Anyone who read Kyoukai no Rinne by Rumiko Takahashi, I am up to volume 9 and I want to know how long until the main plot kicks off

On a whim I read through the manga Kakugo no Susume, also known as Apocalypse Zero for the English dubbed OVA adaptation. I've seen people talk about the OVA before and it's kind of infamous for being batshit insane. Partly because it takes place in a ruined Toyko after some vaguely explained apocalyptic event where teenagers still go to still like normal despite the lack of parents or law and order (the kids all commute to school and back with weapons for self-defense), and mainly because of all the early villains being people turned into monsters with forms representing their screwed up personalities, which mainly means weird, gross-out sex stuff.

However, the manga was fairly popular and highly regarded in Japan, so that made me curious about. Having now read it, I can say it's really good. Despite all the ultra-violence, weird sex shit and off-beat humor (which, the manga can be pretty funny), it's not trying to be shock value, it's a very sincere story about having the resolve perservere against all odds in a broken world. It just likes to take every plot point and bit of setting to its absolute extreme. There's no chill in this manga. Every other line out of the hero's mouth is the most heroic and badass one-liner, every bit of narration goes the hardest it can to hype up what's about to happen. Multiple characters continue fighting even as their bodies are medically dead from multiple fatal injuries, a guy pukes up 90% of his organs and walks it off, a couple characters commit seppuku using just their thumb. The fight scenes are good at being readable, and they tend to be technically short in what happens but each indivitual blow is made to look like a big deal. Even the main character simply raising his leg to change fighting stance is made to look like the most intense thing ever.

Would recommend. And apparently it finally got a full fan translation 3 years ago, so there you go. Also, the theme song made for the OVA (with lyrics written by the manga author supposedly) is kickass.

I did read the manga years ago and now that I read your text, I finally got it.

Kakugo is basically what if Saint Seiya was good and not devoid of soul in writing characterization and so on. I bet Megumu Okada wanted Saint Seiya Episode G to be like it but failed like anything in that manga and the sequels.

Never watched the anime of Kakugo, but the older brother being fucking insane is something that I never forgot.

Speaking of, I think it's funny that Kakugo kind of looks like a chudjak when he's wearing glasses, while his evil brother Harara is effectively a tranny.

It is a really great manga, I want more of this author to be fully translated for myself to read his other works.

I already did read one of them years ago and I liked it too

An update about Sanda: it's getting WILD. Episode 5 has a teenager explicity being touched on her nether parts by another teenager and asking for more. I'm not gonna spoil too much, but there's naked buff Santa, creepy old man obsessed with children, cool guy assassin, government-assigned wife...

I like where the story is going, it's a pretty good and extreme analogy to japanese society but it also mirrors ours to an extent with the youth obsession, the refusal to grow up and the killing of imagination and faith. I'm intrigued.

Also, Kazao a cute.

Yor getting shot in the ass......heh. Poor Loid.
I started the shin chan bluray. It's funny. I hate to admit it but Laura Bailey is great as Shin. It is an interesting idea to cut and paste and splice episodes on purpose. Its this whole meta thing. It works, especially because of the fact that there are like a billion episodes iirc. I died at Penny Milfer and her backstory being her dad beats her up. Deranged. Then all of a sudden Shin and Action Bastard are being chased by this evil demon fire woman (for the life of me I can't find out her name)

I'm surprised the show doesn't get more attention for its intentionally wild dub, while Ghost Stories seems to get all the attention instead.

You just reminded me of something. Chris Patton went on this kind of rant about GS (ironically he was Enema Man in Crayon Shin Chan) on Halloween. He says he is tired of talking about the show but maybe.....be grateful?

He failed to mention that the Japanese licensor i believe, specifically told them they could do what they wished as long as they stuck to the plot of the episode and didn't deviate.

Anyway ahhh the picture of Loid. He's so handsome. I love him as a protagonist.

Same. And I hold Beastars in high regard for cleverly expressing certain things that are hard to put into words, so I had high hopes. But I just read the manga and I'm sorry to say it's all downhill from here.
Like fucking vertically. Very interesting setup, but it throws it all away and just turns silly (not in a fun way).

I agree, the best case is finishing the current plot without Anya going to be Imperial scholar
I think it has to come down to her hitting 8 tonitruses (tonitri?) and 8 stellas at the exact same time.

It's almost certain to end that way, but it will be a slog actually reaching that point in the current pace.
shouldn't this fag be focused on finishing SAO abridged first?
The whole abridging community is a gay zombie. Also doesn't SAO have like 5 different series?

Apocalypse Zero
Read it on the recommendation, good shit. Weird how manga went from this crazy fun content, to being very reserved, and now just nihilistic.

I keep telling people, a timeskip would do wonders for the series. Ironically, it's like half Doraemon in that I want it to continue for a long time, but the show dies in normality and routine, so it can't be Doraemon if it wants to retain its large audience and intrigue. I hope the series can avoid that trap considering Endo's other works.

GS has all the Melvin Kavinsky mutt memes so it checks out that the mutts like it more. Also, I see your ecchi pfp :)

You can't do a timeskip before resolving Loid/Yor's relationship and at that point you'd have to invent new drama that changes/challenges their relationship or just make an Anya cute girl doing cute things/high school drama spin-off with her parents as background characters which might be fine but it's a spin-off and not at timeskip at that point

It wouldn't be hard to make new drama. Anya being a teenager would help with some of it but even then, You could have Yor and Loids relationship advance but not actually have either find out about their jobs as Twilight or Thorn Princess.
