm only 10 or so chapters in but I think it's good enough to keep following. The art is also seriously impressive especially when you consider they're delivering this kind of quality weekly.

For some reason while reading it I had a suspicion that I had seen something else of theirs forever ago and that's when I realized: this is the Air Gear guy. Unlike that series though it looks like he isn't even pretending to be subtle with his off-the-wall ideas and instead has created a story where crazy things can and will happen constantly.

It's the last thing I would expect Rumiko to recommend but I'll probably continue following it. It is a shonen but if you don't mind that kind of battle story or fanservice (so far it isn't as bad as his other works) it's probably worth checking out. It will probably be more talked about when an anime is made

I love Apothecary Diaries but you're not wrong. She's not only all of these things but also secretly a super important and connected to all the things. While at times crossing social lines that most times would see her beheaded then tossed into a gutter. It's basically a wish fulfillment for nerdy women.

What i find funny about the story too, is the author apparently didn't want to include romance in the story at all, Her I think aunt or grandma pressured her into it saying it would make readers like the story more, which it apparently did.

This now annoys the author to no end because she can't focus on a lot of the parts of the story she wants without including the romance bits now.

It's why apparently, she's not a big fan of the purple haired guy.

Its very funny that she hates Jinshi because he's a major facet of everything and essentially the main romantic focus. Too bad because romance in anime is big with women and men both.

At least in the start it was okay and she just tries to keep her head down, but whenever she has a House Eureka moment she does retarded shit that would get her punished. It does help she has multiple influential people vouching for her (mainly the two most important in the concubine court, and a major minister).

Jinshi is pretty great, especially compared to the usual archetypes of the otome genre, without him the series wouldn't have gained as much traction.
