It really is. Konosuba making fun of that is again what makes it great.

Most Isekai or other power fantasy shit tend to blow their load early and never recover. They feel like fanfiction when it comes to their writing.
To me, the fact that this is so popular is proof that some cultures in the world need to take childhood mental health treatment more seriously.

The thing that bothers me about most isekai being released today is that it is unhealthy fantasy fodder for unpopular kids and shut ins.
Oh for sure, but the loser protagonist seems to be a problem endemic to most animation these days whether it be eastern or western. The "normal everyday kid" archetype has definitely fallen to the wayside in favor of the NEET social outcast. Although I did recently see a show that played with that idea in a fun way where the main chick gets reincarnated as the villainess but the twist is that the world and character she is reincarnated into are both products of her long ago Chuuni phase that she grew out of and is also embarrassed by.

My understanding (and this is probably wrong) of LNs is that a lot of them start on what is effectively the Japanese equivalent of Wattpad and then make their way into self published volumes. This makes sense to me since they share a lot of the same meandering and unfocused scattershot qualities to their writing that a lot of stories on Wattpad and similar sites have.

Konosuba is something truly special. It perfectly treads that line between being a sincere love letter to the genre that it's tearing apart while also being a damning indictment of all its conventions. All in all it's a masterclass in how to write good satire.

@RSU 1741 Hey man, in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king, right? Given the absolute dearth of anything else even remotely good in Re:Zero is it any wonder that the one character with even a whiff of character and visual appeal would become the one thing people take out of it? It's no wonder Rem got popular.

Japan (and asia in general) have problems with things like therapy because you're expected to get over your own problems and not bother others with those problems. It's why suicide and overworking are so common. It's also why things like becoming a NEET are so common, why would you talk to your family about a problem? They expect you to handle it on your own.

Article I found that kinda goes over it, I'd find better ones but I'm at work currently.

You’re not wrong about any of that. I would even say most of the Western world is not taking things like therapy and mental health care seriously as well. But we should end this side conversation here or start another thread to continue it.

I stopped watching Rezero most of the way through season 1 because it felt like watching a bad Let's Play. Just fucking kill yourself if something goes wrong, Subaru. You already figured that out 12 episodes in! Why the fuck are you letting it keep going when you don't control how the autosave works and all you'll gain from going further is suffering some form of excruciating death and probably watching others suffer terrible fates on the way there!?

Obviously the only therapist I need is Goku telling me to believe in the heart of the One Piece

Believe it

Maybe there are some other shows in that genre that are good. But I am unwilling to trudge through a billion isekai's just to find something good.
If you broaden your horizon beyond the current crop of reincarnation garbage you can find gems slightly more easily but you are correct that Sturgeon's Law is in full effect for anime.

Isn't that kind of what Hajime No Ippo did, too?
Ippo is a certified classic, no questions asked.
At the boxing gym there’s a large portion of dudes there who took up boxing and fighting because they watched Ippo as a kid and it sent them down that path, same with me tbh.
My gloves are always red, my bro has Ippo fighting shorts, other dudes have Ippo shirts, it’s a cultural touchstone for young boxers in a big way.

It's no wonder Rem got popular.

I kinda sorta believe she's popular because Emilia, despite being a brainless doormat, isn't enough of a doormat for the average animu fan. Rem in the first season a complete madwoman and the writing around her is as schizophrenic as everything in Re-Zero is (her assassination attempts an' shit is just contrived bullshit, c'mon). Then she becomes a complete doormat willing to die for the protagonist and getting aroused by being as submissive as possible. Usual jap nonsense, I'd guess.

Paranoia Agent

I'd say the overall "plot" of Paranoia Agent is the least interesting thing about it (and themes Kon recycled in Paprika), and Kon wasn't particularly opaque about his inspirations and objectives. One of the positives is that the psychological issues in PA catch subjects that aren't typically focused in animu (there's of course the schoolkid, but problems about middle-age expectations, parenting and personal failure are touched upon with a good amount of grace). I'm still on the fence how much of the whore/assistant episode is fanservice or a proper attempt, though.

This thread is reminding me I should simply stop trying to watch anything new and at last catch on both Escaflowne and Now and Then, Here and There. I mean, there's anything decent this season above those two?

I agree with you here, Rem is the definition of the "I can fix her" waifu that so many maladjusted otaku love.

As far as good shows from this season go? Not really. I've really been enjoying MAO but it's basically just Inuyasha but more refined and mature so I can't recommend it if you aren't into that.

I've heard that Konosuba is good, but that's about it. But that faggy anime YouTuber Gigguk have been pushing isekai for years now, so it's just guilty by association.

Konosuba.

Digimon unironically.
Maybe

You are technically correct, but I still have Digimon marked as shōnen in my brain. But yes Digimon is cool even though I haven't watched it in decades.

Gigguk is a fag but don't let him alone sour you on the entire genre even though 99% of it is shit. And yeah, Konosuba is fantastic.
